International Volunteer Day is when we celebrate and promote the impact of volunteering. The RFS wants to say a big thank you to the more than 70,000 volunteers, who give up their own time to protect the communities of NSW.

00:00 What I enjoy most about being a volunteer is literally coming up here on a weekend,
00:05 seeing the people coming from all different walks of life and doing something different,
00:09 getting themselves out of their comfort zone and learning, sitting there learning about
00:14 something that they can help their community in giving back.
00:18 I enjoy giving back to the community.
00:20 When we show up, quite often it's people at their darkest hour.
00:25 So whether it be a structure fire, they've lost everything or even a simple car accident.
00:32 Community engagement is the human element to the RFS.
00:35 I think when you look at the different ways we can reduce hazard, I think community engagement
00:40 is one of the strongest ways to actually get to people and have them prepare themselves,
00:46 their family and their community.
00:49 I just feel like we're just firefighters.
00:51 All of us wear the same kit and it doesn't matter whether you're male, female, young
00:56 or old, you get on a truck and the minute you put your kit on, you're a firefighter
01:02 and that's it.
