00:00 Here's today's Derbyshire Times video bulletin.
00:03 Derbyshire County Council has joined forces with other local authorities
00:07 to give the green light for the devolution deal which will create a new
00:11 East Midlands combined authority with its own Mayor.
00:15 Residents across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Derby and Nottingham
00:18 will now get the chance to vote for the first ever East Midlands Mayor in May
00:23 after the region's councils agreed for devolution for the region.
00:27 Existing councils across the East Midlands including those in Derbyshire
00:31 will not be scrapped or merged under the devolution deal
00:34 and they will still oversee many public services
00:37 but the new combined authority would deal with broader issues such as
00:40 transport, regeneration and employment. It is hoped that the new
00:45 authority will bring in around four billion pounds of extra funding for the
00:49 East Midlands which Derbyshire County Council and
00:52 others feel is necessary to address decades of underfunding
00:55 compared to other areas.
00:58 The residents of a Matlock care home have been getting into the Christmas
01:02 spirit by crafting a one-of-a-kind tree which
01:05 can be recycled in January to keep newborn babies warm.
01:09 The regular knitting circle at Valley Lodge care home on Baple Road
01:13 were joined by other residents, staff and family members over several weeks
01:17 to produce individual woollen squares which have been combined
01:21 into the centrepiece of their decorations complete with crackers,
01:24 snowflakes, bows and baubles. The knitted tree is an evolution of a
01:29 group's big project from last year creating blankets for people nearing the
01:32 end of life. This time they wanted to comfort people
01:36 at the start of their journey of life.
