The Colorado football community honored Deion Sanders on Wednesday night after the influential first-year coach was named Sports Illustrated’s 2023 Sportsperson of the Year last week.

00:46 Our President, Todd Solomon, and Michelle over there.
00:50 Our Board of Regents are right over there as well.

01:00 It was almost exactly one year ago when I hired Coach Prime.

01:05 >> Yep, that deserves applause.
01:08 Boy, was I lucky, right?
01:11 Anyway, I knew we were getting an incredible individual,
01:15 an incredible person, not to mention, in my opinion,
01:20 one of the best head football coaches in this country.

01:28 >> Since his arrival,
01:30 he has transcended football and his impact on our campus and
01:36 our community is unparalleled.
01:39 No one in the country has generated as much excitement for
01:44 a program that Coach Prime has done and
01:47 leadership in leading our football team.
01:50 Coach, thank you for that.

01:55 >> The excitement around our program
01:57 is the envy of the nation, and this is where Colorado should
02:01 always be.
02:02 And because of Coach, that envy is out there, and
02:06 the best part of that is we're just getting started.

02:15 So congratulations, Coach Prime, on the Sportsperson of the Year
02:19 honor and for the launch of Season 2 of Coach Prime.
02:24 I can't wait to see that,
02:25 even though I think I've seen a little bit of it.
02:28 But I join our Buff fans in our pride for
02:31 what you've accomplished here in just one year,
02:35 an excitement for an incredible future ahead.
02:38 So looking forward to the future,
02:40 thank all of you for being here tonight.
02:42 Now I'd like to introduce one of the best improv comedians in
02:46 the world, Karen Hammerberg,
02:49 who's the lead creative executive at Prime Video.

03:05 the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, and I would tour colleges.
03:09 So that's a little about me.
03:13 Hi, I'm Karen, I'm from Amazon Prime Video.
03:17 Like a couple of folks in the room tonight,
03:20 we did come with Coach from Jackson State to Colorado.
03:25 I don't know if we are considered Louie, but we do ship in a day.
03:30 So we've got that going for us.
03:33 But we're here because we believe.

03:45 doing both on and off the football field here in Colorado.
03:50 And we also believe that people cannot stop talking about what you
03:55 are doing on and off the football field here in Colorado.
03:59 Which I am so excited for you all to see the documentary,
04:05 it really shows the heart behind all of those headlines.
04:11 Tonight we are going to watch episodes two and three.
04:15 And before I introduce the next speaker, I just have a couple of quick thank yous.

06:03 First of all, thank you to the Chancellor, the President, Todd,
06:07 Rick George, the entire University of Colorado team.

06:13 This is such a fantastic place.
06:15 I wanna thank the SI team that's here, our Editor-in-Chief,
06:19 Steve Cannella, who along with the staff, chose Coach Prime for
06:23 this incredible honor.
06:25 Chris Perone, our GM, Hillary Dresner, who made tonight happen.
06:29 A huge thank you to Amazon for everything they do,
06:34 everything they ship to my house.
06:36 It's incredible.
06:38 But the programming you're doing is fantastic, and
06:41 we couldn't have a better partner for tonight.
06:45 This is personal for me, I'll get to that in a second.
06:48 And we have so much to celebrate tonight about the coach and
06:54 everything he's doing.
06:56 We could celebrate who he became during his childhood in Florida.
07:02 He made the all-century team in the state of Florida in high school.
07:08 Quite an honor.

07:14 >> We could celebrate what he did at Florida State.
07:19 We're happier with what he's doing here.
07:21 But we could celebrate that, cuz he was incredible.
07:24 We certainly could celebrate the greatest cornerback in the history of
07:29 professional football.

07:36 >> As I said to him a few minutes ago,
07:38 as a New York Giant fan, it was really painful.
07:41 >> [LAUGH] >> We could celebrate that he is
07:45 the greatest two-sport athlete of all time.
07:48 >> [APPLAUSE] >> With a little hat tip to Bo Jackson.

