00:00 Charles celebrates his 75th birthday and author Gareth Russell is here to break it all down.
00:04 "And I don't think it's coincidental that it was launched on his 75th birthday. I think that shows
00:09 you what he, the importance he attaches to it." Plus the royal family honors Queen Elizabeth
00:14 adoring Remembrance Day. Kylie Kelsey pays tribute to the people's princess, Eagle Style.
00:19 And the crown is set to return as the creator speaks out on the scene surrounding Diana's death.
00:25 We've got that plus so much more in today's Royally Us. Everyone and welcome to Royally Us.
00:30 I'm Christina and I'm so excited this week because we have a very special co-host and guest host. We
00:36 have Gareth Russell, our friend and royal author. Welcome Gareth. Thank you so much for joining.
00:41 Oh, you don't need to thank me, Christina. I'm so excited to do this.
00:44 Cannot wait. A few weeks away from your book, Campton Court coming out. Give us a quick teaser.
00:49 I know you're going to be in studio in a couple of weeks, so but give us a quick teaser before
00:52 we jump in. Yeah, I can't wait for that either. So my book, The Palace, is 500 years of history
00:57 from the Tudors to the Windsors through different people who have lived and loved and laughed
01:02 occasionally at Hampton Court. So it's done really well here in the UK and I'm excited to
01:07 bring it over to the States. Cannot wait. Cannot wait to talk more in depth about it. But for right
01:12 now, let's get into the comments from the viewers from last week. Let's start with Pam says, "I
01:16 think King Charles is doing a great job. I'm proud of all the royals doing what they are doing now,
01:21 and I think the Queen would be proud of them too. This, of course, does not include Harry. He's no
01:26 longer a royal. He just needs to grow up and move on." Seems to be the same sentiment we get week
01:30 after week, Gareth. That's interesting because that's not totally dissimilar to what Brits,
01:36 broadly speaking, not universally, but broadly speaking, are feeling as well.
01:40 Prince Charles, there's no excuse in 2023 for me to be left with zero excuse. The King,
01:48 his approval ratings are pretty solid. Certainly, I think there's not the sympathy for the Sussexes
01:55 that there maybe was two, three years ago. So that's tracking both sides of the Atlantic.
01:59 Yeah, definitely. All right. Well, let's get into our news of the week. And like we said,
02:02 King Charles is celebrating his 75th birthday, officially 75. He spent part of his 75th birthday
02:09 launching the Coronation Food Project. So his idea, the palace says, was to seek to bridge the
02:14 gap between food waste and food need. It will operate across the United Kingdom, helping people
02:18 and helping the planet. He and Queen Camilla spent part of the day visiting a surplus food
02:24 distribution center outside of London, and they met staff, volunteers, heard about ways food waste
02:29 can be used for social good. So it seems like he is well-celebrated. He also had a tea at Highgrove
02:35 during this big celebration last night. So tell me a little bit about that.
02:38 Yeah. So he, I mean, it was a busy day. He also had a reception to honor nurses and doctors and
02:44 midwives as well from our National Health Service here in the UK. So the Coronation Food Project is
02:49 really interesting because it's this line that Charles III is, this tightrope actually really
02:53 that he's walking between what is politics. Does politics start with a big P or a small P?
02:58 And for some people, many people, him intervening in issues of food surplus and food waste is
03:07 something that's very welcome. There are some people who criticize it and say that it's a
03:12 swipe at the conservative government here, that he's commenting on disparities in living standards.
03:18 But generally speaking, I think most people think tackling this is a positive thing.
03:24 So one of the things that he is really focusing in on, it's not just sort of social welfare and
03:30 that aspect of things, Christina, it's also there is an environmentalist component to this.
