00:00 Why not try something different at Christmas this year?
00:02 Some unusual Christmas drinks, curry and mac and cheese,
00:06 to finish, why not have an almost fat-free
00:08 Greek Christmas pudding?
00:09 And to end the special day,
00:11 you can play some retro board games.
00:13 This is the guide to the perfect alternative Christmas day.
00:18 - Well, we are in Sao Oco,
00:27 it's a new concept being named in Blackpool.
00:29 What we bring in, the idea is bringing from,
00:32 obviously we're from Canary Island,
00:33 I'm from Tenerife, he's from Gran Canaria.
00:36 And the idea of all this is bringing a new concept,
00:40 fresh from our island.
00:42 Obviously we train in hospitality all these years
00:45 and we want to bring something new to Blackpool.
00:48 So for that, we just bring in these glasses
00:52 we have here and this is all homemade, one by one.
00:57 It took us three months to bring them here.
01:00 And they are special because we try to make an experience
01:04 for the people.
01:05 Macri's ice cream.
01:13 This is really nice for this season as well.
01:17 It's gonna be like a show factor
01:19 because it's with a bit of a smoke.
01:21 Let's start with it.
01:23 So we got Tia Maria to start.
01:26 It's coffee liqueur.
01:28 Really nice, really intense as well.
01:30 Let's, 50 of that.
01:33 We're gonna put, this is a rum for Zacapa,
01:39 Republican Dominican, 23 years olera, it's really nice.
01:43 Vanilla notes as well.
01:46 We're gonna put 30 of these.
01:47 We go for the Baileys as well.
01:53 So to give that thickness.
01:56 We're gonna put 50 of that.
01:58 And there we go, just shake.
02:24 And with this smoke we're gonna make,
02:27 we're gonna make-
02:27 - The same flavor that it got to the ice cream,
02:30 vanilla, we have it in smoke.
02:32 That's to give a little bit of extra taste.
02:35 And then we serve it to the customer.
02:48 And then just, we need to take the lid out
02:52 and slowly, until all the smoke is gone.
02:56 Slowly.
02:57 And it's ready to enjoy.
03:06 We can't guarantee the sound,
03:09 but we can guarantee the good vibe.
03:12 That's for sure.
03:13 - With Christmas Day looming,
03:17 preparations for Christmas dinner are being made.
03:20 With many already stocking up on food,
03:22 snacks and drinks for the big day.
03:25 Whether you intend to have traditional turkey
03:27 or an alternative meat-focused centerpiece
03:30 or vegetarian and vegan options,
03:32 it's likely most people will be making a roast dinner
03:35 as part of the celebrations.
03:37 People do often overindulge during the festive season,
03:42 but with the cost of living crisis
03:44 impacting many households this year,
03:46 some may be looking for innovative ways
03:48 to use leftover Christmas food.
03:51 Meat pies, bubble and squeak, curry and mac and cheese
03:54 are some of the ways festive food can be reused.
03:57 And of course, you can always reheat leftovers
03:59 and treat yourself to another dinner
04:01 in the days following Christmas.
04:03 We asked people in Manchester what they do
04:06 with their Christmas dinner leftovers.
04:09 - We make bubble and squeak.
04:11 I don't know if that's just a Yorkshire thing or...
04:14 - Everybody said that this morning.
04:17 - Wacky chawl in a frying pan.
04:19 - Turkey, leftover turkey.
04:21 You can make lovely pies.
04:23 - Yeah.
04:24 - Pies.
04:25 - Turkey and leek pies, yeah.
04:26 - Oh, gorgeous leftover,
04:28 'cause there's loads of turkey left.
04:29 - Yeah.
04:30 - Make a pie.
04:31 - Bubble and squeak.
04:33 - Bubble and squeak's your favorite.
04:34 - Definitely.
04:36 Loads of sprouts in it.
04:37 - Bubble and squeak.
04:41 Definitely bubble and squeak, yeah.
04:44 I try not to have too many leftovers,
04:46 but yeah, sort of try and...
04:48 Or like, you know, meat's kind of like
04:50 curry or pies or something like that,
04:52 but yeah, try and make the most of it, yeah.
04:54 - Usually vegetables get all mashed together
04:56 and then we make a,
04:58 what do you call it now, bubble and squeak.
05:01 And we do like cold cuts.
05:05 I'm not a big fan of turkey curry,
05:08 but it's mainly cold cuts and things like bubble and squeak,
05:12 things like that.
05:14 - Well, I'm the kind of person
05:15 who makes sure there aren't any.
05:16 Do you understand what I mean?
05:18 'Cause it's just me and my husband and my son.
05:20 And the days of massive dinners are done for me.
05:25 So I buy what I need
05:28 and I kind of make sure there are no leftovers.
05:32 Although there are times I do miss having a dog
05:34 because of course the dog was like the hoover.
05:37 But yeah, no, I don't really do leftovers.
05:41 I make sure I haven't got any.
05:44 (upbeat music)
05:46 (upbeat music)
05:49 (upbeat music)
05:51 (upbeat music)
05:54 (upbeat music)
05:57 (upbeat music)
05:59 (upbeat music)
06:02 (upbeat music)
06:04 (upbeat music)
06:07 (upbeat music)
06:10 (upbeat music)
06:12 (upbeat music)
06:13 - Hi, I'm Christos from El Greco Restaurant.
06:16 - And I am, my name is Vangelis.
06:17 I'm the chef of El Greco.
06:19 - So today we try to explain
06:25 how we can make home
06:28 the Greek pudding.
06:32 The Greek Christmas pudding.
