00:00 I imagine and hope that the audience leaves with feelings that are unsettling enough that they spark conversation.
00:10 We are seeing ongoing cyber attacks across the country.
00:14 The truth is much scarier.
00:16 What is the truth?
00:18 [Music]
00:31 First of all, I would like to know what makes you feel more excited about Leave the World Behind when you were cast in the project?
00:38 One of the most, if not the most appealing thing, was to get to work with this cast of people and Sam Esmail, the director.
00:46 And then of course the story is wonderful and I really appreciated Ruth being like millennial Gen Z age character.
00:54 She is the only one in the story who's experiencing this world from that lens.
01:00 I guess Ruth is the character who had the most chance in the adaptation of the book to the film.
01:06 What was the process like to get to know and absorb details of her in both materials?
01:10 Sam was great. He was like, "I'm making this change and it's different from the book."
01:16 So he said, "We'll collaborate on this." And he really allowed me to bring a lot of myself to it.
01:20 Of course, the script was Bible. But yeah, I mean, it was really like a group effort, which was cool.
01:26 The director Sam Esmail received opinions from Barack Obama on how to make the script more authentic and reliable.
01:34 And this reminded me of a sentence in which one of the characters say that he lives in a country that has many enemies.
01:42 Do you think self-criticism or self-awareness will be a huge conversation in an end-of-the-world situation?
01:48 Yeah, I mean, I think when the world feels like it's crumbling around you and the only thing that you have,
01:56 you know, you don't have technology, whatever, you're forced to deal with whoever, the people that are right in front of you.
02:02 I feel like you could get into all kinds of conversations about the human condition.
02:06 That's what I love, aside from the cast, the most about this movie is that it really is not necessarily about the disaster going on around the outside,
02:13 but it's how these people, these everyday people would fare in these circumstances.
02:19 In a situation as extreme as the one portrayed in the film, what do you believe that is the quality of a true survivor?
02:28 I feel like the person who could make the most of whatever time they had left,
02:34 like maintain some kind of purpose, would be the person who would be doing it right, I guess.
02:40 Which moments in the film do you believe will be most impactful for the audience and what do you hope they understand through your character?
02:48 I mean, gosh, there are so many severely impactful moments in the film.
02:53 I imagine and hope that the audience leaves with feelings that are unsettling enough that they spark conversation.
03:03 I would hope, I think all great art, you leave and you're like, "Oh, it's making me think of this, it's making me think of that,
03:07 now I have this question about the world," or, you know, exactly like, "What would I do in that situation?"
03:12 or, "Would I be like this character or would I not be like that character?"
03:15 And for Ruth, she's representing a lot of people in a certain generation.
03:21 So, yeah, I mean, I identify the most with Ruth in the story,
03:26 so I imagine that may be true for a lot of other people in my age group.
03:30 Haven't you been picking up on what's going on out there?
03:34 We've all been deserted.
03:36 There is no going back to normal.
03:43 [Explosion]
