00:00 You're... you're lying!
00:02 Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for this beloved cartoon's scariest and saddest moments.
00:13 Back up, kid. I don't think I can control myself right now.
00:17 Number 10, Titan Trappers, Edge of the World.
00:22 As if this poor baby's past wasn't dark enough, he had to be swindled by a bunch of bloodthirsty hunters, too.
00:28 [Grunting]
00:30 [Gasp]
00:31 You were never one of us. My brothers and sisters, a new hunt begins today!
00:39 King so desperately seeks to know where he comes from and who his biological family is.
00:44 So when he's led to a group of beings who look like older versions of him, he's ecstatic.
00:49 He just wants to play catch with his dad, damn it!
00:52 Can I ask a favor? It's a little silly, but, uh, can we play catch?
00:57 Unfortunately, the beings turn out to be regular old humans, and they're looking to kill the last living Titan, who would be none other than King.
01:06 You like our disguises? Gotta look like a Titan to trap one.
01:10 Between learning the truth about how Eda found him to this devastating betrayal, King has really been through it.
01:16 Understandably, the whole experience is also traumatizing enough to show up in King's nightmare and watching and dreaming.
01:23 You're wrong. Don't you recognize your siblings? But don't worry, we saved the best spot for you.
01:30 [Screaming]
01:34 Number 9. The Story of the Owlbeast.
01:37 Varius, does it get much darker than a lifelong curse?
01:41 Oh yeah, wait, it does. How about a lifelong curse put on you by your own sibling?
01:46 Then why were you so easy to curse?
01:52 [Howling]
01:56 The first time we meet the Owlbeast is pretty terrifying, but that's nothing compared to what would come.
02:02 [Screaming]
02:07 Eda would end up captured, almost petrified, and sacrificing herself to save Luz.
02:12 I don't know if I can bounce back this time. Watch over King. Remember to feed Hootie.
02:18 Please, no!
02:19 And Luz, thank you for being in my life.
02:22 Can we also talk about petrification for a second? What a horrific way to go.
02:26 Then there's the fact that Eda, in her own Owlbeast form, hurt her father pretty badly and has appeared to live in shame ever since.
02:34 Why, Eda? I forgave you.
02:38 Eda would grapple with this throughout the entire series, and although she eventually made peace with the beast, it's still a horribly tragic story.
02:47 Number 8. Odalia's Abuse - Varius
02:50 Mama to Mittens, remember our deal? Make this look good and we'll forgive your recent lackluster performance in school.
02:58 Ah, yes, the mother who uses her daughter's crush as a punching bag to demo a new product.
03:03 Odalia's behavior isn't just self-centered, it's oftentimes plain wicked.
03:08 Throughout the course of the series, she makes it clear that she would sacrifice anyone if it means gaining status or wealth.
03:15 What he does with our products is none of our business.
03:18 What is my business is keeping our family ahead of the rest.
03:23 In her debut, the very first thing we see her do is police who her daughter befriends.
03:28 What is Willow doing here? She wasn't on the guest list for a reason.
03:31 But she's... she's my best friend.
03:34 And of course, we know it only gets worse from there. There are hints that even Alador, her husband, feels trapped in their marriage.
03:41 Belos may be cold-hearted and evil, but Odalia really does give him a run for his money sometimes.
03:46 Okay, it's super strong. I think the crowd gets it.
03:50 She has a point, Odalia.
03:52 Didn't you hear me? It won't rest until its enemy is completely eliminated.
03:58 #7 Eda and Rain Give Themselves Up - Eda's Requiem
04:02 This has all sorts of darker undertones, and self-sacrifice for the greater good is only half of it.
04:08 Eda is in a terrible state of mind here, which makes her willingness to give herself up that much more heart-wrenching.
04:15 But it'll stop the Emperor, right? Then we play on.
04:20 Backed by some mournful music, this scene is one of the hardest to watch in the series.
04:24 It's visually stunning, but we can't help but hold our breath when everything, including Eda and Rain, begin to decay.
04:31 It's working. Keep playing.
04:33 Rain's realization that Eda has kids counting on her, and Eda being so clearly affected at that mention of them, always gets us.
04:41 Do you have kids?
04:43 Uh, they're not mine.
04:46 Mine. It doesn't matter. They both have real families to return to.
04:50 #6 Everyone Turned Into Puppets - For The Future and Watching and Dreaming
04:55 This is not presented as super dark. In fact, it's bright and colorful. But that's probably because the concept alone is horrifying enough.
05:03 You're not being very nice right now.
05:06 Wait!
05:07 This feels one of those fates worse than death that somehow makes it to PG Kids programming.
05:17 Obviously, this is reversible, so that's all fine and good.
05:20 But for the moment, when we make it back to the Boiling Isles after King's Rule, it's heartbreaking to see so many familiar faces puppet-fied.
05:28 Willow's reaction to her dad is hard to watch.
05:31 Stop! It's me! Have you seen Papa? Wait!
05:34 And some very important people face the same fate not long afterwards.
05:39 Rain's capture hurts the most, though.
05:41 Let me go!
05:49 Which is worse? Being turned into a marionette or being hallucinated into your own personal nightmare sequence?
05:55 I didn't mean it. I didn't mean it. I didn't mean it!
06:01 This whole storyline is ridiculously dark.
06:04 #5 I Think It Missed Me - Watching and Dreaming
06:08 Don't worry. I think it... missed?
