00:30 - When I was a boy, my first impression of America
00:35 was a man walking on the moon.
00:42 Neil Armstrong, 1969.
00:49 I thought these Americans are mad.
00:53 They are mad.
00:55 But I thought, what can this country do?
00:59 What can these people do when they put their mind to it?
01:02 It's incredible.
01:03 John F. Kennedy was the one, in 1963 he said,
01:14 "By the end of the decade,
01:16 "we're gonna put a man on the moon."
01:18 Well, it's not because it was on everybody's mind.
01:28 It just was the right thing to do,
01:31 and it was,
01:32 it's what we're asking now,
01:38 President Bush, Prime Minister Blair,
01:41 and all the other world leaders to do.
01:43 We're asking them to do something extraordinary,
01:49 not put a man on the moon,
01:50 more like put mankind back on Earth.
01:54 (audience applauding)
01:58 We have the technology, we have the resources,
02:03 we have the know-how to end the extreme poverty.
02:08 If we have the will,
02:11 and I believe we have the will.
02:26 Others, you know, we have the civil rights movement,
02:29 others ended apartheid, others tore back the Iron Curtain.
02:34 That's what this generation, that's what's up to us.
02:37 Our moonshot, our putting a man on the moon,
02:39 we are gonna end extreme poverty,
02:41 we're gonna make poverty history.
02:44 That's what's fallen to us to do.
02:46 I believe that's not an impossible adventure.
02:53 I believe in 50 years, they'll look back on this moment,
02:56 and they'll say,
02:59 there were some people at a time who said,
03:04 "It's not okay to have a child die
03:07 "for the lack of a 20 cent immunization.
03:10 "It's not okay to have a child die
03:13 "for lack of food in his belly in the 21st century.
03:16 "That's not okay anymore."
03:17 (audience applauding)
03:20 I know you know that,
03:26 but I'd like you to tell President Bush that,
03:33 Prime Minister Blair that,
03:34 and any other politician you see.
03:36 You can do it quite easy, you just take out your cell phone.