03:34 He is very concerned, and it is a building concern here in the UK, of just the sheer amount of food
03:40 that is thrown away and wasted. I don't know if you have the same issue there in America, but
03:45 recently, and this sounds so silly, but it really does add up, that supermarkets tend to buy only
03:53 vegetables that look aesthetically clean, like they don't want sort of wonky or oddly grown,
04:01 strange shaped vegetables. And that then means that tons upon tons are just not bought or not
04:05 sold. And so there's a lot that's really slipping through the cracks. And then we do have things
04:10 like food banks, and we have people not having access to fresh fruit and vegetables, or those
04:15 fresh fruit and vegetables come at an unacceptably high price. So broadly speaking, the Coronation
04:21 Food Project is very popular with a lot of people here in the UK, but also it is wetting the work
04:28 that the King did with the Prince's Trust, which is an extraordinary charity. I know King Charles
04:32 still has his critics, but that charity, that trust did phenomenal work. It's about to be
04:38 rebranded the King's Trust, which shows that he's going to be carrying it forward. So those kind of
04:42 social projects and the environmental projects are reaching a kind of perfect marriage here in
04:47 the Coronation Food Project. And I don't think it's coincidental that it was launched on his
04:52 75th birthday. I think that shows you what the importance he attaches to it.
04:55 Right. No, this is definitely something near and dear to his heart. And, you know,
05:01 obviously with the birthday, everybody's wondering if Prince Harry is going to be
05:04 making that phone call. I know the BBC said that he may be taking some time out of his day
05:09 to make a phone call, one would hope, but do you think that's a possibility?
05:12 Probably. I have to say I've been surprised. There's been a lot of sources close to the
05:19 Sussexes that have been leaking like sieves the last couple of weeks. Yes, I mean, I think maybe
05:26 that there is an element of trying. Now, what I will say for the Sussexes, excuse me, Sussexes,
05:32 every time, too many S's. With the Sussexes, I think there sometimes are people who claim
05:37 their sources and we don't know how close they actually are to the couple. But it's interesting
05:42 that this is coming after this, did they, didn't they receive an invitation to a party itself?
05:48 It does seem like there hasn't been a huge party for the King's 75th. As you said, there's been
05:53 this tea at probably his favourite home, Highgrove. But really, with the Coronation Food Project and
05:58 this reception I mentioned for our midwives and nurses in the National Health Service,
06:03 it doesn't seem like there would have been a really big event for Prince Harry to come over.
06:07 So maybe the phone call, this news of the phone call is the Duke letting people know that he is
06:13 still in touch with his father. Certainly, just to look back to what you said at the start, Christina,
06:18 I think there is a certain sense of frustration, to be a strong word, but some people would prefer
06:27 to see this family get back to a more harmonious relationship. So maybe that's part of it,
06:34 and who knows? I mean, I'm sort of a sentimental sucker. I sort of hope most families, if they can,
06:40 can spend the time together positively. So fingers crossed, fingers crossed,
06:44 the phone call does happen. I totally agree with you. We want to see a nice resolution,
06:48 especially around the holiday season. Let's all get together.
06:50 Well, it has been a busy week for the Royals because prior to King Charles's birthday,
06:57 Princess Kate and the Royal family honoured Queen Elizabeth II during Remembrance Day,
07:02 especially Princess Kate, because she stood on the balcony in London alongside Queen Camilla as they
07:07 both wore black coats, hats, and a poppy-label lapel pin. Kate rewore a Catherine Walker dress,
07:15 completed her look with a pair of pearl earrings that had clusters of diamonds around it,
07:19 and her earrings appeared to be repurposed from Elizabeth's diamond and pearl leaf brooch.
07:25 This was per Hello! magazine, and so it seems like she was definitely honouring Queen Elizabeth in
07:32 her fashion and jewellery choice. So what did you think of the Remembrance Day service? Obviously,
07:37 the senior members of the Royal family were there, as they usually are in tradition.
07:42 They are. It's a very important day for many people in the United Kingdom and across the
07:47 Commonwealth. Certainly, you know, my grandmother lost her brother in the Second World War. There's
07:52 a lot of families that were sort of at a generational stage, maybe, where that generation
07:58 who actually remembered it or experienced losses themselves are sadly passing away. So it is
08:04 passing to other generations, and the Royal family reflects that. Where Queen Camilla and the Princess
08:08 of Wales stood, that is where the senior female members of the Royal family have stood since the
08:13 first Remembrance Day service 103 years ago. So that's where we expect to see them. With regards
08:20 to the earrings, I had to do a little sort of truffling around of people who know more about
08:24 jewellery than I do. And what happened with a lot of Edwardian and Art Deco pieces was that the way
08:31 the brooches and tiaras, actually, interestingly, were put together is they're detachable.
