00:00 Neeraj Chopra standing proud wearing gold for the men's javelin throw in the Asian Games 2023.
00:07 But we kind of expected that.
00:10 What we probably didn't expect was to see Kishore Kumar Jain wearing silver.
00:15 Welcome to the rock concert of Indian Athletics where Chopra is the lead vocalist and the party's just getting started.
00:25 Getting started.
00:26 On your marks, get set, go!
00:41 A field with a track. Not the kind of fields that Indians have been known to work on.
00:49 In 2019 we set up a partnership with the Odisha government to bring athletics into Odisha.
00:55 A very forward thinking government.
00:57 And we had no athletes at the start.
00:59 I mean I remember first going to Odisha and I walked around and there wasn't a single person on the athletics track.
01:05 We didn't get as much performance as we got facilities.
01:10 There was no one other than job security, railway and services.
01:15 And there was no financial support from home or anyone else.
01:19 And the newspapers were selected and nothing else was available.
01:22 The trickle of our track and field medals too was a testament that India wasn't ticking all boxes.
01:30 But in the past decade we have built not just stadiums but mindsets.
01:41 A lot has changed. We have more exposure. People are now investing and knowing what track and field is and what sport is it.
01:48 I think the national competitions have improved both in the quality of the delivery in terms of the technical level,
01:58 the officiating and the strength in depth has hugely improved.
02:03 One of our own athletes Jyoti Ararjee, she won the nationals in 2019.
02:08 I think she ran 13.9, just broke the 14 second barrier in the hurdles.
02:13 She is now running 12.7 and she won nationals and I think five girls were under 13.6.
02:19 As the stage was setting, India needed a rock star for the gig to truly begin.
02:29 Enter Neeraj in Tokyo.
02:31 He did his homework. He was near the line and the line was dry.
02:35 So he threw it in the dry area and he got a good grip.
02:38 So you know, it had an effect and you know you have to do your homework also.
02:44 Neeraj Chopra, he has given athletics an eye.
02:49 People look up to athletics now.
02:51 Athletics was nothing for him before.
02:53 They were like P T Usha, Milkha Singh, great names.
02:56 But he was there for them and Neeraj Chopra has won the Olympics. No one has done that before.
03:02 At the world stage, there was no one called India to look up to.
03:06 N.S. Bhai came and he not only won a medal but a gold medal.
03:10 From there, he has become a path for us.
03:12 Chopra's javelin has forged a new path for others to follow.
03:18 There is a lot of competition in javelin.
03:20 So like if you are winning nationals, you can win.
03:24 Commonwealth, any medal.
03:26 And all those around him are earning their time in the spotlight.
03:30 So in Indian athletics, there is Murali Sri Shankar and Tehswin Shankar.
03:35 Like both Shankars, one is a high jumper, one is a long jumper.
03:38 But I really love the fact that how they think.
03:40 The thing is at a light level.
03:42 I think like Neeraj Chopra doesn't think like other people.
03:46 He is a very strong athlete.
03:48 He is a very strong athlete.
03:50 I think like Neeraj Chopra doesn't think like other people.
03:55 When I have taken the athletes into Europe, Jodhpuri and Amland particularly.
04:00 They have been so supportive and they really want Indians to do well.
04:04 They want Indians in their meets.
04:05 I spoke to a lot of meet organisers and the agents.
04:08 They are desperate to get Indian athletes in their meets.
04:11 With its current generation of track and field stars,
04:17 India is set to put on a show at Paris 2024.
04:21 The next gen will not only want medals, it will want to break world records.
04:30 People ask me all the time, can an Indian run under 10 seconds for the 100?
04:36 I say yes.
04:37 Why are you so sure?
04:38 I say, why wouldn't I be?
04:40 Absolutely they can.
04:41 If a kid is to come up to you now and say that I want to be the fastest man in the country,
04:45 what would be your message to that kid?
04:47 You have to beat me.
04:48 I will beat you.
04:50 I will beat you.
04:52 I will beat you.
04:53 I will beat you.
04:54 (upbeat music)
04:56 you
