00:00 Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro addressed thousands on Friday ahead of next Sunday's
00:17 consensus referendum on sovereignty over the Guayana and Zekieva.
00:23 In Palestine, more than 100 people were killed in an Israeli attack on a building in the
00:27 Havalia refugee camp in northern Gaza Strip.
00:32 The third day of the Dubai COP28 climate summit took place in the United Arab Emirates delegation
00:36 participating in a working meeting focused on how to reduce CO2 emissions.
00:45 Hello welcome from the south, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Lesos studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:51 We begin with the news.
00:52 President Nicolas Maduro addressed thousands of Venezuelans on Friday in Caracas ahead
00:56 of next Sunday's consensus referendum on sovereignty over the Guayana and Zekieva.
01:00 The event was part of the closing "Venezuela Toda" campaign, which has rallied millions
01:05 of Venezuelans across the country in defense of the historical nation's rights over the
01:09 disputed territory.
01:11 During his speech, President Maduro gave a comprehensive account of the history of the
01:15 dispute and reiterated the inalienable rights of the country over that territory and called
01:20 all Venezuelans to vote on Sunday for the dignity and sovereignty of the Bolivarian
01:28 nation.
01:31 The Zekievo is ours.
01:35 We are going to defend the Zekievo because the Zekievo is ours.
01:40 So it is a national cause from several generations.
01:47 We have seen for over years the fight, the struggle of our grandparents, of our great
01:57 grandparents since the 19th century when the British Empire leveraged from Venezuela's
02:08 weakness.
02:11 President Maduro also referred to the decision of the International Court of Justice about
02:15 Venezuela's dispute with the Guayana and the media manipulation against Venezuela.
02:21 And so they manipulated the truth, they bent the truth, but they lost.
02:40 And I'm going to say that there's a lot of money behind all that.
02:49 They used the international media.
02:52 That's why on Sunday all Venezuelans, aside from our differences, all Venezuelans must
03:04 go out to the streets in a single voice, with a single flag, with our flag, blue, red, and
03:16 yellow, on Sunday to vote.
03:21 The justice system in Peru blocks again on Friday a pardon for dictator Alberto Fujimori.
03:26 The judge who was to decide on Fujimori's release sent the controversy back to the Constitutional
03:30 Court, which considered as valid a pardon that had already been previously overturned.
03:36 Alberto Fujimori is serving a 25-year sentence for being the mastermind behind 25 murders
03:40 and serious injuries allegedly committed during his administration by a clandestine military
03:45 squad.
03:55 On the other hand, the Fourth National Preparatory Investigation Court issued an order to prosecute
04:00 Keiko Fujimori while formally ordering her to go to trial for the alleged crime of money
04:04 laundering and criminal organization as part of the cocktail case investigation.
04:09 The prosecution has asked for 30 years in prison for the former presidential candidate.
04:19 In Colombia, the 8th International Conference of the Villa Campesina to face the food crisis
04:24 and to ensure a future for humanity began.
04:27 The conference, held in Bogota, will host more than 500 agrarian delegations from around
04:32 the world and will address a variety of crucial issues for the global farmers' movement.
04:38 The meeting will also focus on the debate and review of fundamental political documents
04:42 that support the actions of the Villa Campesina and highlights the importance of a collective
04:48 and unified action to address the challenges.
04:50 In this sense, they will exhibit agroecological experiences and practices of the organizations
04:56 of the farmers' movement, hand in hand with the agroecological institutes and schools.
05:06 I believe that this 8th International Conference is so important.
05:10 There we are going to propose a route in order to continue strengthening the peasant movement
05:15 in Latin America and the world, to contract the whole issue of the model of dispossession
05:20 against the model of a big capital, the model of a big development, which has historically
05:25 generated violence in the territories.
05:28 I believe that today we need a great movement and a great unity to continue strengthening
05:33 the peasant movement for the comprehensive and popular agrarian reform.
05:40 This conference is a very important event for our international movement.
05:43 It is the moment in which we meet all regions and continents to make political decisions
05:48 about the future we want to do in the coming years as a global peasant movement.
05:52 And we want to defend our priorities.
05:54 And it is also a very important moment of solidarity to support each other.
05:58 And so, yes, to give solidarity to all our members in many countries of the world.
06:05 The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced a 20% salary increase that
06:09 will take effect as of January 1, 2024.
06:12 During the press conference, the head of state assured that the increase was developed after
06:16 an agreement between the labor sector and the business sector of the country.
