00:00 In 1988, the Buffalo Bills came in red hot
00:03 to Riverfront Stadium at 11-1,
00:06 and you guys were 9-3.
00:08 You handled your business that day,
00:09 but you probably thought in the back of your mind,
00:11 we might see this ball club again,
00:13 which you did in the AFC Championship game.
00:16 Talk to us here about the mental edge
00:18 that you might have saying,
00:19 we handled them before, we can do it again,
00:21 if they meet in the NFC playoffs.
00:23 - I think it's always tough to beat a team twice
00:26 in the same year, especially when they are good teams
00:28 and they're from different divisions.
00:30 It's one thing if you know each other
00:31 from your own division, but it's a little bit different
00:33 when you're in the same conference.
00:34 For us, I have to be honest,
00:37 the Buffalo Bills were a really, really tough team.
00:39 The second time we saw them in that AFC Championship,
00:41 it was a much different game, it was a much tougher game.
00:44 And we got away by, we were running the ball back then,
00:47 later on in the season,
00:49 and that's when you know you're really good
00:50 is when you're able to impose your will
00:52 on the opposing team that you're playing against.
00:54 And I think that's one of the reasons
00:55 why we were able to beat Jim Kelly
00:57 and the Buffalo Bills before they went on
00:58 to four straight Super Bowls.
01:00 So it was just a matter of knowing who they were.
01:03 They knew who we were very well.
01:05 We also were running the no huddle offense,
01:07 which Mark Levy complained about
01:09 prior to that AFC Championship game.
01:11 So we had a little distraction to deal with
01:13 because Paul Tagliabue at the time
01:15 was gonna outlaw what we were doing the whole season
01:18 going into that game.
01:19 So Mark Levy, at least for two days,
01:21 where it was in our head,
01:22 and then certainly when we got there to the game on Sunday,
01:25 we would use that as motivation to ultimately beat them.
