Transcript
00:00:00 In the gun episode 127 of your new favorite WVU football podcast I'm Wesley Euler with
00:00:12 the best teammates in the business we've got the band reunited this week baby oh yeah the
00:00:16 signal caller Jed Drenning and fresh off a big win big oh the runaway beer truck down
00:00:24 the sideline big oh going to the state championship baby talk to me what's up Greenbrier West
00:00:32 we're going to the ship baby all that hard work has paid off right so man we got one
00:00:39 more week to focus up with these kids it's been a hell of a journey never won a championship
00:00:50 with any of the teams that I played on so this is kind of a neat little experience for
00:00:57 me and glad I got to be a part of it and you know I'm glad we got some good coachable kids
00:01:03 man it's a lot of fun and I'm excited to see how it all plays out there in Wheeling.
00:01:10 How many championships have you been to?
00:01:15 I haven't been to any.
00:01:17 I'm kind of I'm with you in the sense that I've never been on a team that was able to
00:01:23 finish the job.
00:01:25 Pop Warner lost two league championships high school lost two state championships college
00:01:31 lost the national championship game but always the bridesmaid so I'm pulling for you man
00:01:36 I was kind of hoping to be joining you up there I was on the tarmac in Temple Texas
00:01:41 and then on a bus watching the Tucker County semifinal game on my phone and I'll tell you
00:01:47 what it's gonna be a battle of the titans with Greenbrier and Williamstown because Green
00:01:51 was Williamstown we knew going in a whale of a football team but that's a clash of titans
00:01:56 guys that's West that's a battle.
00:01:59 Yeah Williamstown's a juggernaut they are they are and they have been for many years
00:02:03 as you guys know I got some family ties shout out Charles Wesley Godwin family ties to Williamstown
00:02:10 so I'm just gonna say this right now all right my family could disown me if they want I don't
00:02:16 care let's go Greenbrier West all right let's get I'm appreciate the sport I'm rooting for
00:02:21 big oh baby let's get it done is that is that Friday or Saturday it's Saturday 730 prime
00:02:28 time baby we've always done that way so when I were talking about it the other day even
00:02:34 back to when I was in school what they've always done the double a Friday night which
00:02:39 is what I was in back then the triple a Saturday afternoon which we typically would stay behind
00:02:46 and watch sure and then the single way Saturday night that's that's been that way for 30 some
00:02:51 odd years I believe well yeah save save the best for last right yep prime time television
00:02:57 baby 730 p.m. let's go I love it I love it well congrats to to big oh and all the Greenbrier
00:03:05 West boys on a big win let's go finish the job on Saturday night baby and get it done
00:03:11 against Williams time there in Wheeling great stuff big oh we're pumped for you and obviously
00:03:16 we'll make sure and keep everybody updated and follow up on that next week when you know
00:03:21 when big oh has got that ring on his finger I don't know why I just did a Boston accent
00:03:26 there for that randomly but we'll move on one of our familiar names a familiar face
00:03:33 of course former head coach headline segment here by the way brought to you by our friends
00:03:38 at bet online where the game starts Dana Holgerson is out at the University of Houston after
00:03:45 five seasons and Jed I don't think anybody you know on their on their bingo cards what
00:03:53 just a couple years ago when Dana was going ten and two and in the Mountaineers were struggling
00:03:58 you know at five and seven I don't think many people would have had Neil Brown outlasting
00:04:03 Dana Holgerson but here we are Dana and Houston parting ways the former WVU head coach no
00:04:11 longer with the Cougs yeah that's the case and I watched his postgame press conference
00:04:20 after the UCF game to see if there might have been some kind of indication and I'll be honest
00:04:24 with you as somebody spent a lot of time around Dana through the years I really don't think
00:04:30 there was at least at that juncture I don't know what the timeline might have been thereafter
00:04:34 but you know Tillman for Tita the billionaire who obviously is very hands on with Houston
00:04:42 athletics and even you know the the pro scene in Houston obviously this wouldn't happen
00:04:48 without him pulling the trigger and saying so and he's the guy that got Dana in there
00:04:52 so you know what Dana was talking about after the UCF loss was look the only upside to not
00:04:59 having a bowl is we can jump right in Monday to offseason preparation and 2024 for us starts
00:05:04 on Monday and and the next thing you know in the span of the next 24 to 48 hours the
00:05:09 news breaks and there is no Monday for Dana as the head coach at Houston but now the question
00:05:16 is what next well his buyout I think is in the ballpark of 14-15 million so Dana's gonna
00:05:21 be in no hurry to do anything I wouldn't imagine but he can kick back and kind of you know
00:05:26 enjoy his money for a while and relax and then pick and choose whatever come next comes
00:05:30 next for him but from a candidate standpoint there have been a lot of names tossed around
00:05:36 but Andy Staples did a terrific job of kind of reducing it down to probably the three
00:05:42 most likely names two of them are probably on everybody's list and I think all three
00:05:47 should be he talked about Jeff Traylor okay at Texas San Antonio he's with the Roadrunners
00:05:53 right now he's a former Texas high school coach he knows the Texas scene very well first
00:05:58 you would think that whoever Houston's going to bring in they have to be really dialed
00:06:02 in and really connected to Texas high school football with relationships I mean you saw
00:06:07 the model that that Texas Tech you know followed with Joey Maguire maybe it's something like
00:06:12 that but but Jeff Traylor would would kind of sort of fit that role Willie Fritz at Tulane
00:06:19 you know not only has he succeeded everywhere he's been from Tulane to Georgia Southern
00:06:23 but he also spent some time at Sam Houston State so he understands he you know he even
00:06:29 had took a couple of Sam Houston teams to national championship games so he understands
00:06:35 the inner workings of the Texas high school recruiting game and then the third one I thought
00:06:39 this was interesting but on some level it might even be obvious why not Gary Patterson
00:06:45 if anybody knows how to build a program in the state of Texas it has to be Gary Patterson
00:06:51 he recruited that landscape for two decades so you know what he would have to do and this
00:06:57 is something Andy Staples did a great job of pointing out he would have to have granted
00:07:01 an interview explain how he can connect with the modern player in the age of the portal
00:07:06 and NIL because that was kind of his undoing to some extent he he failed to manage this
00:07:12 brand new landscape of college football 2.0 that we talked so much about and that's what
00:07:17 led to the guy with the statue outside the stadium in Fort Worth getting fired so those
00:07:23 are the three names that have come up in addition to some others but but I think Andy Staples
00:07:28 makes a lot of good sense and I can see any of the three of those guys jumping in there
00:07:32 and making the most of the opportunities with what Houston's investing in facilities they
00:07:37 have to get their NIL situation right which don't we all but that's kind of what you're
00:07:42 looking at is they as they transition into I guess we're calling it power for now since
00:07:48 the the Pac-12 is officially behind us so interesting in developments in terms of what
00:07:55 Houston may do yeah without a doubt they got some money to throw around there for sure
00:08:00 so that's another one that we will be keeping an eye on Jeff Levy to Michigan State of course
00:08:05 the Oklahoma coordinator or sorry yes Mississippi State part of me obviously Mike Leach passing
00:08:13 away a little over a year ago now why did my zoom just give the thumbs up I don't want
00:08:17 to give the thumbs up with Mike Leach passing away get out of here zoom Mike Leach a little
00:08:24 over a year ago we all remember that sad story and in that sad moment well now Mississippi
00:08:29 State making a long-term move here they go and get Jeff Levy he was most recently obviously
00:08:34 offensive coordinator at Oklahoma and obviously we saw how that offense was able to perform
00:08:41 out the course of this season so listen there's been some good coaches that have gone to Mississippi
00:08:46 State and done all right and we'll see if if Levy can kind of be the next one it's it's
00:08:52 a it's a tough gig there right just the division they play in the conference that they play
00:08:57 in where old miss is at right now I think is one of those that's always a big kind of
00:09:02 comparing yourself to your your in-state rival type of program but Jeff Levy gonna be the
00:09:08 next one to take the reins there for the Bulldogs I think the powers that be and Starkville
00:09:13 liked where that was going with Mike Leach from an offensive standpoint they enjoyed
00:09:17 the excitement around an explosive offense and the the the hire that they made in replacement
00:09:24 of Mike Leach I'm not sure that was done under ideal circumstances that's why it lasted it
00:09:29 was so short-lived it only lasted you know about a year but Jeff Levy stepping in should
00:09:34 give them that injection of offense again he succeeded just about everywhere he's been
00:09:38 with every offense he's coached and it's just so strange to me it was a short month and
00:09:43 a half ago that the fans in Oklahoma were complaining about Jeff Levy in the Oklahoma