08:35 So they kind of slot together like a jigsaw. So actually, there wouldn't have been any damage
08:40 done to the brooch as it was repurposed for the earrings. And those pieces could go back
08:44 into your brooch again. So it's sort of like a very, very fancy game of Tetris with these
08:51 jewellery pieces, apparently. So yes, it was it wasn't Elizabeth II piece that she was wearing.
08:56 The Queen had worn it to a state visit to South Korea, I believe, earlier in her reign. And we
09:02 also saw at the concert that happened the night before, we saw the Princess of Wales wearing a
09:08 three-strand pearl necklace. And that apparently is also Elizabeth II. Sam Cohen, who was Elizabeth
09:16 II's Assistant Private Secretary, has said those were the pearls that she regularly wore
09:20 on a day-to-day basis. So yes, there was a lot of nods to Elizabeth II.
09:25 At this first remembrance service, well, the first full year remembrance service,
09:31 with Charles III, there obviously was one in 2022. But this really felt like, I mean,
09:38 even in my head, it was the first one. It's not. There's an element to which this really feels like
09:43 the first full year step forward, if that makes sense. And as I said at the start, yes, I do think
09:48 there's a lot of families here that are confronting that that generation that Elizabeth II represented
09:54 and remembered the war has passed away. So I find it quite touching. And I like to see
10:00 the older generations being remembered by the younger.
10:02 >> All right, well, time to spill the royal tea. And what everybody's gonna be talking about over
10:06 the next few weeks is the crown because it is set to return. And Jonathan Price, who plays Prince
10:11 Philip, opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about what it was like watching back the scenes
10:15 surrounding Diana's death. He told the outlet, the cast and crew were watching and there were
10:19 a lot of tears and long silence when they stopped screening. In some ways seeing it, I thought
10:24 because of our reaction that we'd done it right, that there was a great emotional involvement in
10:31 it for everyone. Diana was such a precious memory for so many people all over the world.
10:35 I cried for real when she died and I cried when I saw it on screen. It's really extraordinary.
10:40 And according to creator Peter Morgan, those scenes wouldn't have happened at all if they
10:44 hadn't landed Elizabeth DeBecky for the roles. He said, to be honest, I was a little nervous
10:50 because I wanted to be convinced that somebody could play her. And it wasn't until I was absolutely
10:55 sure that we'd gotten Elizabeth DeBecky that I felt, I thought if we didn't get her, I'd have
11:00 to find a way to almost write around it. I'm sure this is the scenes that everybody's going to be
11:05 talking about. They said that in previous interviews that they've tried to handle this
11:10 as delicately as possible. How do you feel about the crown taking on this part in history?
11:15 I don't know, to be totally honest, I have mixed thoughts. So what I will say is I completely and
11:20 totally agree with Peter Morgan about Elizabeth DeBecky. I think it's one of the most extraordinary
11:25 performances. I think it is human. It's a performance, not an impersonation. She is a
11:32 phenomenal portrayal of Diana, Princess of Wales. But regardless of how Peter Morgan or Jonathan
11:41 Price feel, and there's no reason to doubt that they're being very sincere in what they say,
11:45 I think you would have to be fairly obtuse to imagine that there will be many, many people
11:52 who don't care how tastefully you did it. They just don't think this should be done at all.
