This individual, aware of their destination to Idlewyld House yet secretive about his source of information, introduces himself only as "the murderer" before vanishing, leaving behind a card bearing the name 'Mr. E'. At Idlewyld House, their host, Peter Landrigan, son of the renowned romantic novelist Harriet Landrigan, greets them.
The Danes inquire if they have been summoned to investigate a murder, but Peter assures them there's no such situation. However, the plot thickens when a guest is discovered deceased at the bottom of the stairs, and the self-proclaimed murderer is missing, his true identity still a mystery.