00:09:48 offense and the next thing you know he's dropping 50 and 60 and almost 70 on everybody in the
00:09:53 Big 12 down the stretch to the point that he gets his own job in the SEC but yeah that's
00:09:59 that's a good point on your part Wes that the barometer is to some extent Ole Miss because
00:10:04 there have been guys step in there and have some success whether it was Leach whether
00:10:07 it was Dan Mullen but but the sustainability piece has always been the challenge and with
00:10:11 what you're up against in that division of that conference from a resources standpoint
00:10:16 it's it's all about when you're looking at a job you always ask yourself do the resources
00:10:21 match the expectations right okay how reasonable are the expectations of the fans of the administration
00:10:29 am I expected to beat a bunch of teams with more money and more resources than me and
00:10:34 like the Texas a and m state like the Texas a and m thing right like their expectations
00:10:37 are through the roof but so are their resources exactly and Mississippi States yeah they have
00:10:43 expectations of course they do but not to this ridiculous extent of the Auburn's or
00:10:49 the a and m's of the world right so that's a consideration when coaches look at these
00:10:54 jobs look where are the expectations or how many teams that have more resources and money
00:10:59 than me are you expecting me just to show up and consistently beat and maybe that's
00:11:04 not necessarily the case in Mississippi State but they want a competitive team in the SEC
00:11:08 West so he's gonna have to step in there and fight like a dog to score and score right
00:11:12 away and and win some football games in a tough division but yeah interesting hired
00:11:17 he he earned it you know if anybody was had a central role to the second year turnaround
00:11:23 for Oklahoma under Brent Venables yeah the defense has really stopped the bleeding and
00:11:27 stopped the hemorrhaging but this Oklahoma offense with Dylan Gabriel they've really
00:11:31 got humming and put Oklahoma in a pretty good spot now they absolutely have I think he was
00:11:38 one of the you know one of the more regarded offensive coordinators across the country
00:11:42 if you will now he's gonna get an opportunity to to lead a program there and he'll get to
00:11:47 see his his Oklahoma Sooners before much longer as well to join in him in the SEC there finally
00:11:54 last coaching carousel thing to talk about here you know we talked about Dana former
00:11:59 Mountaineer connection another one former Mountaineer quarterback Clint Trickett out
00:12:04 as at the offense as the offensive coordinator at Marshall I should say after things didn't
00:12:10 things didn't quite go the way they expected down in Huntington this year it's kind of
00:12:14 a tale of two seasons you know and I shot Clint a text a couple days ago after this
00:12:19 played out this this is guys why I was telling you off the air I hate this time of year because
00:12:24 so many of my friends are coaches across the country and yeah the head coaches might be
00:12:29 millionaires but these guys aren't so there's a lot of these assistants that are impacted
00:12:34 and and it was four assistant coaches at Marshall including Clint including Billy Legless, Wes
00:12:39 Regineatize obviously but but you know I mean think about it it wasn't that long ago that
00:12:44 they were marching into South Bend and knocking off a ranked Notre Dame team I remember shooting
00:12:49 Clint Tex after that game and what a big you know feather in his cap that was but this
00:12:54 year they started off four and oh seemed like they had things humming they marched down
00:12:57 to NC State you know they it was a handful for Gibby and Gibby's defense with the Wolfpack
00:13:04 you know Clint really dialed it up dialed up a good game plan and and after that shootout
00:13:08 loss they're sitting there at four and one but then they had some key injuries they couldn't
00:13:12 stay healthy and then he went on a skid the next thing you know they're turning the ball
00:13:15 over and they can't move the chains on third down and it kind of snowballed as these things
00:13:20 often do and and the next thing you know I think a coach with a very bright future is
00:13:25 is now looking for work again and Clint Trickett but you know that's a that's the nature of
00:13:31 this this business sometimes but hate to say it but I have no doubt that Clint's gonna
00:13:36 land on his feet yeah Clint's talented and and he's definitely gonna get another opportunity
00:13:42 he said he's off and he's gonna shoot a big buck in Pocahontas County this week so that's
00:13:48 the luck that's the way he thinks you know that's it hey sometimes you just gotta unplug
00:13:53 for a little bit go shoot go shoot something make yourself feel a little bit better and
00:13:57 we do obviously wish all the best to Clint hopefully he does land on his feet and hey
00:14:02 maybe uh maybe there's a potential reunion spot for him to be found somewhere in Morgantown
00:14:06 one of these days that'll do it for our headline segment now of course it is time to talk you
00:14:12 know we we've had our stuffing and our mashed potatoes and our green bean casserole right
00:14:17 but now it's time to get to the turkey of course and that is West Virginia's dramatic
00:14:23 to say the least victory over the Baylor Bears 34 to 31 down in Waco another last minute
00:14:31 go ahead touchdown in Texas this time the Mountaineers finishing the job getting it
00:14:37 done gentlemen I mean there is so much to get into there's the tale of two halves right
00:14:43 from from an offensive standpoint of moving the ball at will in the first half and then
00:14:47 really struggling to do so until you needed to there's I think kind of a similar thing
00:14:52 with the defense putting the clamps down in the first half and then Baylor adjusting and
00:14:57 finding their way in the second half we're going to talk about Zach Frazier and just
00:15:01 an incredible way for him to go out at some point but Jed I like I keep coming back I
00:15:08 don't know what it is but I've been thinking about this all day you remember last year
00:15:13 okay in the in the early days of this podcast and uh the first game of course that the three
00:15:19 of us get to break down was that heartbreaking loss to to pit in the renewal of the backyard
00:15:23 brawl and I remembered you gave us a stat this has been sticking with me the whole day
00:15:28 you said I went back and looked and I don't remember if it was over the last five years
00:15:33 or the last season in college football whatever it was but 83 percent of the time you told
00:15:38 us when a team blocks a punt they win the football game right and again I don't remember
00:15:44 if I don't remember if that was the previous season if that was a five-year sample size
00:15:48 whatever it was but you had a statistic that when a team number in that ballpark yeah when
00:15:53 a team blocks a punt 82 83 percent of the time they win the football game and you know
00:15:59 wvu blocked a punt in that game ended up losing when we were kind of going through some of
00:16:02 the different statistical anomalies of that game at this point what 16 months ago when
00:16:08 we when we were having that breakdown I wonder gentlemen how many times a team has given
00:16:15 up to not one to kick return touchdowns and gone on to win I mean it's got to be less
00:16:22 than 10 percent of the time it's got to be minuscule I don't know about you guys I've
00:16:27 never seen a team take back to back kickoffs to the house but I've certainly never seen
00:16:32 a team cake take back to back kickoffs to the house and still lose the game in a in
00:16:36 a crazy night for whatever reason that still stands out to me you gave up to back to back
00:16:41 special teams touchdowns and still found a way to win the game precipitated West a lot
00:16:47 of conversations during the game after the game I mean we were even in the press room
00:16:53 and and Greg Hunter and I were talking and Greg was saying Jed I were from what I could
00:16:57 research looking things up on the fly he said I think it was a list of 12 guys in the history
00:17:03 of college football had two touchdowns and on kickoff returns one game in the history
00:17:07 of college it feels in the history of college football and then Antonik John Antonik texted
00:17:12 me during the game I think he might have even tweeted this as far as we could tell the only
00:17:18 other time that had happened in the history of West Virginia football if you have a twin
00:17:23 to West Virginia historian in you you know this game 1904 Michigan 130 to nothing okay
00:17:30 if you know anything about the old days the early days of Mountaineer football that was
00:17:34 a Michigan team that picked on everybody go back and look at some of those scores from
00:17:38 his Michigan team 130 nothing now that's back when the rules were different touchdowns were
00:17:42 of different value a lot of times you scored you got the ball back it was crazy so the
00:17:48 only other time that we could find we in that case John that that it had happened was then
00:17:55 so if it feels like you've never seen it that's probably because you haven't I mean Greg's
00:17:59 list had 12 guys that had ever done it okay and John's telling me West Virginia hadn't
00:18:03 seen it happen since 1904 basically it was a fundamentally different type of game so
00:18:10 yeah you're putting yourself more than behind the eight ball but I will say this too and
00:18:16 these are the conversations that you know I like talking quarterback stuff with Garrett
00:18:20 you know we geek out about the position kind of conversations and the quarterback in me
00:18:26 I want I would always do this anytime there was a special teams touchdown anytime or if
00:18:32 there was a defensive touchdown even you know if you know I was stupid enough to throw a