07:57 the only person in the history of pro sports to play in a Super Bowl and
08:02 a World Series in the same year.

08:11 >> And we could celebrate the man he
08:14 became coaching in high school, worked his way up from the very bottom,
08:19 high school football, and he helped start a program, which is incredible.
08:23 We could celebrate his work at Jackson State, but
08:26 I wanna talk about the Buffs.

08:33 >> Now, I said this is personal for me.
08:36 I have a daughter here who's a junior in the front row here, Skyler.
08:40 >> [APPLAUSE] >> And Skyler and
08:43 a few people have started an Instagram account called SI University Buffs.
08:50 Please go there and follow it.
08:52 We follow all the teams.
08:56 And I've been coming here for three years, watching this program.
08:59 So it was two very long years and one absolutely incredible year.
09:07 And what we wanna celebrate is not Deion the coach.
09:12 We wanna celebrate Deion the man, and that's why we're here.

09:22 >> We wanna celebrate Deion the mentor.
09:24 We wanna celebrate Deion the change agent.
09:28 We wanna celebrate Deion the family man, the father, the son.
09:35 That's why we're here.
09:37 We wanna celebrate what he has done for this program,
09:41 what he has done for the players, what he has done for this community,
09:46 what he has done for this school and the change in the landscape of this school,
09:51 what he has done to change college football.

10:03 for this community, for his family, and for all of you.
10:07 That is why Sports Illustrated has chosen him as Sportsperson of the Year.
10:12 It is our biggest honor each year.
10:15 The greatest teams and the greatest athletes in the history of sport
10:20 have been chosen for this award.
10:22 And there isn't a more deserving person than Coach Prime, and
10:26 I couldn't be more excited to be here.
10:29 And this is his seventh time on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and
10:33 certainly the most rewarding.
10:35 And with that, I'd like to celebrate and congratulate Coach Prime.

13:40 And you have been the best set of fans
13:45 that I have ever experienced in my entire life.

13:52 From day one, when Rick George, my dear friend,
13:58 brought me here, you were there.
14:01 For the spring game, you sold us out,
14:06 you were there.
14:07 For the first game, home game, until the last one,
14:12 you sold it out, you were there.
14:14 So my expectation of you from here on,
14:21 that you're gonna be there.
14:25 Rick, I don't know when these spring game tickets go on,
14:29 but I'm pretty sure they're gonna sell it out
14:31 because I believe that they're gonna be there.
14:36 To all the team, I thank you, you are wonderful.
14:39 I cannot wait 'til they get the chance to see you up close.
14:42 I know we are intrusive and invasive with the cameras
14:45 all over campus and some things that we're doing.
14:48 I just heard the rumor, I had just heard this
14:49 for the first time, that they say you could tell
14:51 where I am because you'll see all the cameras on campus.
14:55 That's the first time I heard that.
14:56 And I'm thankful, Constance, Mike, Sam,
15:00 the whole team, Jose, the whole SMAC family, thank you.
15:04 My crazy sons, all three of you guys, I thank you as well.
15:09 Team, everybody's a part of the team,
15:13 will you stand up please?
15:15 Stand up, everybody's part of the team.
15:18 Coaches, as well as administrators,
15:32 I wanna thank you because regardless of the wins,
15:35 regardless of the losses, you never gave up.
15:39 And that is so admirable.
15:41 And the one who never gives up,
15:43 and she told me something that was so vital
15:45 that changed my life, she said,
15:46 "Regardless of whatever the score is,
15:48 "she will not leave until the last second
15:50 "ticks off the clock."
15:51 And that's the finest, most beautiful,
15:53 most sexiest woman in this house, and that's Peggy.

16:00 It is my challenge to all you Buffs fans,
16:19 it's my challenge to that whole entire team,
16:22 it's my challenge to the coaching staff,
16:24 it's my challenge to the support staff,
16:27 Amazon Prime, Prime Video, it's my challenge
16:29 to Sports Illustrated that we're gonna get Peggy
16:33 to a bowl game next season.
