With Congress crossing the majority mark in Telangana, state’s party chief Revanth Reddy is most likely to become the chief minister of the state. 00:00 Barely two years after being appointed as the President of the Telangana Congress, 54-year-old
00:15 Revanth Reddy, the former Telugu Desam party MLA who had cut his teeth in the right-wing
00:20 student union Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABBP) has led the Grand Old Party to a stellar
00:26 victory in the Assembly elections in the state. Congress' Revanth Reddy is comfortably leading
00:32 from the Kodangal and Kamareddy seats. With Congress crossing the majority mark in Telangana,
00:38 state's party chief Revanth Reddy is most likely to become the Chief Minister of the
00:42 state. As per the early trends from the Election Commission, Congress is leading with 65 seats,
00:48 BRS with 39 seats and BJP just 9 seats. A two-time MLA and currently representing Malkaj
00:56 Giri in Lok Sabha, Revanth Reddy joined Congress in 2017. After his appointment as Telangana
01:02 Congress Chief in July 2021, Reddy was increasingly visible on the ground, leading street protests
01:08 on a host of issues against the ruling BRS government. Revanth Reddy's style of functioning
01:14 as Telangana Congress Chief earned him several detractors within the party ranks, but the
01:18 54-year-old appears to have led a winning campaign in the southern state. What's more,
01:23 Mr Reddy is leading against Chief Minister and Bharat Rashtra Samiti K. Chandrashekhar
01:28 Rao in BRS stronghold Kamareddy. Learning lessons from Karnataka where the visibility
01:33 and prominence of local leaders paid off, the Congress leadership bagged Reddy to the
01:37 team, despite voices of protests from his rivals within the party. The high command's
01:42 choice of Mr Reddy as the competitor against KCR was a clear move to amplify his image
01:47 in the run-up to the state polls. What is interesting to note is that voters in Kamareddy,
01:52 a BRS stronghold, have voted for the party significantly after Telangana was made a separate
01:57 state in 2014. Reddy is also leading in Kodangal, the second seat he is contesting from. Earlier,
02:04 the state Congress Chief had predicted a landslide victory for his party. Right after exit polls
02:09 projected a Congress win in Telangana, Mr Reddy had said, "Congress is going to get
02:14 landslide victory this time and the same thing is reflected in the exit polls. We are going
02:18 to get over 80 seats." On questions on whether he will be the chief minister if the Congress
02:23 wins, he said, "There is a screening committee, a selection committee and then the CWC has
02:28 to take a call. In Congress, there is a process for everything. Being the PCC president, I
02:33 will have to obey every order from the high command." The counting of votes to decide
02:38 the fate of 2,290 candidates in Telangana began on Sunday morning.