06:33 - Melomakarona has inside orange juice,
06:39 orange zest,
06:41 flour,
06:43 baking powder.
06:45 We put in the baking powder inside the orange juice.
06:49 For that reason it's more fluffy.
06:50 Honey, cinnamon, cloves,
06:54 and that's it.
06:57 We make something like a bread.
07:01 We're doing it small balls.
07:05 We cook in 180, 15 minutes.
07:09 And after we take them out,
07:11 we have ready one syrup, cold one
07:14 with honey, sugar, cinnamon,
07:19 and pieces of orange inside.
07:21 We baptize the hot red sweet.
07:27 That one is take all the flavor from the syrup.
07:30 Then in the end, we're sprinkling with walnuts.
07:33 Traditionally in Greece,
07:36 the mother of the house fixed this one
07:39 because it's put him all the love
07:44 for that reason, it's special.
07:47 And it's more nice.
07:51 Yeah, it's really bad that the video,
07:54 he don't take the smell of all that ingredient
07:58 because all my memories from young one,
08:01 it's the house, those days,
08:05 it smell cinnamon, orange,
08:08 smell, it's amazing.
08:11 Nice touch.
08:12 And for that reason, all those days
08:15 is full of love, it's full of happiness
08:19 and make the people laughing.
08:22 - So for today, we try to explain our Greek pudding
08:32 for Christmas.
08:34 And so we say to everybody, welcome to the El Greco.
08:37 They have the nice atmosphere,
08:39 the Greek hospitality,
08:44 the original Greek food
08:47 and the Greek Christmas menu also.
08:51 So we say to yamas everybody.
08:53 - Yamas.
08:54 - In Greece.
08:56 - We're waiting to come to our restaurant.
08:58 - So for some alternative entertainment
09:00 for Christmas evening,
09:01 we've got a group of people trying out
09:03 some retro board games,
09:05 which are fairly easy to find.
09:06 You can find them either in the loft
09:08 or probably on eBay.
09:09 Can't speak for how many parts may be missing.
09:11 Callum had perhaps started on the snowballs
09:13 when we asked him to introduce
09:14 the first game of the night.
09:16 - Connect four.
09:16 Sick.
09:21 - But our competitors were soon able
09:24 to recall the rules of the game, more or less.
09:27 - It's been a while since I've played it,
09:28 so it's kind of trying to think,
09:30 does it have to be diagonal or not?
09:31 Which is odd.
09:32 I don't know why I always thought
09:33 it had to be a diagonal one.
09:37 - No, I'm not doing that.
09:39 No, that's not fair.
09:40 Got it?
09:42 - I think I got it.
09:43 - Oh, you could have won there.
09:44 - That was me, I'd done it first.
09:45 (laughing)
09:46 - This is a bit of a dread.
09:47 - You got it?
09:48 - Yep.
09:49 - You could probably have a few games
09:51 and then go to something else
09:52 and then maybe come back to it.
09:54 - I think it's like less complicated
09:56 because it doesn't have the instructions.
09:57 It's very straight, a very straight forward one
09:59 to ease your mind a little bit.
10:01 - You know exactly how to do it once you've set it up.
10:04 - Little did our trio know
10:05 that the next game of the evening
10:07 was not one they're likely to be recalling fondly
10:09 in years to come.
10:10 - You have to build it first.
10:12 - Yeah.
10:13 It's somehow all on there,
10:14 if I was meant to be putting it,
10:15 but you can follow it.
10:16 (laughing)
10:19 - Oh my God.
10:20 - How are you supposed to do this?
10:21 - I've seen two different types of stairs.
10:25 - So I'm assuming that this must go in here somehow.
10:29 - It has to be said,
10:30 you could see the festive spirit starting to sap away.
10:33 We had asked our players
10:35 for their genuine reactions to these games
10:37 and their reaction to this one
10:39 was a very authentic to hell with it.
10:42 - Yeah, I'm gonna impress with this one.
10:43 - Yeah, no I'm not.
10:44 - Yeah, sure.
10:45 - It's like a family game on Christmas.
10:46 You don't want to have to.
10:47 - It's meant to be something simple.
10:48 - Next game we're gonna play is Downfall.
10:51 - Our players are on surer ground here.
10:53 Downfall feels very much like next level Connect Four.
10:56 - Oh! - Yes!
10:57 - Next game we're gonna play
10:58 is the family version of the arcade game.
11:01 - Pac-Man!
11:02 - Yeah, I definitely wouldn't have a little child play it.
11:04 - No. - Definitely not.
11:06 - It's a very safety conscious column.
11:07 - Yeah, definitely.
11:08 We have to be at ease, don't we?
11:09 - Yeah, especially away from babies
11:11 'cause babies eat anything.
11:12 - Oh yes.
11:13 - Oh God, have I done that right?
11:16 - Yeah. - I'm broke.
11:17 (laughing)
11:18 - 12, 14, 15.
11:19 - The yellow ones don't count, Colin.
11:22 - 18, 22, 20.
11:23 I took the two, I saw 20.
11:28 - You're the winner!
11:30 - Yay!
11:31 - I like the countdown in Connect Four.
11:33 They didn't take loads of building
11:36 and they weren't dead complicated.
11:38 You just kinda knew what you were doing.
11:39 - We asked our players what game
11:41 had not come out of the box full in the loft
11:43 that they wish had been there.
11:45 - Monopoly's quite a good one.
11:46 - Yeah. - Yeah.
11:47 - Do you think?
11:48 No? - Yeah.
11:50 Definitely is, but I think there's probably
11:52 more than one family Christmas maybe been ruined
11:54 by trying that. - Been ruined by, yeah.
