00:00 Next time you pop a meftal, a commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, to get
00:07 rid of your pain, do so after consulting a doctor on dosage and clarifying whether you
00:13 need it at all.
00:14 The Indian Pharmacopeia Commission has issued a drug safety alert about the common painkiller
00:19 saying its constituent, methanamic acid, triggers severe allergic reactions like the DRESS syndrome,
00:26 which affects your internal organs.
00:28 The methanamic acid painkiller is prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis,
00:33 osteoarthritis, dysmenorrhea, mild to moderate pain, inflammation, fever, dental pain, period
00:38 pain, etc.
00:39 The commission in its alert said that a preliminary analysis of adverse drug reactions from the
00:45 Pharmacovigilance Programme of India database revealed DRESS syndrome.
00:50 DRESS syndrome is a severe allergic reaction caused by certain medicines.
00:55 Its symptoms include skin rash, fever, and lymphadenopathy, which can occur between two
00:59 and eight weeks after taking the drug.
01:01 "Health care professionals, patients and consumers are advised to closely monitor the possibility
01:05 of the above adverse drug reactions associated with the use of the above suspected drug,"
01:10 the alert said.
01:11 But doctors say the side effects are extremely rare, already known, and that they take care
01:15 to assess a patient while prescribing a limited dosage.
01:19 Many doctors confirmed that they hadn't seen adverse reactions during the practice, but
01:23 cautioned that reactions to the drug depended on the individual patient.
01:27 The real problem is unregulated overuse of the drug.
01:30 DRESS syndrome, i.e. drug rash with acinophilia and systemic symptoms, is a severe allergic
01:36 reaction affecting around 10% of individuals, potentially deadly and caused by certain medications.
01:42 It is characterized by fever, skin rash, lymphadenopathy, hematological abnormalities, and internal organ
01:48 involvement and manifests two to eight weeks after the drug has been taken.
01:52 Vigilance in medication usage is crucial to prevent this severe reaction.
01:56 Take the drug as per the advice of a medical professional only.
01:59 Furthermore, the IPC in their alert has said, in case of an adverse reaction, people should
02:03 immediately report to the National Coordination Centre of the PVPI by filing a form on their
02:08 website or through their helpline number 1800 180 3024.