00:18:38 pick and they return it for a touchdown or if there was a fumble and a scoop and scored
00:18:41 anytime there was a touchdown there was a sudden change touchdown okay my immediate
00:18:46 thought my immediate thought especially in the circumstance of that game the second quarter
00:18:50 when that was happening we were dominating that game their defense couldn't get off the
00:18:55 field we were unstoppable offensively and I looked at Garrett and I said now you know
00:19:00 what you get to say you get a point at their defense and say hey guys right back out here
00:19:04 buddy no break for you let's go no blow for you at all right back out here and that is
00:19:09 the greatest feeling for a quarterback you're like hey if ever there's a chance to lift
00:19:12 my team up that defense was already sagging at the end of that last long drive and now
00:19:18 they're thinking they get over there they get a regroup okay they get to take a Gatorade
00:19:21 shot hey that fire's still burning back out here buddy and that happened twice in the
00:19:26 same quarter the back out here buddy moment so maybe it's just weird that the quarterback
00:19:31 in me sees that as an opportunity because I see it as a chance to lift my team up hey
00:19:36 they need us now and we're really going to go lean on this defense even more than we
00:19:40 already were but you are making life difficult to the extreme to the extreme and the there
00:19:48 were so many different moving parts about this it's almost like I remember to get way
00:19:53 out in the weeds here briefly I remember the 1991 league championship series with the pirates
00:20:01 and the Braves how that ended with the Sid Bream scoring from second you are way out
00:20:05 the way well I'm going to tell you why I'm saying it okay Francisco Cabrera singles you
00:20:12 know offstand Belinda Barry Bonds tries to throw Bream out at the plate well you know
00:20:18 Giddy and Chris George and I are sitting you know my place in in in Glenville just our
00:20:23 hearts are breaking we collapse the floor and I remember the next year the Elias sports
00:20:29 analysis the baseball Elias analyst book that came out each year was just you know
00:20:33 it was a stat guys geeky dream right well they picked one thing that happened each previous
00:20:39 season and broke it down statistically and they talked about all the unlikely parts of
00:20:43 that play like you know career-wise Francisco Cabrera was one for five against Sam Belinda
00:20:49 with one home run Sid Bream was dead last among all National League runners in scoring
00:20:53 on singles from second base Barry Bonds was number one and stopping guys from scoring
00:20:58 so all these unlikely things and all I could think was the guy who did this to us returned
00:21:05 seven kickoffs total all year he touched the football on a kickoff return seven times all
00:21:13 year he wasn't even their regular guy and he ends up what he had like a 21 yard average
00:21:19 coming into the game on a poultry seven returns he's the guy who does that and I also couldn't
00:21:25 help but think earlier in the year when the ball had a little more give to it you guys
00:21:30 may or may not have noticed these kickers Michael Hayes and beyond for West Virginia
00:21:35 they were doing a better job of banging these things through the end zone or in the end
00:21:39 zone but later in the season as the temperature drops the ball gets a little stiffer it's
00:21:43 tougher to do that so now as you approach you know November football there's going to
00:21:48 be more kick returns because you're not driving it into the end zone with a flexible ball
00:21:52 so I'm thinking that dude doesn't do that to us but it's October but now since it's
00:21:57 late November here we go a stiffer ball he's going to get his chances and now we have one
00:22:02 kicker and ten chances to shed blocks and we don't do it we don't do it not once but
00:22:08 I remember coach Wallace saying on the broadcast he literally said on the broadcast after Richard
00:22:14 Reese's first kickoff return he's like hey guys here are the problems you didn't shed
00:22:18 those blocks you created lanes and if you don't fix that issue it's going to happen
00:22:23 again you don't think you'll do it again he'll do it again and it just dawned on me when
00:22:27 Dwight said that yeah that is possible it could happen again you've just never seen
00:22:31 it happen again and wouldn't you know it just a short few minutes later it happens again
00:22:35 it was almost like you couldn't believe what you were watching I mean it was one of the
00:22:40 most bizarre things I've ever seen on a football field.
00:22:43 Yeah and with somebody who you know I made my career kind of last in the NFL playing
00:22:49 special teams and I'm coaching special teams now in high school you know it almost seemed
00:22:56 like it was the same it was the same play both times honestly and just you know you
00:23:03 wonder how that happens because in my opinion you should never get blocked on a kickoff
00:23:11 should never get blocked there's just there's too many odds against the return team you
00:23:17 know I mean you have more of an advantage they're basically backpedaling you're running
00:23:22 you're running downhill yeah yeah you know I'm saying you already have a head start it's
00:23:26 just like so when it does happen I feel like guys may be being overaggressive trying to
00:23:33 take on blocks when they really should be kind of seeing where the runner is and taking
00:23:37 a shot I'd say like my biggest theory on kickoff is like look I got two guys that are my screamers
00:23:47 they basically just run down there and take shots on the returner and most of the time
00:23:52 you know they might make the play but most of the time what that gets what happens is
00:23:57 the returner has to slow down or make a move right so he can't have that full head of steam
00:24:03 because what ends up happening is once that runner gets to top speed it doesn't take much
00:24:09 for him to hit a seam and go and if you kind of watch like what happened during the game
00:24:15 that's kind of like what happened we got we got sucked in and pinned and that guy kicked
00:24:20 it out basically and hit a seam up the hash both times I mean he was moving when you did
00:24:27 this where did you typically play in other words for those listening or those watching
00:24:30 oftentimes the way kickoff coverage breaks down you have the kicker in the middle so
00:24:34 you have five coverage defenders to your left five to the right typically that's numbered
00:24:38 l1 through l5 and r1 through r5 and Owen's talking about the screamers I mean I would
00:24:43 imagine that's your l5 and your r5 your screamers right yeah they called yeah back in the day
00:24:48 they called us wedge busters because you were able to create yeah the human wall where you
00:24:56 could at least lock arms it's illegal now but uh it was like the it was like the you
00:25:04 had to be kind of crazy to I mean that's where they put you you know I mean you were the
00:25:09 guy who ran down there as fast as you could and took on an 8,000 pound man wall and just
00:25:15 tried to blow the wedge up I mean you that's that's in the name wedge buster but now since
00:25:22 that stuff's kind of taken away it gives a little more advantage to the kickoff team
00:25:26 but that's what I was saying like my theory behind it is kind of you still have those
00:25:30 wedge busters but there's no wedge to bust anymore so they go down and they just take
00:25:35 shots and try to get the guy moving you know I mean laterally versus down yeah yeah because
00:25:42 once he has to move laterally he's slowed down then you can really that umbrella starts
00:25:47 to tighten up yeah um and and you can cage him up but it just you know like I said it
00:25:53 seemed like we kind of got pinned and it looked like it was like the three on the left side
00:25:57 both times uh he just got sucked in and you know like I said if you don't make that guy
00:26:04 go you know left or right once he hits top speed north and south it's tough to catch
00:26:10 a guy because you know you're running opposite ways yeah what kickoff coaches always talk
00:26:15 about is indecision is your best friend because if you can create indecision that's what I
00:26:21 was talking about you can create indecision in from the return man any kind of indecision
00:26:26 is going to give you a chance to rally to the football and converge on that and it's
00:26:30 very obviously I've never done it unless you want to count you know kickoff return safety
00:26:35 in high school which I don't count at all right and oh by the way I am zero surprised
00:26:41 that you were a wedge buster I had zero I would have I would have I would have bet I
00:26:47 would have bet the mortgage that that that was owens role yeah I mean like when you when
00:26:51 you travel in football circles and you talk about like old school like going said that's
00:26:55 illegal now because there were so many injuries and that but there was a certain type of person
00:26:59 back in the days of the wedge that you expected on your roster as the wedge buster and Owen
00:27:04 schmitz that guy just is the just just say just say the psycho who loved breaking face
00:27:11 masks right I mean that was ours ours in high school was it was it was a farm boy named
00:27:16 Kevin and he just I mean he relished the wedge buster role he loved it he loved quick so
00:27:22 quick side story on on the wedge buster so Dan Moses is playing for Minnesota I'm playing
00:27:28 for Seattle it's my rookie season we're playing in Minnesota so I had like 50 60 people from
00:27:36 my hometown came to the game right it's preseason game but it's the first game and right I'm
00:27:42 our five David Hawthorne was the l5 on the other side of the ball he played for TCU he
