As colder weather sets in and we return from holiday travel and gatherings to the office with colleagues, we also face the annual cold and flu season. To get us through this time of year, here are some effective ways to stay healthy and ready ourselves for the challenges of the cold and flu season. Do not underestimate the importance of hydration, rest, a full night's sleep, and reducing stress. Eat foods high in quercetin, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, like blueberries, citrus fruits, apples, broccoli, and raw onion. Get enough zinc to decrease the risk of developing viral infections. About 15% of the population has a zinc deficiency, increasing the risk of developing viral infections. Foods high in zinc include meat, shellfish, and legumes like chickpeas, lentils, and beans. If you feel yourself coming down with a cold, look for products with naturally occurring ingredients like manuka honey, and take zinc-based products as soon as symptoms appear. Consider homeopathic remedies like Zicam RapidMelts and Medicated Fruit Drops , which leverage zinc to help shorten colds. For a zinc-free alternative, explore Zicam Nasal Swabs , utilizing a plant-based homeopathic formula to reduce the duration of the common cold. Keeping allergies at bay is also important, as uncontrolled allergies trigger increased mucus production, fostering an environment ripe for viral and bacterial growth. Zicam's No-Drip Liquid Nasal Spray , a non-drowsy formulation, provides relief of allergy symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and sinus pressure. Check out zicam.com for more information.

00:00 Thanks for having me.
00:08 So a couple of things and these are some foundational basic things.
00:11 Number one, you want to make sure that you stay hydrated.
00:14 We're often running around and we forget to drink water.
00:17 Our bodies are 70% water.
00:19 We need to make sure we stay hydrated.
00:21 Number two is making sure that you get good quality sleep and by that I mean your body
00:27 going into REM sleep.
00:29 This can be accomplished by sleeping in a pitch black room and the reason REM sleep
00:34 is important is that's when our body starts to regenerate and repair itself.
00:39 And then the third thing is reducing stress levels.
00:42 When your stress levels are high, your immune system goes down and you're more prone to
00:47 developing infections.
00:49 Now in terms of foods, you want to go for foods that are high in quercetin and high
00:54 in zinc.
00:55 So quercetin is an antioxidant.
00:57 It has immune boosting properties.
00:59 It also reduces allergy symptoms and it can be found in raw onions, blueberries, and citrus
01:05 fruits as well as broccoli.
01:08 So there's a reason why we say eat your broccoli.
01:10 And then when it comes to zinc, we're talking about meats, shellfish, and legumes.
01:15 So things like lentils or chickpeas.
01:18 Now if you experience cold symptoms right at the first sign, my go-to is a non-medication,
01:24 a homeopathic remedy called Zycam.
01:27 It comes in the form of medicated fruit drops or rapid dissolve tablets that go underneath
01:32 your tongue when you take them right at the first signs of a cold.
01:35 Now if you're looking for a zinc-free alternative, you can try Zycam nasal swabs.
01:39 They're also plant-based.
01:41 And if you're experiencing allergy symptoms, you may want to opt for a no-drip liquid nasal
01:46 spray that's also available.
01:48 So if you need more information, check out Zycam.com or follow me, Dr. Tanya Elliott.
