00:00 It's probably pretty easy to see the story of the game.
00:04 Free throws down the stretch, regardless
00:06 of how bad we played in terms of our defensive rebounding.
00:11 We give up 18 defensive rebounds or offensive rebounds
00:14 to a team like that.
00:15 And give them 26 second chance points,
00:18 you're not going to have a chance to win that game.
00:21 And we really did, had we made some free throws
00:24 down the stretch and cleaned up some of those things
00:29 that we've been trying to shore up the entire season.
00:32 So yeah, six assists, some guards average that.
00:39 That's what we had tonight.
00:41 It's just not sustainable to try to score,
00:43 like create everything one on one.
00:46 So six assists, 12 turnovers, consequently, they
00:50 had 15 assists on six turnovers.
00:53 And two point game with two minutes
00:55 to go, regardless of the saying all that.
00:57 Yeah.
00:59 Josh, you just talked to Jesse.
01:01 First of all, how difficult is it to play without him?
01:04 And is it hard to ask him to be aggressive, but not foul?
01:09 Yeah, I mean, there's a couple of those I didn't understand
01:11 whatsoever, to be honest with you.
01:12 But what do you do?
01:13 I can't get into it.
01:16 It was called like a old Big East game.
01:19 And he's a Hall of Fame coach.
01:24 He knows what he's doing.
01:26 He can be as aggressive as possible,
01:28 knowing he's got a deep bench.
01:30 So they can't call everything, every single possession.
01:36 So yeah, we drew a lot of fouls.
01:38 But I don't think that's the story of the game.
01:41 There's certainly a lot of possessions down the stretch
01:44 that I wasn't really happy with the way it was taken care of.
01:48 So without Jesse on the floor, how detrimental
01:50 is that for you guys?
01:51 I mean, it's huge from a rebounding perspective.
01:54 I mean, you try to clean the glass up
01:57 with the guys we got out there.
01:59 And they fought like heck.
02:01 I mean, you look at JoJo and Quinn, the 5'6".
02:05 So they're out there fighting.
02:07 But they're outmanned in a lot of ways
02:10 with size and strength and fresh legs.
02:13 And yeah, it's a shame we couldn't clean up
02:18 two or three of those.
02:21 18 is just hard to overcome.
02:24 You come up with three or four more possessions
02:27 that you didn't give them a second chance.
02:28 And we're probably winning that ball game.
02:31 On the defensive glass to what you were talking about,
02:35 what else can you tell your team to do, though?
02:37 You're shorthanded.
02:38 You can't really tell them to be more aggressive,
02:41 shove them back, even when they're boxing out well.
02:43 If the reaches, they're crashing into them as tough.
02:47 Is there anything you can say?
02:48 Keep fighting.
02:49 I mean, we're not about to back down.
02:51 We just keep fighting.
02:52 We got the challenges.
02:53 But we're going to make excuses.
02:55 We're just going to keep on fighting, figure out a way
02:58 to-- I keep saying there's help coming.
03:02 And there will be to a certain extent.
03:04 But it's not here yet.
03:07 And so we're not a victim.
03:12 The situation is what it is.
03:14 We go out there and we battle every single possession.
03:17 And it felt like, in a lot of ways, St. John's is hungrier
03:20 than we were.
03:22 And they came in here and they wanted it.
03:24 And they played with that tenacity
03:28 that we probably didn't have that approach.
03:32 We were more of a finesse.
03:33 And they were more of a grit, grind.
03:38 They came up with every hard rebound, every 50-50 ball.
03:41 And with a possession by possession game like that,
03:46 you've got to have those extra possessions.
03:48 Josh, with everything you just kind of mentioned,
03:51 the 50-50s and the offense rebound,
03:55 the one possession with a minute, minute 32 left,
03:58 minute and a half, Kobe gets the rebound.
04:01 But he's falling out of bounds.
04:02 So he's got to try to tip it.
04:04 Ball kind of gets ping-ponged around.
04:07 And Alain ends up with the layup there.
04:10 It's a two-point game at that point.
04:11 That makes it four.
04:13 I mean, how big is that moment there?
04:15 I mean, that's not something you can really--
04:17 or you can't--
04:18 No, that's one that is what it is.
04:22 It came down to the defensive end, though.
04:24 We couldn't get a stop when we needed it.
04:26 And they set some really hard screens
04:31 that I didn't agree with whatsoever.
04:35 And they didn't call it.
04:37 So they had the advantage.
04:39 [VIDEO PLAYBACK]
04:43 As Coach Patino mentioned, he thought
04:48 they did a good job of running you off the three-point line.
04:51 Was it in your mindset game plan to attack them?
04:54 Was that something you saw?
04:55 Or is that just more the way the game played out?
04:58 Just the way the game played out, really.
05:00 They were up in the passing lane.
05:01 They were taking things away.
05:02 They were in us on catch.
05:05 And we all know we haven't shot the ball very well.
05:08 So I don't know that that was a huge factor.
05:10 JoJo knocked a couple down.
05:12 And that's going to be huge for his confidence.
05:15 But we were fighting to keep him on the floor
05:17 with some foul trouble, too.
05:18 So yeah, we need to get those guys going.
05:23 We need to get those shots to fall.
05:27 Everybody guards a heck of a lot better when shots are falling.
05:31 And the energy turns up on the defensive end.
05:34 And it's all snowball effect.
05:37 And we didn't get that effect.
05:39 Is this a critical moment or juncture
05:41 for Seth at this point?
05:43 No, I mean, I don't know where you're going with it.
05:49 I mean, he is what he is at this point.
05:53 And we're trying to get everything we can out of him.
05:55 And he's trying.
05:57 He's-- the effort's there.
06:00 But he's just in a slump.
06:04 And we got to get him out of it.
06:05 [BLANK_AUDIO]
06:08 >> Coach, thank you.