00:27:47 was a hell of a linebacker special teams absolute psychopath which you know gave him notoriety
00:27:55 which he ended up evolving into his linebacker position which that's what he played but so
00:28:02 you know opening kickoff and they have a three man wedge gone so you know roughly a 900 pound
00:28:07 wall probably you know probably more closer to a thousand pound wall each one of them
00:28:11 linemen were over 300 pounds so I go down there and man I pick my guy out and I smoke
00:28:18 him right underneath the chin and I'm telling you what I put this this guy was 315 maybe
00:28:22 320 you know I mean put him on his arse right put him on his arse you know get a get a shoestring
00:28:30 in there you know I get an assist the next the next the and I mean I rocked him dude
00:28:39 I was jacked up okay I was jacked up okay first play I'm like I'm hyped gotta see Dan
00:28:45 over there I'm like oh and so next kickoff did they were ready they were ready and all
00:28:54 three of them hit me and the first thing that hit the ground was back in my head oh I mean
00:29:00 they I mean it was like I was on skates man how do we find this video there's got to be
00:29:08 some athletic director that has this on a VHS in there in their in their office right
00:29:13 yeah this would have to be back but in Seattle oh eight or something you know I mean you're
00:29:18 saying Seattle equipment equipment guy yeah well it would have been I was playing for
00:29:23 Seattle so it would have been there it's probably it might be in their archives if they even
00:29:27 keep stuff up wait actually you know what I'm trying you said 2008 yeah like man you
00:29:35 get like like the like the NFL all 22 pass goes back years I'll have to I'll have to
00:29:42 look up stuff like that oh but yeah you guys know I do I do the show with with Arthur Motes
00:29:48 who was a linebacker in the NFL for nine years right played for the Bills right dealers and
00:29:53 and he pulls up like he's got the all 22 pass in the NFL plus access and all that so he's
00:29:58 got all the film he pulls up highlights from like 2010 when he was with a rookie with the
00:30:03 Bills all the time so I want it goes if it goes back another year or two I'll have to
00:30:08 I'll have to ask him this week big I'll be like hey how far how far back does this go
00:30:12 can you find me the Seahawks Vikings game from 2008 why should have your offseason episode
00:30:18 list I do actually and it's right here it's right if you're watching listen if you're
00:30:24 watching on YouTube first of all my Avon Coburn jersey that I have repurposed as a Jeheme
00:30:28 white jersey please note also if you look here at the list from last year's offseason
00:30:34 topics what does it say right there fellas I know I know my I know my handwriting's
00:30:38 bad so I'm kind of putting you on the spot but it says my only wedge buster story because
00:30:46 I very obviously wasn't one or there would have been big problems I was I was whatever
00:30:52 the opposite of that would be but when I played arena ball we won an exhibition tour of Spain
00:30:58 the arena league did I played for the New York Firebirds we spent a month in Spain touring
00:31:02 three cities to play against the Milwaukee Mustangs and what we did was we hit Zaragoza
00:31:08 in northern Spain Granada in southern Spain then we wrapped up the tour in Madrid and
00:31:14 what they did the last week of the tour they each each team signed one Spanish native that
00:31:21 played in their their leagues over there okay and what they were going to do was they had
00:31:26 to find a position for them on our team and they were like for a couple days the biggest
00:31:31 celebrities in all of Spain like we're in the team hotel in Madrid and guys were like
00:31:35 we didn't meet these guys yet like Antonio was going to be on the team he's going to
00:31:39 meet us tomorrow morning for practice the game was Saturday he was going to start practicing
00:31:43 Wednesday okay so the Spanish version of the David Letterman show their national late night
00:31:49 talk show both these guys were the celebrity guests on that show so we're all in the hotel
00:31:53 watching it we're like hey they're gonna be the team meeting in the morning so oh and
00:31:57 guess what they did with this poor dude they made him the wedge buster on the kickoff
00:32:01 team so he comes out there we're playing in these indoor bike arenas that seat 20,000
00:32:07 people right so it's kind of this nutty environment anywhere for the arena league so he comes
00:32:13 out on the field to start the game we're about to kick off and of course the arena league
00:32:16 you're kicking off and it's going off the net and all this crazy nonsense and uh if
00:32:20 you truly can have a wedge buster he's leading the charge so he comes out on the field and
00:32:26 of course it's 20,000 Spaniards in the stand so they went berserk they blew the the roof
00:32:31 off this place cheering for him and the balls kicked off and he went down there and got
00:32:36 decimated yeah he was like 195 pounds he got destroyed we're all like oh man he barely
00:32:44 got up from that thing but that's my wedge buster story there's a lot of carnage fantastic
00:32:51 there's a lot of carnage there there's certainly a lot of carnage well gentlemen it is it's
00:32:59 funny how we can laugh about it now i mean if if we end up losing that game we won so
00:33:03 yes yeah we're sitting here pulling i mean that's the fine lines of of victory and defeat
00:33:08 right we're pulling our hair out about those back-to-back touchdowns and we're hearkening
00:33:12 back to you know it was a kick return in houston that really started to swing the momentum
00:33:16 in that game as well there were a lot of things about that game that reminded me of the coogs
00:33:20 game in a weird way uh but fortunately everybody kept their helmets on after we scored the
00:33:26 go-ahead touchdown this time did you see garrett after the game winning touchdown i i first
00:33:33 of all i was the idiot in the side off my phone and and you know video and the touchdown
00:33:37 from beginning to end and he literally runs up the sidelines out of the end zone with
00:33:41 his hands in the air like i'm not doing nothing i'm not doing nothing yeah he literally did
00:33:44 it he's he was talking he was talking a little trash to some baylor fans behind the bench
00:33:48 though they showed that well they had trust me they had a comment because here's the other
00:33:51 thing i i was fearful going into that game that look the rain starting early it wasn't
00:33:58 supposed to start till later it was nasty this is going to be an absolute pit style
00:34:02 ghost town okay uh you know it wasn't a large crowd but it was not a ghost town all the
00:34:09 students were there right behind the damn bench all of them i mean that student section
00:34:14 was packed and there was enough of a crowd in the stadium again it was sporadic i'm sure
00:34:20 if you were watching on tv it was far less than impressive but it was one of those deals
00:34:24 guys that it seemed like you know how we always say at mountain airfield if it's the right
00:34:28 30 000 the right 40 000 it's noisy the people who were there were engaged they were engaged
00:34:33 it got noisy those third downs were noisy and i kept thinking look it's raining it's
00:34:38 miserable at least when we have the ball it is but why can't it rain enough to get you
00:34:42 people out of here i almost want to ghost town i went from thinking we were gonna have
00:34:46 to create our own energy and that kind of scary environment because it's so flat to
00:34:50 thinking man these guys are loud on third down but so that's the other complaint i would
00:34:55 have the rain started early and then i swear it was like they were hitting a button they
00:34:59 were bringing the dome up every time they got the ball every time they were kicking
00:35:03 the rain completely stopped every time in the first half every time we got the ball
00:35:06 every time michael hayes was kicking it was raining sideways so anyway we persevered we
00:35:13 overcame that we overcame everything that all the shortcomings of the third quarter
00:35:17 into the early four fourth quarter we overcame all that okay all that and much like an alabama
00:35:25 team facing auburn who last week got beat by three touchdowns by new mexico state they
00:35:30 dug down deep they found the fourth and goal miracle from the 31 sometimes in college football
00:35:36 you got to do that look these guys showed up it was senior night that crowd was energetic
00:35:41 but not large the students all turned out i got to tip my cap that baylor student section
00:35:46 that was impressive uh huge crowd right behind our bench those seniors wanted it dave aranda
00:35:52 wanted it there's a couple nfl guys on that on that roster three and eight three and nine
00:35:57 three and 109 i don't care they were playing hard trying to win that football game and
00:36:02 we had a couple chances to put them away but they stuck around those kick returns and then
00:36:06 they stuck around the third quarter with some conversions and they started making some things
00:36:10 happen and the strange way momentum works i mean that's the beauty of the game of football
00:36:16 sports i think more specifically football you know the momentum it sometimes it's it's
00:36:22 a guy stepping up to grab that thing by the collar and bring it back in and at what point
00:36:29 do you guys want to discuss what we saw on the final possession so here's what i was
00:36:35 you guys could tell me if i'm wrong here but i was thinking maybe we we bring big daddy
00:36:39 in for that as well too yeah that's fine yep because because we got it we got to talk with
00:36:44 him about the emotions of that everything that transpired was that i mean we got to
00:36:48 talk a little bit more about gary we got to talk a little bit more about jaheim white