06:20 LĂłpez Obrador assured that this measure means the fulfillment of one of his commitments,
06:25 and when he assumed the presidency, he promised that the minimum wage would be doubled.
06:37 If we take into account that in the free zone of the northern border, the salary goes from
06:41 88 pesos in 2018 to 375 pesos a day as of January 1, that is from 2,687 pesos a month
06:50 to 11,403 pesos a month.
06:53 This has not happened for at least 50 years.
06:58 So that is why I say it is historic.
07:01 What a great way to commemorate the five years of our government by showing that progress
07:05 is possible.

07:47 Welcome back from the south.
07:48 On Saturday in Palestine, more than 100 people were killed in an Israeli attack on a building
07:52 in the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip.
07:56 According to local media reports, upon the expiration of the humanitarian troops agreed
08:00 a week ago with the joint mediation of Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, the Israeli
08:04 troops resumed their attacks on the Gaza Strip, alleging alleged firing by the militias of
08:11 the Hamas Palestinian movement.
08:13 In this regard, the occupation forces attacked a house in which families and displaced people
08:18 were sheltering in the Jabalia camp.
08:20 The Israeli attacks against the people of Gaza that began on October 7th have claimed
08:25 the lives of more than 16,000 Palestinians, according to the latest official figures.
08:34 The recent Israeli attacks in Gaza have been relentless, with strikes coming from air,
08:39 land, and sea.
08:40 The targets have primarily been residential buildings, resulting in widespread destruction
08:44 and loss of life.
08:45 In this report, our correspondent Noor Harsine will delve into the details of these attacks
08:50 and their impact on the people of Gaza.
08:53 The operation, the Israeli operation in Gaza continues, and actually it was one intensive
09:00 overnight and also early hours of this morning.
09:03 Crazily, the Israeli forces are attacking Gaza from everywhere, east, west, south, and
09:10 north, from air, land, and sea.
09:14 Intensive Israeli shelling, bombings, striking the Gaza Strip, and northern Gaza, and specifically
09:20 in Jabalia refugee camp.
09:22 The Israeli warplanes hit the blocks of residential blocks in Jabalia refugee camp with tens of
09:32 air raids, and at the same time the tanks were shelling at the homes.
09:36 So there is reports that talked about a huge fire that were set inside the Palestinian
09:43 residential homes there because of the heavy air strikes.
09:47 Meanwhile, here in middle and southern Gaza, it is no different story, actually.
09:52 This area that the IDF talked about at the beginning of this war as saying that it is
09:57 a safe area for Palestinians, Palestinians can evacuate from northern Gaza to southern
10:03 Gaza, actually most of the Israeli attacks overnight were in southern Gaza on the Palestinian
10:10 city of Khan Younis.
10:13 The Israeli forces performed what we call a fire belt, and this is a phrase that we
10:19 use to explain a series of Israeli strikes that targets the same street or the same neighborhood.
10:26 We're talking about hundreds of people that were killed.
10:29 We're talking about hundreds that were injured during the last 24 hours.
10:37 We can actually describe this day as even worse than the days before the humanitarian
10:44 truce with Israel.
10:45 Nurhar Rezian, Telesor, Gaza.
10:48 Spokesman for the United Nations Defense Jaric said that the world body regret the resumption
10:52 of Israeli hostilities in Gaza.
10:54 The Secretary General said he regretted the resumption of hostilities in Gaza and Israel.
11:03 He urges all concerned parties to swiftly find a way to resume the pause in the fighting
11:08 and facilitate the release of more hostages.
11:12 We appeal to the parties not to resort to further military action that can only make
11:17 the already catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza worse and to spare civilians from
11:23 more suffering.
11:26 Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters prayed outside the Israeli embassy in Washington,
11:30 D.C. to call for a ceasefire in Gaza as Israel and Hamas resumed fighting after a seven-day
11:35 truce expired.
11:36 I think that the pause was humanitarian at all.
11:41 It should be a permanent ceasefire.
11:43 It doesn't make sense to bomb all these people, kill all these people, and then just be like,
11:50 it's okay, we'll pause, and then immediately go back to killing people.
11:53 So that's the first thing I saw when I woke up this morning.
11:55 It was like three hours into the end of the ceasefire and they're blowing up residential
11:59 neighborhoods, they're going to killing kids again.
12:01 And that's the thing, like it's not a war when you're just blowing up endlessly.
12:04 So, I mean, it sucks.
12:06 And I mean, that's why we're here, because we want a ceasefire, we want it to end.
12:09 And I mean, more so than anything else, it's just a propaganda that the people in the U.S.
