00:00 Hello sir. God you're looking dapper tonight.
00:02 Thank you very much, appreciate it.
00:03 Thank you so much for your time, for stopping for me.
00:05 We're here at Biffers, do you have a history with the Biffers?
00:07 Have you got like, does it have a place in your heart, the British Independent Film Awards?
00:11 I do, I do. I've always loved coming to the Biffers.
00:15 I won a prize at the Biffers many, many years ago for a film called Pride,
00:19 so I have a great, great, great memory of that night.
00:22 So it's amazing to be here.
00:23 We're going to have to pause for a second, but okay, thank you so much.
00:28 And we'll edit around that.
00:29 You are nominated tonight of course, with a fantastic cast.
00:35 Is it a case of like, we don't care who wins as long as one of us does?
00:38 Yeah, a little bit of that, yeah.
00:39 And also even if none of us does, we'll still speak to each other.
00:42 I mean, I haven't asked, but I hope that they still recognise me in the morning.
00:47 It's a bit of a tease for the reason why you're here today,
00:49 because All of Us Strangers, you're all nominated, it's a fantastic film.
00:52 I've heard, but it's not out yet, it's not out until January.
00:54 Can you please just give me a sense of what we can expect from All of Us Strangers?
00:57 As All of Us Strangers is one of the saddest, most beautiful films you'll ever see.
01:02 It's a really beautiful film about the idea that what would you say to your parents
01:06 if you could see them long after their death?
01:09 And not just after people's death, but what might we say to each other,
01:13 people that we don't have in our lives anymore?
01:16 So it's a really beautiful idea.
01:17 And it's got this incredible cast with Clare Foy, Paul Meskell, Jamie Bell.
01:21 2023 has been an interesting year in the industry in general because of the strike.
01:25 However, you are so prolific in TV film and on the stage as well.
01:29 I know you just kind of finished a long run of one man show of multiple characters.
01:33 This is a very vague question.
01:35 What is the secret to being so busy, but also keeping it together?
01:38 Oh, it's all just on the surface.
01:41 Yeah, I just finished doing a play and you just want to,
01:45 I like to change it up a little bit, do a bit of theatre, a bit of film, a bit of TV,
01:49 a bit of radio and then a bit of sleeping.
01:51 So no, I was very lucky to be able to work during the strike, actually.
01:55 We had organised doing this play long before the strike ever came up in conversation.
02:03 So I was really lucky just to be able to work.
02:05 But it's really wonderful to be able to just talk about,
02:07 because particularly with independent films,
02:09 it does rely on people talking about them and getting out in front of them
02:12 to get people to see them,
02:13 because the films may not have a big studio marketing campaign behind them.
02:17 And so one of the things that I think is really important,
02:20 particularly for a film like All of Us Strangers,
02:22 is that people see it in community, you know?
02:25 I want to keep the film theatres open, you know,
02:27 rather than just watching it in our little boxes.
02:29 I agree.
02:30 And finally, for me, you mentioned the strike in 2023,
02:33 but we have been working still and we're back at work now.
02:36 How are you going to be reflecting on 2023 in terms of your career?
02:38 Because it's been an unusual one, hasn't it?
02:40 I try not to reflect too much.
02:43 The film comes out in the States before it comes out here in London.
02:49 So we've got to go and sell our wares over in LA
02:52 and then we'll come back and sell our wares over here.
02:53 So be patient with us.