06:11 If there's one person in a show we don't normally expect will die, it's the protagonist.
06:17 While it's not permanent, it's definitely a scary moment, especially seeing Luz's reaction as it happens.
06:23 Ida, King, looks like we're gonna be split up again.
06:28 I feel like I should be used to this feeling by now, but I still don't know what to say.
06:33 It also calls back to Ida after she was overtaken by her curse.
06:37 And now we're all emotional again.
06:39 The reactions to Luz's death are probably the worst part.
06:42 The dying is never so bad. It's the people we leave behind.
06:47 Owl Lady, you know where Luz is, right?
06:50 Back up, kid. I don't think I can control myself right now.
06:54 We see her dissolve into light glyphs, her palisman fall to the ground,
06:58 and the Collector becoming desperate and failing to understand what death means.
07:02 Well, it's okay. She just broke, so I'll fix her.
07:06 What? Why isn't it working?
07:13 Number 4. King's Sacrifice, King's Tide.
07:16 This entire episode is a doozy.
07:19 Go! Go, go, go! I can't hold the portal much longer!
07:23 Tensions are high and stakes are even higher.
07:26 In the gang's big face-off against Belos, King's safety is a priority,
07:30 and he's pushed to the sidelines while everyone else fights.
07:34 Buddy, it's about to get real scary. You stay here.
07:37 But I can help!
07:39 During this time, King frees the Collector in order to stop the draining spell,
07:43 which only replaces one problem with another.
07:46 The mark of him growing up is when he sacrifices himself to keep Luz and her friends safe.
07:51 We gotta stick together. We gotta stick together!
07:55 I'm sorry. Not this time. But I can keep you safe.
08:01 No!
08:02 Luz, I'm so happy I had you as a big sister.
08:05 His speech to Luz hits us right in the feels, especially as she fights so hard to stay with him.
08:11 Number 3. Golden Guard Graveyard, Hollow Mind.
08:15 What a shame. Out of all the Grimwalkers, you look the most like him.
08:21 What?
08:22 Here's the episode that helps the fandom piece together Belos' past, or at least a part of it.
08:27 The frames on the wall tell the story of two brothers, one of whom looks suspiciously like Hunter.
08:32 Or he would if his face wasn't crossed out.
08:35 The sight of all the broken Golden Guard helmets is enough to send shivers racing up our spines.
08:40 But once we know the whole story, it makes things even worse.
08:44 I say the Titan has big plans for you. And he does what he's told. Unlike the previous attempts.
08:51 I'm starting to think you make those things just to destroy them.
08:54 It's implied that Belos murdered his brother Caleb for marrying a witch,
08:58 and has since been creating Grimwalkers in his image.
09:01 The worst part is that clearly, these Grimwalkers don't get to hang around for very long.
09:07 What is this place?
09:09 Where the failures end up.
09:11 Number 2. The Draining Spell, King's Tide.
09:15 They're still alive.
09:23 Then we still have some work to do.
09:25 It's a sucker punch to the gut watching the Draining Spell actually take place after so much planning to stop it.
09:32 Julius? Julius? Julius, wake up!
09:35 The Resistance's efforts have failed, Belos's lies have won,
09:41 and all those who picked the wrong side had no idea what they were really in for.
09:46 No, we're too late.
09:48 What is happening?
09:53 We watch as every character we know and love who is fortunate enough to be branded with a coven sigil
09:59 sinks to their knees and has the life force drained out of them.
10:03 The spell does end before anyone dies, but not everyone was able to come out unscathed.
10:08 Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
10:12 Luz is almost petrified. King's Tide.
10:15 She comes dangerously close.
10:17 I'd do anything to save the people I love.
10:20 Please, fill him.
10:24 Pretty much any scene with Emperor Belos.
10:26 Varius. Is there a stronger word than "ew"?
10:29 Just a moment, Lilith.
10:34 Ah, that's better.
10:43 Gus' graveyard illusion. Through the Looking Glass ruins.
10:47 The Bleeding Eyes will do it.
10:49 [roaring]
10:53 The Basilisk's history. Yesterday's lie.
10:57 They were effectively just science experiments.
10:59 My kind went extinct a long time ago, but we were brought back.
11:05 They wanted to know how we drained magic.
11:08 I met a basilisk once. She hurt a lot of people.
11:11 For many of us, all we knew how to do was feed.
11:15 Hootie without his skin follies at the Coven Day Parade.
11:18 It'll take years to recover from the sight of this.
11:21 This is a world of magic and beauty. Just look.

11:46 #1 Hunter's Possession and Flapjack's Death, Thanks to Them
11:50 You know those episodes in children's cartoons that make you forget who the target audience is?
11:55 Yeah, that would be this. Hunter's been suffering at the hands of Belos for his entire life.
12:00 And just when he frees himself from his abuser, wouldn't you know he ends up literally possessed by him?
12:05 You did do something good. I thought this one was another lost cause.
12:11 Because of you, we can finish our work as witch hunters, starting with them!
12:17 While beautifully animated, it is so much to take in.
12:20 Flapjack was his first friend, and it's poetic in this horribly devastating way that Hunter is saved by him.
12:26 It's probably the saddest moment in the whole series and a terrible blow to the entire friend group.
12:32 Children's shows often skim by death by reviving their characters in some magical way or not completely killing them off.
12:39 But not this time.
12:41 Flapjack, don't... don't...
12:44 I already know.