00:36:51 without a doubt um so yeah so i think does that sound good to you guys it's a good time
00:36:55 to break we'll get big daddy in here uh real quick daddy had a good time again one of those
00:37:00 things that we can laugh about so one road trip again i always feel like i should caveat
00:37:06 this because i know we pick up new listeners along the way some of our diehards some of
00:37:10 our casuals people who are just jumping in i work for the pittsburgh steelers okay um
00:37:16 so saturday i'm in cincinnati because the steelers play play sunday and the steelers
00:37:21 once a year have this big i mean for lack of better terms you could call it a media
00:37:25 dinner okay they do it on one road trip every year they invite all the people who who who
00:37:31 are on the road covering the team working for the team it's a blend of media people
00:37:36 and team employees and all that different kind of stuff well it happened saturday at
00:37:40 a at a lovely establishment in cincinnati called the uh the montgomery inn by the way
00:37:44 we had a great time shout out to the fine folks shout out to the fine folks at the montgomery
00:37:48 inn but everybody knows i mean i'm in my wvu i'm at this fancy dinner in my wvu bomber
00:37:55 jacket right because the mountaineers are playing i'm sitting at my table with the game
00:37:59 streaming on my phone as the mountaineers are playing right and finally they put the
00:38:03 game on there's one tv in like this this private room that we have that's like just rolling
00:38:08 like stock footage and stock ads and stuff for the restaurant finally we get them put
00:38:13 the game on all this stuff gentlemen there was probably 40 50 people at this dinner okay
00:38:20 all in a private room at this really nice restaurant when baylor had that second of
00:38:26 the kick return touchdowns everybody was looking at me all 50 people in this thing are like
00:38:32 wait did that just happen is west what's going on west is west okay back there oh my god
00:38:37 everybody look at west check out west how angry is he and one of the stealers video
00:38:42 guys gerard she's like the sean of the stealers okay his name's gerard looks at our waitress
00:38:48 and goes ma'am ma'am my guy my guy in the wvu bomber jacket over there needs another
00:38:53 miller light all right please make it quick because they were all watching me watch the
00:38:59 mountaineers which is which is which is always an adventure certainly but we have to talk
00:39:04 more about garrett green we got to talk more about jaheim white big 22 we also of course
00:39:09 have to talk about that final drive and just i mean we're sitting here on the podcast with
00:39:15 a guy who had a legendary end to his wvu football career zach frazier certainly just had himself
00:39:21 a legendary end to his wvu football career so we'll get to all of that on the other side

00:41:52 roads trust and support those support those who uh support our student athletes and toothman
00:41:57 ford is certainly at the top of that list all right gentlemen starting quarterbacks
00:42:01 in the big 12 in the portal already yeah buckle up yeah that's right i don't think we have
00:42:08 to worry about ours but that's right yeah uh we do need to talk a little garrett green
00:42:14 we do need to talk a little jaheim white we just need to talk sean's experience down there
00:42:18 in waco in general but gentlemen maybe we've buried the lead a little bit because we got
00:42:23 to talk we got to start that last drive and yes garrett green and yes jaheim white and
00:42:30 yes just a herculean effort when nothing was going their way in the second half to to snatch
00:42:36 that one away from baylor and snatch their souls there on senior night but man i i don't
00:42:41 know if you can tell that story you certainly can't tell that story but i think that story
00:42:45 begins with zach frazier i mean anyone who's listened to this podcast for longer than five
00:42:51 minutes knows how we all feel about zach um just the numbers alone right going from a
00:42:59 an offense that averaged 71 73 rush yards per game when he first got here and it was
00:43:06 like a miracle if we broke 100 to now 234 yards per game the best in the power five
00:43:13 an offensive line that allowed the second fewest sacks in power five football an offensive
00:43:18 line that at one point went over 200 straight snaps without allowing a sack up for the national
00:43:25 offensive line ah yes you know as as jed as jed broke down last week apparently not good
00:43:31 enough and he had some fun conversation with neil on the coaches show last week about that
00:43:35 coach more coach more pulled me aside last week and was like well not too happy but okay
00:43:41 like yes sir and hey the anchor of all that of course was one zach frazier center and
00:43:48 gentlemen we are you know i said this before we went to break is kind of a tease but we're
00:43:53 sitting here with a guy he's right below me on the zoom screen here who had about as legendary
00:44:00 of an end of his mountaineer career as any of us could imagine the not only the runaway
00:44:05 beer truck down the sideline right big oh but of course the heartfelt uh impassioned
00:44:10 speech that you gave at the end of that that game and you know i told my teammates we're
00:44:14 not leaving here without that trophy and uh so happy to play for this state as country
00:44:19 roads plays in the background it was like a fairy tale it really was big oh your your
00:44:24 final moments as a west virginia football player different type of fairy tale for zach
00:44:29 of course i don't know if i would call it a fairy tale when you end up sustaining a
00:44:32 serious injury but it it just sums him up as a player doesn't it he's he's pushing was
00:44:39 it preston fox right guys preston hudson clement hudson clement he's pushing hudson clement
00:44:44 to a first down with a minute left in the game as the mountaineers are trying to go
00:44:49 and snatch victory on the road he gets tackled he gets rolled up on from behind he's injured
00:44:55 and he has the wherewithal to oh crap if i lay down here hurt they're gonna have to run
00:45:00 10 seconds off the clock not only does he push his guy across the first down line not
00:45:05 only does he get injured in the process of that he also gets his injured ass off the
00:45:10 field so that the team can keep going uh sean i tell you what i can only imagine what the
00:45:17 emotions and everything were like around that but again that's that's zach frazier in a
00:45:22 nutshell makes the play gets injured still gets off the field yeah and uh wow that's
00:45:28 one that we're all gonna remember for a long long time if you go back and watch the tv
00:45:33 copy right we've been around zach for years he he is he is a calm river there's no up
00:45:40 there's no down there's just zach right smooth as silk if you watch the tv copy he gets to
00:45:45 the sideline he finally gets off we get clear and for the first time in what i believe to
00:45:51 be his career jed you can tell me whether i'm wrong or right the camera stays on him
00:45:56 and you can see him he probably yells an expletive he emotes with his hands and right there you
00:46:01 knew something like that's that's it something is wrong and that where were you on the sidelines
00:46:07 because you were near me right so now let me tell you this to everybody watching to
00:46:12 everybody listening okay you are welcome two minutes left baylor gets the second first
00:46:19 down to take it within two minutes i say i got it we're changing something here i go
00:46:24 in i set up the press conference i go into the press conference room i set it up montoro
00:46:29 and for gail come in for gail says they're kicking a field goal i need to get out there
00:46:32 i say you go i wait another minute as i'm walking back out onto the field and jed you
00:46:37 know baylor's tunnel is beautifully dark and it's gorgeous it is quite literally the light
00:46:42 at the end of the tunnel you walk right into that southeast end zone and it's a gorgeous
00:46:46 view as i'm walking out down the tunnel i see jaheim right run into the end zone as
00:46:52 i step foot onto the field drops in the bucket there we go boys and i walk down the sideline
00:46:57 to watch the last couple of plays so you're welcome that's where you were yes so i get
00:47:02 out there i see zach and that's when i go okay let's fill me in here where everybody's
00:47:07 celebrating and then doug and nick i just view you as omnipresent on the sideline for
00:47:13 road games i mean you and i are together i had to change it up when they got that second
00:47:17 first down i was like i gotta go we gotta change something here i gotta do what i can
00:47:22 well here's here was my perspective i was if i had to guess 12 yards up field from where
00:47:30 it happened and so immediately when you saw that you knew he was hurt you knew he was
00:47:36 hurt now none of us knew the extent of it but when you saw zach leave that told you
00:47:43 the extent of okay that that told me zach isn't injured or zach isn't hurt he's injured
00:47:49 because zach doesn't leave a football game that's zach fraser he's made of iron he's
00:47:52 bulletproof he's he's the best among us all these things pick your adjective he doesn't
00:47:58 leave when he left and the nature in which he left working his way as quickly as possible
00:48:05 on one foot toward our bench toward us it was this eerie you knew i was doing it and
00:48:13 you're like wow there's there's something really wrong there's something really wrong
00:48:17 and as you said he got down there in a reaction kind of told you and meanwhile no time to
00:48:23 re he had two seconds to decide this he had two seconds literally from the time he got
00:48:28 hit and tackled from the back side he deacon jones head slapped that d tackle first he
