00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're taking a look at 10 Big Changes in Super Mario RPG.
00:22 Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo
00:27 Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:32 Cutscenes
00:39 The inclusion of cutscenes is one of the first major changes you'll notice when booting
00:43 up Super Mario RPG.
00:45 Major story beats like your first encounter with Mallow and Geno's arrival are all beautifully
00:50 animated and rendered at 60 frames per second.
00:53 For as gorgeous as these cutscenes are, there is no voiceover for any of the characters,
00:58 not even sound effects.
01:05 The music does a lot of the heavy lifting, which can be a good or bad thing depending
01:09 on who you ask.
01:11 Most of the time, you'll be experiencing the story through the in-game cutscenes, just
01:15 as they were presented in the original.
01:25 Soundtrack
01:32 One of the best aspects of Super Mario RPG is the music composed by Yoko Shimomura, best
01:38 known today for her music in the Kingdom Hearts games.
01:41 Shimomura returns to score the remake once again, and the difference between the new
01:45 and old iterations is night and day.
01:54 The remake boasts a soundtrack made with a full orchestra, breathing new life into the
01:59 environments.
02:00 Of course, if you're a diehard fan of the original score Shimomura made back in 1996,
02:05 you can switch to that if you so desire.
02:13 Combat
02:21 For the most part, the core of Super Mario RPG's combat is the same as before.
02:26 Time your inputs just right to land more damage.
02:29 However, the remake has added two more layers to make landing these inputs feel more rewarding.
02:34 Nailing a perfectly timed input will not only deliver more damage to your target, it will
02:39 also create a shockwave to damage the rest of the enemy team.
02:42 On top of that, you will get a small portion of your gauge increased, eventually allowing
02:47 you to execute a devastating triple move.
02:56 Each combination of characters has their own triple move, so be sure to experiment and
03:00 know when to switch out party members.
03:08 Speaking of which, party switching.
03:17 In the original Super Mario RPG, players were forced to be more deliberate in their party
03:22 formation.
03:23 One miscalculation could spell disaster for you while fighting a boss like Smithy or Valentina.
03:29 The remake has made it a bit more forgiving by allowing you to swap out party members
03:34 mid-combat instead of restricting you to the overworld.
03:37 Not only that, your character's turn will not be skipped upon swapping, which most RPG's
03:42 usually count against you as a part of your turn.
03:53 Name Changes
04:01 Various characters have had their names changed in the remake.
04:04 Some name changes make sense given how certain characters have finally been given official
04:09 names since 1996.
04:11 Princess Toadstool is now Princess Peach, the commander Goomba in Bowser's army is
04:15 now Goomhilda, and Sparkies and Fireballs are now Lava Bubbles.
04:23 However, some characters have had name changes that seem just a tad weird.
04:30 Yari is the Japanese term for Spear, so why change Yadirovich's name to Speardovich?
04:37 We'll give them credit on some of the name changes, though, especially for certain moves
04:41 like Psycho being renamed to Thought Peak, as many of the new names like this one fit
04:47 their move's descriptions.
04:54 Breezy Mode
05:02 Another major feature Nintendo has mentioned in their marketing is the new Breezy Mode.
05:07 Through this mode, you will get to experience Super Mario RPG under a less stressful difficulty
05:12 setting.
05:13 This means you will get more XP from fights and enemies, and bosses will appear with less
05:17 HP than normal.
05:24 On top of that, executing timed inputs will be a lot easier, meaning you will be in and
05:29 out of fights rather quickly.
05:31 Of course, you don't have to play on this setting, it is merely optional.
05:41 Storage Box
05:47 A nifty addition to Super Mario RPG is the inclusion of a storage box.
05:52 We've all been down that road, you come across a super useful item, but cannot fit
05:56 it into your inventory or you've already exceeded the cap.
06:05 To help you save on coins, any items causing you to exceed your cap can be instantly transferred
06:10 to your storage box for later use.
06:12 This might come in handy if you're trying to scrounge up extra dough for better weapons
06:16 and armor, too.
06:21 Super Mario RPG's Travel
06:28 Navigating around the world in the original Super Mario RPG was a bit of a pain.
06:33 On top of having to travel across areas by foot, the overworld map was divided into sections,
06:39 so there was quite a bit of loading, quite a bit of backtracking, the whole nine yards.
06:51 The remake, however, loads in one big map and allows you to fast travel between regions.
06:56 Of course, fast travel won't be accessible every single second, but it does make it easier
07:01 to fulfill those tricky side quests.
07:08 Boss Rush Mode
07:17 If there are some boss fights you really, really love, then the addition of boss replays
07:21 might be exciting to you.
07:23 Yes, once you have defeated a boss for the first time, you will have the option of fighting
07:27 them once again later on.
07:29 Some of them come with newer and more powerful abilities, too.
07:38 There is a caveat emptor to all these fights, though.
07:42 You will not be able to fight them until you have cleared the main story.
07:46 So enjoy the ride before you go trying to take on Booster or Jinx again.
07:59 Post-Game Items
08:06 Once you have taken down Smithy and recovered the seven stars, there will be a handful of
08:11 new equipment to nab across the world.
08:14 If you want to beat all of the new versions of the bosses, this equipment will be vital
08:18 to your endeavor.
08:23 We're talking about equipment that can increase the frequency of your triple move and even
08:31 prevent death.
08:32 Make sure you grab these before you go charging into those post-game boss fights.
