00:00 "The Philippines has summoned China's invoice," said the foreign ministry amid some of the
00:06 most tense confrontations between the country's vessels in the disputed South China Sea.
00:11 Meanwhile, the United States has accused China of interfering in the Philippines' maritime
00:15 operations and undermining regional stability.
00:19 Manila said its vessels were hit by Chinese water cannons on Saturday as they tried to
00:23 send supplies to Filipino fishermen at Scarborough Shoal, which was seized by Beijing in 2012
00:28 after a months-long standoff.
00:30 There was also a collision between Philippine and Chinese boats at Second Thomas Shoal,
00:34 where a handful of Filipino troops are stationed on a grounded warship, with both countries
00:39 trading blame.
00:40 On Sunday, meanwhile, ships trying to resupply sailors on board the grounded Sierra Madre
00:45 on Second Thomas Shoal in the Spatly Island was also hit by water cannon amid a collision
00:50 with the Chinese Coast Guard that Beijing blamed on Manila.
00:53 Pictures shared on social media showed the Philippines' boats had broken windows and
00:57 damaged decks from the incident.
01:00 Philippines Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Teresita Daza, during a press conference, said that
01:04 Manila had filed diplomatic protests and that Chinese ambassador has also been summoned
01:09 amid a rise in tensions in the disputed South China Sea.
01:12 Daza said declaring China's ambassador, Huang Shilian, as "persona non grata" in the Philippines
01:17 was also something that has to be seriously considered.
01:20 Meanwhile, Jonathan Malaya, assistant director-general of the National Security Council in the Philippines,
01:25 told reporters that the incident over the weekend was a serious escalation of Beijing's
01:29 tactics to assert their claim over the South China Sea.
01:32 Manila on Monday also said that the vessel, which was both sprayed with a water cannon
01:36 and rammed, was carrying a senior Philippine military official.
01:39 Philippine Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Romeo Bronner, who was on board the vessel,
01:43 told that he was not hurt by the incident and that he does not believe China knew he
01:47 was on board the boat.
01:49 China has repeatedly claimed the entire South China Sea, including waters and islands near
01:52 the shores of its neighbours, as part of its territory, ignoring the verdict of an international
01:56 tribunal which said that Beijing's claims have no legal basis.
02:01 Washington on Monday released a statement urging Beijing to stop its "dangerous and
02:05 destabilising conduct" in the South China Sea following the alleged ramming and water
02:09 cannoning of Filipino boats by Chinese vessels, which were on a resupply mission to Second
02:13 Thomas Shoal, where its soldiers are stationed.
02:16 The US also reiterated its support for its treaty ally, the Philippines, and reaffirmed
02:20 its commitment to the Mutual Defence Pact.
02:23 Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. deemed the presence of Chinese coastguard
02:27 vessels and maritime militia in his country's waters as illegal and their actions against
02:31 Filipinos as outright violations of international law.
02:34 In a post on X, he also said that Manila is determined to defend and protect its nation's
02:39 sovereign rights in the South China Sea amid aggression and provocations by Beijing.
02:43 China on Monday released a statement responding to the allegations by the Philippines and
02:47 called its actions "professional and mistaken".