00:48:33 got him because they hit it's unreal that guy comes back from behind and tackles him
00:48:37 from behind as he's pushing huddy for the first down to move the chains so let's do
00:48:42 the math here huddy wasn't going to make that first down he was four yards short so so first
00:48:48 of all it's a live clock there is a minimum 10 seconds because the live clock the only
00:48:54 reason the clock stopped is because zach got him to the chains to stop the clock so that's
00:48:59 a minimum 10 seconds right there maybe 13 seconds and i'll get back to that in a moment
00:49:06 right there now the runoff would be an additional 10 seconds so first he saved us 10 to 13 seconds
00:49:12 by pushing him and willing him to the sticks which he wasn't going to make it on his own
00:49:17 so he stopped the clock and we saved time there now that gets off the field to save
00:49:22 us an additional 10 because he knew the runoff rule i've always said zach fraser is a quarterback
00:49:27 in an old lineman's body there's not a compliment that i would pay to the brightest quarterback
00:49:32 in the game that i would not pay to zach fraser he's that smart of a football player no doubt
00:49:38 about it on every level every part of his game there's no hole in it as all this is
00:49:43 happening matt is gathering brandon yates on the fly matt moore and brandon yates doesn't
00:49:50 have a warm-up snap stone cold off the bench doesn't have anything he's literally sprinting
00:49:55 full speed to hurry up and line up and barkley and snap the ball boom all that happens simultaneously
00:50:01 so now now let's do the math here zach saved us in my estimation a minimum of 10 could
00:50:06 have been 12 13 whatever just because of the first down because of the movement of the chains
00:50:11 then the 10 second runoff that adds up if i'm doing my math right to 20 to 23 seconds
00:50:17 23 seconds on the clock when james scored this does not happen but for zach fraser doing what
00:50:26 he did that was one of the most remarkable things these eyes have ever seen in a sporting event
00:50:34 we talked all season about how important he is to the team obviously as a player as a captain
00:50:41 and as a teammate they scored the touchdown i'm on the sidelines getting ready to watch the kick
00:50:47 see the defense and everything the entire o-line as they're passing me is asking about him asking
00:50:52 about him asking about him post game we are in the locker room neil is giving his speech
00:50:57 their body surfing him three linemen come up behind me they're not body surfing neil come up
00:51:02 behind me and one of them leans in and tells me what happened to zach what the injury was and the
00:51:06 other two are just standing there they've been in the medical room in the locker room with the team
00:51:12 captain just to check on him he means so much to the team as a player but even more so as a person
00:51:19 that he had multiple people in there with him making sure he was okay rather than in the locker
00:51:24 room jumping around and celebrating because they were worried about him it's a teammate you can
00:51:30 have a better compliment yeah the way this worked out you you were right outside the training room
00:51:35 the training room's adjacent and it's part of the locker room right so what happened was and i had
00:51:40 this extra mic from tony it's tony's mic that i have to use for my phone to do the post game you've
00:51:45 seen my setup there yeah my big fancy setup right yeah well it was still out under the
00:51:50 quarterback's tent it fell out of my bag so i had to leave the locker room and go back out to the
00:51:55 tent and and fetch that thing and get back in before neil went to the media room so in the
00:51:59 middle of the the crowd surfing and everything else i was on the other side of the training room
00:52:04 because that's the way that the locker room was set up that you had to navigate around the crowd
00:52:08 of the team right so i was on the other side of the training room well what i saw it's almost
00:52:13 hard to talk about on the other lines wow i've never seen this side of jed before i love it
00:52:26 it it was hard i when i walked by i didn't want to interrupt but when the training staff
00:52:35 when our professionals who have already had to do some terrible things this year are in there
00:52:42 with their heads down and their hands on his shoulder and zach is just arms shaking staring
00:52:48 not not in any kind of fear anything but he's you know a little restless leg and he's just staring
00:52:53 off and you've never seen zach frazier like that i saw the old line being told
00:53:07 i wish i hadn't and and then i walk around the corner you're there big daddy you're right by
00:53:13 the door of the training room and that's when you see zach sitting in other words there were
00:53:16 two ways into that training room from the one side of the door i saw the o line i saw doug i
00:53:21 saw why i saw the whole crew in there they were being told what had happened and their reaction
00:53:26 told me this isn't good this that'll stick with me and then i saw you as i ran in the corner so
00:53:34 first i saw the o-line i'm piecing this together you're the one who told me so then you lean in
00:53:41 and told me as i'm looking at zach you're in my ear telling me yeah after i just saw the o-line
00:53:46 now i gotta get back to the field and grab this gear and get back in so now i work my way back
00:53:53 past the training room here comes zach's mom flying almost in a sprint behind her here comes
00:54:01 ray zach's dad he looked at me right i played against each other right he looked at me
00:54:08 right away just everything i saw i just grabbed his shoulder and clenched as he kept moving and
00:54:16 on we went and i'm telling you guys what i saw on that field there's that's what i was telling
00:54:24 owen there's a certain category of plays okay i mean we're all going to remember different plays
00:54:30 for different reasons majors run that's one reason pat white's run against louisville that's
00:54:35 one reason okay but then there's the almost the uh what am i looking for here the iconic type
00:54:43 folklore plays owen bust in a belly play as a fox announcer brandishes him forever the runaway
00:54:52 beer truck in that same gallery of plays is what we watched zach bracer do i mean that was it was
00:55:00 amazing in in the west virginia parlance that's a john henry play that is iconic legendary bigger
00:55:08 than anything you could ever imagine well yeah yeah i hope i hope to like i i think because
00:55:18 you've you've felt the reaction on social media over the last you know 48 hours or so
00:55:23 but like i hope it doesn't take a bunch of wvu obsessed dorks like us to realize that either
00:55:31 either you know what i mean like i hope i hope even the casualest of casual wvu fans amongst
00:55:36 our fan base realizes not only what what zach has meant for three years but just everything
00:55:43 that transpired uh in that moment on saturday night as well too because it's easy like jed said
00:55:48 it's easy when when it's big o rumbling for what was it 60 70 yards and you get brandished the
00:55:55 runaway beer truck right one of the great nicknames and then and then owens on national tv
00:56:02 crying and pouring his heart out about what it meant like even the most casual of wvu fans can
00:56:07 pick up on that you you you got to be a little in tune to pick up on what zach did um and i just i
00:56:14 hope i do hope that's something that permeates and again like i said not just the select percentage
00:56:21 of the fan base that's you know that's invested like the four of us are all in our different ways
00:56:26 um i i do i i hope that that that's one that that everybody recognizes no one it's such a bang bang
00:56:34 play like that too and that's the thing you know it's kind of a seamless transition so you don't
00:56:39 really see you know what's really going on the thing to me uh you know being fortunate enough to
00:56:47 to have a career uh beyond you know mountaineer um football is the fact that this guy has given so
00:56:59 west west virginia native grew up you know 20 minutes down the road yeah um exceptional athlete
00:57:07 has worked his tail off has given nothing but blood sweat and tears for morgantown and you know
00:57:14 in the last game he plays regular season game he plays for the mountaineers you know suffers an
00:57:19 injury which you know is not good you know it's not good for him uh going forth uh as he as he
00:57:30 should have been able to uh been sent off playing a bowl game uh having a great you know a great
00:57:37 you know great career illustrious career at west virginia and then going into the senior bowl
00:57:42 and then nfl draft and being able to start his career now he has you know a whole another road
00:57:48 against him uh and another battle that he's going to have to overcome um with with this setback and
00:57:55 it is a setback but it's it's something that you know when you are truly invested with it's hard
00:58:02 not to get emotional about you know players players getting injured if you don't if you
00:58:08 don't feel for when a player gets injured i really do question your involvement or your uh your fandom
00:58:16 as far as what you feel for the program what what it's really about you know these are young men
00:58:20 that are putting their bodies on the line you know so that we can have um you know great great
00:58:27 saturday afternoons uh and and celebrate our our uh our alma mater but you know in the in the
00:58:35 football world it doesn't get any tougher than that and that's really the play that that defines
00:58:44 you and as far as that goes you don't go down any harder that's like you said that's a that's a john
00:58:51 henry that's a that's a paul bunyan that's a you know you know absolute john wayne of of west
00:59:00 virginia play um so obviously you know speedy recover for for zach here and and it's it's tough