11:56 And we've had discussions about this. You know, there were discussions when Meryl Streep played
12:01 the Iron Lady, was it necessary to show Thatcher's battle with dementia? There have also been
12:06 criticisms of the crown before. Were there things that were misrepresented? Or were there scenes
12:12 that didn't need to be included in it because you're dramatizing people who were alive or have
12:17 immediate family who are still alive? You know, I'm thinking the first time that this kind of
12:22 really raised its head was way back in season two. I don't know if you remember, but there were some
12:26 people who really questioned the taste of showing Prince Philip in a dream wandering through the
12:32 airplane crash site where he saw all his dead relatives. And so I think that there will be
12:40 this discussion. We've had it with things like Bombshell and The Loudest Voice. There will always
12:45 be questions. The assassination of Gianni Versace. There will be questions about what is tasteful,
12:50 what is the tradeoff between entertainment and the morality behind depicting the bereavements of
12:57 the still living. So there's no way they're going to dodge a controversy with this,
13:02 Christina. It's just not going to happen. All right. Rounding out our royalty section,
13:07 Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are feeling more refreshed than ever after a bumpy year,
13:10 a source exclusively told Us Weekly. They said that they got their bearings back and are focused
13:15 and recharged and ready to get back out there again. And that after laying low, it kind of
13:20 really paid off for them, according to a source, that the negative response to Harry and Meghan's
13:24 Spotify exit combined with bad press surrounding their near catastrophic car chase. And, you know,
13:32 it led to a rough few months for the royals, but they are back to focusing on their business
13:38 ventures and things like that. And it seems like, I mean, based on what we saw earlier this week
13:44 from them, like meeting with, you know, celebrating Remembrance Day, it seems like maybe that they
13:49 are taking a step in the right direction. Yeah, fingers crossed. I always think public opinion
13:54 is such a fickle, fascinating thing. And I don't really ever think of anyone as out just because
13:59 they're dying, if that makes sense. And I think, yeah, the Sussexes have had, PR wise, not a great
14:04 run in the last few months. And quite a bit of that has been of their own making. Certainly they
14:10 do have, as I mentioned, very strident critics. But after a while, it does have to be the
14:15 responsibility of your own actions, I think. And so I would say that the Sussexes pivoting
14:21 to something that's a slightly different approach is sensible. And also regrouping, look, whatever
14:27 you think of the Spotify decision and whether that was justified or not, for them, I imagine
14:31 it has to be a difficult blow to take. So, yeah, you know, take your time, relax and pivot into
14:38 something new. And that's what I hope and think they're doing. And everyone loves a redemption
14:43 story. So let's see what happens. All right. Well, let's round this out. Let's finish this
14:47 off with our Royal History Moment of the Week with a fun story. So Kylie Kelsey, of course,
14:51 has been in the news a lot over here. She is married to, of course, football player Jason
14:56 Kelsey, and she channeled her inner Princess Diana for the official Instagram account of the
15:01 Philadelphia Eagles. They shared photos of Kylie rocking a vintage jacket inspired by the late
15:07 Princess of Wales. The famous jacket was first worn by Diana in 1991 when she was taking Prince
15:12 William to school. She reportedly got the jacket from Jack Edelstein, the Eagles' former statistician,
15:19 and he was family friends with the Princess Grace of Monaco. And he met Diana at Grace's
15:24 funeral in 1982. In an October interview with ESPN, Maureen Schneider, who is the granddaughter of the
15:31 former Eagles owner, Leonard Toews, explained while having a conversation with Princess Diana,
15:36 Edelstein discovered that she knew nothing about American football, but that she did love the
15:40 colors green and silver. I love this story. It's just a fun story. It is a fun story. I also really
15:46 empathize with it because I spent Thanksgiving in Mississippi and Tennessee and I know nothing
15:51 about American football. So you can imagine how indescribably stupid I looked midway through
15:56 Thanksgiving. People were very patient, but it's not. I mean, American football is not
16:01 generally this nation's cup of tea. And so I kind of admire Princess Diana for saying, "Look,
16:06 I love the colors. I have no idea about the game." And it's also a really interesting little
16:12 one of those little moments history likes to throw up every now and then of the fact that this
16:16 jacket has a connection between Princess Grace and Princess Diana, two of the most photographed
16:21 and celebrated princesses of the 20th century. So yeah, I love that story. And also, I think it
16:26 reminds you of Diana's sense of fun and style and presence that she really had. And yeah,
16:33 those photographs of her, I think she was taking Prince William to school at Pembridge Square at
16:36 the time, at his school at Pembridge Square in London. And there's just, there is an ease and
16:42 a joyfulness to Diana sometimes in those photographs. And I think sometimes in the
16:46 shadow of just the tragedy that came later, we can forget that.
16:48 Yeah. 30 years later, 30 plus years later, we're still talking about this jacket and still talking
16:54 about her style. I mean, the mark that she left is undeniable. It really is. Well, Gareth, this
16:59 was so much fun. Thank you so much for guest hosting. I'm so excited because in a couple of
17:04 weeks, you're going to be right on this couch right next to me. And we're going to be talking
17:07 all about your book, Hampton Court. You can all pre-order it right now. So thank you so much for
17:12 taking the time and being here with me today. No need, as I said, no need to thank me, Christina.
17:16 I can't wait to see you. All right. We'll see you guys soon. Everybody keep commenting,
17:21 keep subscribing, and we'll see you guys next week. Bye.