12:14 see about like being pro-Palestinian, tying us with like Hamas and stuff.
12:18 It's like, yo, I grew up here.
12:19 I don't know what Hamas is, but like we, everyone just wants peace.

13:03 Welcome back from the South.
13:06 On Saturday, the third day of the Dubai COP28 climate summit took place in the United Arab
13:10 Emirates, delegations participating in a working meeting focused on how to reduce CO2 emissions.
13:16 In the framework of the COP28 third day, the leaders of the G77 plus China met under the
13:20 presidency of the Cuban President Miguel DĂaz-Canel, and with the objective of giving space for
13:25 reflection and coordination of positions among the countries of the global South in the face
13:30 of the climate negotiations.
13:32 For his part, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, as part of his efforts to eliminate
13:36 coal and gas, affirmed that a burning planet cannot be saved with a fossil fuel fire hose.
13:42 This COP28 summit is a stage where the negotiators will continue to forge agreements to decide
13:47 how to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees by the end of the century, as well as achieve
13:53 a just transition to new energy sources.
14:02 During the third day of the Dubai climate summit, Barbados Prime Minister, Mian Maud,
14:06 reassured that policies must be adopted to help mitigate global temperature increases
14:11 in order to avoid the loss of human lives.
14:15 "In the age of superlatives, we've seen this year one third of the days of the year exceed
14:23 1.5 degrees.
14:24 In Glasgow, I said this was a death sentence.
14:28 It is a death sentence for many.
14:31 And the reality is that unless we change course and adopt the policies that can in fact help
14:38 mitigate that increase in temperatures, we are going to see far more lives lost and far
14:45 more damage done."
14:47 Barbados Prime Minister Mian Maud also said the world needs a global agreement to regulate
14:51 methane gas emissions.
14:53 "The global methane agreement that the world needs to see has not yet come.
15:01 And while we are seeing countries move towards greater regulation, we need to be able to
15:06 have concrete action with respect to the controlling of methane, largely because its damage in
15:13 the near term is far greater than even CO2.
15:17 Where is it going to be found for the progress to be made and to avoid the tipping point?
15:23 We need oil and gas companies to agree to fix the leaks in their pipelines and to ensure
15:29 that they also stop the flaring.
15:32 The bottom line is that there have been voluntary commitments, but that has not gotten us very
15:37 far.
15:38 We need strong regulation and compliance to ensure that we can minimize the extent to
15:43 which that continues to lead and hurl the world into."
15:48 For his part, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Brown, denounced that
15:52 the big oil companies and rich nations continue to reap profits while the survival of other
15:57 nations is at stake.
15:59 "We are facing an existential paradox.
16:02 The smallest contributors to global CO2 emissions get among the hardest hit by climate catastrophes.
16:11 This is not just an environmental crisis.
16:14 It is a glaring testament to a world where profits are prioritized over people and planets.
16:22 It is a world where oil and gas conglomerates, shielded by the power of wealthy nations,
16:29 continue to reap astronomical profits while the survival of nations like ours hangs in
16:35 the balance.
16:36 The irony is as bitter as it is unjust."
16:40 Madagascar's Constitutional Court announced the final results of the presidential elections
16:45 backing the victory of incumbent President Andrew Carolina.
16:48 The European Union and United States on Fire led international calls for Andre Rajoelina
16:53 to ease political tensions in Madagascar after his presidential election win was confirmed
16:58 by a top court.
16:59 The Constitutional Court rejected opposition complaints of fraud and said Rajoelina secured
17:03 59 percent of the vote in the November 16 vote.
17:06 The 49-year-old former party organizer is now clear to start a second straight term
17:12 without the need for a runoff.
17:14 "It is the people's choice at the ballot box.
17:24 Today the majority of the Malagasy people have expressed themselves through the presidential
17:28 elections.
17:29 The Malagasy people have chosen their president.
17:31 And so today I would like to thank the Malagasy people for their wisdom, as I have always
17:36 said."
17:37 "At the request of Sudanese authorities, the UN Security Council on Friday ended the
17:43 World Bodies Public Commission in the African country, which ravaged by more than seven
17:47 months of fighting between rival generals.
17:49 Following a letter from Khartoum demanding an immediate end to the United Nations Integrated
17:53 Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan, the Security Council adopted a resolution terminating
17:59 its mandate as of Sunday.
18:01 Starting Monday, a three-month transition period would begin to allow for the departure
18:05 of UNITAM's personnel, and the transfer of its tasks to other UN agencies where appropriate
18:10 and to an extent feasible."