00:59:08 not to feel when someone he's i mean he's he's been the tip of the spear for the mountaineers
00:59:12 for the last three years you know a long time so you know and a guy who completely embodies what a
00:59:20 mountaineer is the the thing go ahead big daddy i was gonna say the brighter side of this is if
00:59:26 there's one guy that i know is gonna bounce back from anything because he's the toughest bastard
00:59:31 i've ever been around at zach fraser and silver lining to all this we're on the bus as we fly out
00:59:37 of waco we go to the airport we're we're holed up a while for the first bus to unload we see why a
00:59:42 golf cart has come a golf cart takes zach to the plane we're on the fifth bus so when we're getting
00:59:48 on we're the last people getting on the plane so we can take off and get out zach is sitting in
00:59:52 first class like he always does surrounded by his fellow linemen and he's got a smile on his face
00:59:57 he you know the pain that he's in you know how upset he is but he's with his guys and i'll say
01:00:03 this it people said well how could he know so quickly to not fall prey to that rule get off the
01:00:12 kid i'm like look no one zach i would have been shocked have you not yeah no one's act i would
01:00:18 have been shocked yeah had he had he taken longer because that's just who he is but i'm gonna say
01:00:24 this and i'm glad you said that big daddy because i've been making a point to people
01:00:28 bouncing backs never had its ass kicked like he's about to yeah let's never face zach frazier let's
01:00:34 go back a little bit imagine you're a sophomore in high school in the heavyweight division and
01:00:40 you have to go up against him in high school let alone human being has become imagine what he was
01:00:47 like then to see who he is now and somebody him getting up and showing that was high school state
01:00:55 wrestling champion zach frazier getting his ass back into the mat like somebody in may or early
01:01:00 may go ahead go ahead well no i was just going to say i i just wanted clarification this is also
01:01:04 the same guy i remember sean told us this story but i i i remember 90 of it he approached you
01:01:10 guys right about adding closed captions to the videos because he was his brother or his cousin
01:01:16 yeah he was like hey can we do that he learned sign language he learned sign language yeah
01:01:23 he's signing to his family member he learned sign language to communicate with her it's
01:01:27 it's like somebody in late april early may i don't have the dates of the draft in front of me west
01:01:32 you're going to be out there it's feb this story will be told yeah the draft is uh is april yeah
01:01:37 okay well this story needs to told by zach frazier in a microphone to you when you're in
01:01:42 indianapolis but oh buddy you you are you already know i'm i can't wait i can't wait to talk about
01:01:48 this at the combine and talk to him somebody somebody in some war room you said late april
01:01:55 somebody in some war room is gonna put his name up on the board and submit it
01:02:00 and roger gondel is gonna call his name out and let me tell you part of the reason they'll call
01:02:07 the name his name out when they do is because of what just happened and what he's about to do
01:02:14 after it happened they're gonna say can you believe this kid first of all we were already
01:02:19 in love with him but look what happened to him and look what he did after that this is going to
01:02:24 be part of his story this is gonna be part of the reason part of the narrative right owen the reason
01:02:30 you want that guy in your locker room the reason you want him as one of the faces of your franchise
01:02:34 because of the way he bounced back to one of the the greatest adversities he's ever faced he's
01:02:40 gonna bounce back from this in spades no doubt in my mind and i will also let me oh jeb please
01:02:46 preston fox left you talk about leaving it on the field preston fox needs a shout out because
01:02:54 preston fox made i hope you appreciated watching that on tv because in person it was spectacular
01:03:02 i literally thought garrett was under pressure the ball sailed a little bit i thought no chance
01:03:07 no chance he's catching no chance he turned into mr fantastic stretched his body talk about reckless
01:03:14 abandon came down not protecting himself at all and that's what led to the injury and absolutely
01:03:22 left it all on the field to make that catch so incredible job also we'd be remiss if we didn't
01:03:28 talk about preston fox because as zach left it on the field preston fox left it on the field this is
01:03:34 a great football team full of quality guys tough guys and i i want i'm telling you if there's a we
01:03:43 always talk about the west virginia football mount rushmore right we've had these conversations even
01:03:48 on the pod before right well what if there's a west virginia football toughness mount rushmore
01:03:54 our guy owens on it right yeah zach's next to him there's a long list of very tough
01:04:00 let's have a conversation that's what i say you know if we could somehow make the mount rushmore
01:04:07 be a picture of like zach holding owen too like i think that'd be heaven on earth with grant with
01:04:13 grant wiley standing over their shoulder now wes i'm gonna get you fired up a little bit here
01:04:19 because i know it's imagine a world in which all of the yinzers that i see get their wish
01:04:26 and old zachariah ships another hour up north so he's still within an hour and a half of his
01:04:33 homeland could you i mean could you imagine well part of me obviously you guys know i'm torn on
01:04:39 this because part of me would love it the steelers desperately need a center and and and i would love
01:04:44 it if zach frazier please was that guy but also at the same time i don't know if all the pit and
01:04:48 penn state dorks deserve zach frazier that root for the steelers that's very fair now listen i
01:04:53 sit there and argue about kenny pickett and pat fryer mooth and all that i don't know if they
01:04:56 deserve a wvu guy like this all those the penn state folks are already on our side you know that
01:05:02 after the first stream actually that's a good point all the penn state folks are like okay yeah
01:05:06 so you know what all these west virginia fans root against kenny pickett so i'm gonna root against
01:05:10 zach frazier yeah i can already see it now so zach frazier go ahead wes no i was just gonna say i
01:05:18 want to make sure we get a big shout out to brandon yates in this conversation as well too
01:05:22 because you want to you want to talk about as seamless of a transition as you watch the tv
01:05:26 copy back they have an iso of him coming out on the field he's just just turns around says
01:05:31 something to garrett nods his head boom he was ready two plays two plays later we're in the end
01:05:35 zone and and just guys five man just five men protect i want to walk you through what happened
01:05:41 here in a second on that protection okay with a backup center quote unquote in the game all right
01:05:47 zach frazier set the table for all that followed right and to some extent so did preston fox i
01:05:54 almost a precursor of this at halftime i was having this conversation with garrett
01:06:00 before he jumped in with the quarterbacks when sean came out
01:06:03 there was baylor's drive with two minutes to go okay then we had the negative yards
01:06:10 plan for it was a sack or a tfl followed by they had a holding call okay and we had three timeouts
01:06:17 so there's two minutes to go and there's a holding call against baylor and for a brief moment we kind
01:06:22 of weighed the pros and cons of accepting the penalty you remember and neil said yeah back
01:06:27 him up so he backed him up and then he immediately took his first time out okay and i was sitting
01:06:32 there thinking again i'm a clock management geek i'm a nerd that's oh no i was thinking was oh yes
01:06:39 yes yes yes two minutes to go he did that because the play clock resets to 25 baylor was going to
01:06:44 take 23 off of it so i now know immediately of course anybody sitting at home knows after the
01:06:49 next down and the next night he's taking the second third the critical one was the first one
01:06:52 so what he did was he saved us 23 seconds because baylor was going to take that thing down they
01:06:58 were already so far behind the sticks that they wanted to milk the clock a little bit before they
01:07:02 even tried to press a little more so first time out we saved 23 seconds take the second time out
01:07:07 take the third time out and i asked garrett i said so we saved 23 seconds on a 25 second play
01:07:12 clock because baylor was going to take it down before snapping it how many seconds was on the
01:07:16 clock when you scored he said less than 20 i said 15 there's your 23 so that happened because of
01:07:24 when we took the first time out if you wait you're out of time that drive doesn't result most likely
01:07:30 in what it resulted so that was the precursor to what you saw for a drive with no timeouts now we
01:07:36 had to strike that rhythm now we had to push the football beyond the change or get out of bounds
01:07:41 one or the other you got two choices no timeout you're starting your 20 minute 14 to go plenty
01:07:46 of time plenty of time no doubt about it as long as you move the sticks the quarterback the
01:07:52 quarterback in you doesn't freak out like people in the stands and people watching tv you understand
01:07:56 the inner workings of clock management you understand hey just get first downs and we're
01:08:00 good we're good just first downs are the key first downs are the key so push the football vertical
01:08:05 so we're pushing the football vertical the scariest play was the first one because it was a tunnel
01:08:09 screen and now you're in danger of not pushing the football vertical so zach bailed us out we get the
01:08:14 first down clock stops in comes brandon on we go now what ends up happening hudson makes a great
01:08:21 grab great grab to push us toward midfield a great grab it was on the highlights i saw the uh uh the
01:08:28 wvu football account post today did you shoot that who shot that no no that was andrew andrew and
01:08:32 ross were the ones that had that down the stretch that was a great shot that was a great shot but
01:08:36 a great grab by huddy so now we're pushing the ball upfield okay so now everybody in the stadium
01:08:43 is outside of garret green and nervous wreck all right including me i'm on the sidelines we're
01:08:47 around midfield all right well nolan harvath who's one of our assistant strength coaches okay
01:08:52 you've a friend uh big daddy's and one of our sideline buddies for the for the biggest uh you
01:08:56 know sports bar in america so nolan and i he's a quarterback junkie so we always talk about
01:09:01 quarterbacks before the game during the game after the game do you remember the next play
01:09:07 when garret against a four-man rush now to start with the first half of that drive
01:09:12 dave aranda is running sim pressures simulated pressures he's showing certain guys and dropping
01:09:19 them but they're four man sim pressures so up to midfield he sticks with four man sim pressures
01:09:26 well up to midfield the last four man sim pressure garrett takes it tucks it moves
01:09:31 runs right toward our sideline ran into me okay so i saw his face i'm standing next to no i'm
01:09:39 staying literally i wish i had no on the podcast because he would vouch for this garrett looks me
01:09:45 right in the face he he's not looking at me he's looking through me okay sprints right back out or
01:09:49 even trots right back out because now the clock stops so he's back out on the field but i gotta
01:09:54 look right in his face and i looked at nolan i said dude he's doing it i said i'm chill now i
01:10:01 know what's about to happen i don't know how it's gonna happen i just saw him where's the work there
01:10:07 was something about this this calm excitement this this this bundle of emotions that was just
01:10:14 completely under i can't even explain it there was just a vibe to the kid who ran out of bounds
01:10:20 right in front of me you weren't stopping it you weren't stopping it one way or the other that
01:10:24 football was gonna matriculate down the field we were gonna score and i had this weird calm over me
01:10:30 all of a sudden that i didn't have for the first three or four plays that drive i was like wow and
01:10:33 i can kind of just kick back and see how it unfolds because i'm a hundred percent certain it's gonna
01:10:38 i just don't know how i don't know how you're not gonna stop that kid i just saw running about
01:10:43 that look on his face the competitor i i can't even explain it but i told nolan that and i didn't
01:10:48 feel that way after that point i was just nervous as anybody so what ends up happening now the play
01:10:53 we run trips to the field we have a single receiver to the boundary all right first of all
01:10:59 we went to vertical the snap before on the verse package to ej well that was the first time when
01:11:04 we crossed midfield now dave aranda changes his blitz configuration he's no longer in four man
01:11:10 sim pressure as he goes to five all right so now bear in mind we have a backup center in the game
01:11:15 so what we do after the vertical to ej which didn't have much of a chance they were expecting
01:11:20 vertical that corner got a heck of a cushion so now we go trips to the field single receiver to
01:11:25 the boundary and huddy and now we use motion to motion empty week owen they they brought up a
01:11:32 five man pressure look it was oriented to the field their will linebacker number 41 was the
01:11:39 sim pressure guy on the edge okay so what they did we motioned weak to his side so now if you can
01:11:46 just envision this in your minds how you saw it on tv it'll make sense to you what you saw as i
01:11:51 explained this so now you have jaheim motioning weak and we're going empty so that gives first
01:11:58 of all jaheim a free release so he has no passper responsibilities but now we're in true five man
01:12:04 protection there's no tight end to help there's no back to help it's mono e mono r5 against whatever
01:12:09 they throw at us all right here comes dave aranda with a five man sim pressure the simulated part
01:12:15 the will backer actually he's coming but he's not on the snap he bails to the flat he's replaced in
01:12:22 the blitz configuration by the nickel back over the slot to the other side of the field so what
01:12:26 they did was they outnumbered us to the right even though it's only a five man pressure four of those
01:12:32 pressure uh defenders four of those rushers came from the right side of the football so they
01:12:36 outnumbered us on the right side meanwhile the communication with our quote-unquote backup center
01:12:41 in the game was sublime we checked it off we caught all five defenders it was five on five
01:12:47 communicated perfectly but Garrett just enough time what's happening to the weak side in the flat
01:12:53 how did you even get open now here what happened here's what happens the corner that uh chateau i
01:12:58 can't remember his last name number 21 he ends up staying in man coverage and shadowing huddy
01:13:05 off the scene on that shade and boundary side while the safety stays up top so what happens is
01:13:11 the will backer drops he buzzes the flat so he buzzes the flat very obviously thinking he has
01:13:17 deep help he thinks they're in three so he buzzes the flat thinking hey i got quick flat responsibility
01:13:23 his head's on a swivel he lets jaheim run on by why wouldn't he because he thinks he has deep help
01:13:27 meanwhile the deep help that he thought he had the only deep help it could have been was that corner
01:13:32 if they were in cover three with that corner having that deep third of the field instead the corner
01:13:37 shadowed huddy back inside man coverage leaving a complete void on that up the rail on that wheel
01:13:45 route that's what happened so i asked garrett after the game i'm like what played out there
01:13:50 and he said i couldn't tell if it was man or if it was owner if they blew a gasket he just i saw him
01:13:54 streak open there was there was a play my senior year at glenville almost identical to the way this
01:14:00 unfolded we were down by seven points no timeouts left we had to use our timeouts to get the ball
01:14:05 back they kicked it through the end zone we started at our 20 with 50 some seconds left down seven
01:14:09 we drove down to their 25 we're facing a fourth and 10 with no timeouts and 12 seconds to go
01:14:15 down seven when i was playing for rich we go empty just like they did same thing trips to the field
01:14:22 twins to the back side the difference was my weak slot was chris george my stud all american jerry
01:14:26 rice type guy 430 catches right so we run a switch route same thing they did except the concept with
01:14:33 us was a true switch it was the wheel route okay up the rail by the slot and the sluggo by the x
01:14:40 same concept except we were mashing it out with a back out of the backfield with jaheim well what
01:14:45 they did with us the safety kicked off the hash to go over top of chris who was running up the
01:14:50 rail where jaheim was so now they doubled him up so i saw bonbon our x split down the seam and i'm
01:14:56 like i can't even explain what i'm seeing is that man is that zone i just see my guy open that's
01:15:01 what garrett saw but it was an inverted version of that so garrett saw the outside of the rail open
01:15:06 right it was a reaction as much as it was a reef so he pushes the football delivers a perfect throw
01:15:12 here comes big daddy out of the tunnel to enjoy it that is what happened so it all starts with a
01:15:17 backup center great communication up front okay baylor no i don't know if our motion to the weak
01:15:23 side impacted their coverage or they blew a gasket as a result of it but there was some kind of
01:15:28 miscommunication because you had one defender in zone one defender in man and it just wasn't going
01:15:32 to work and we attacked the perfect spot but it wouldn't have happened had we not picked up that
01:15:37 five man seven pressure and those things are nasty now we talked in the pregame show a five man seven
01:15:43 pressures this year for dave aranda that's one of his favorite looks yeah in the past that's what
01:15:48 he really gets to you with he's really messing people up with those five man seven pressures
01:15:53 you don't know which five it is but here come five this year not so much going into the game i even
01:15:59 had the numbers for him yeah eight touchdown passes allowed and they picked off no footballs
01:16:04 with five man seven pressures so it was almost the ideal look for us to try and attack and maybe
01:16:11 that's part of why it happened but well everything about the thing of you neil said post game too
01:16:16 they rep that every day have not run it yet this year rep it every day have not run it always in
01:16:21 the arsenal right time right place and again i would just like to say to everybody you're welcome
01:16:28 tubby mctubberson walking up the tunnel into the locker room there's a tfl there's a holding
01:16:33 penalty there's a missed field goal like you're you're welcome i'm doing my part well thank you
01:16:39 very much i did not mean for that to happen to you i'm sorry that's not on me i'm taking positive
01:16:44 not the negative would you see garrett superstitious where you were after the celebration
01:16:50 he's moving his hands in the air i i walked so again my camera is set up for post game i walk
01:16:57 out onto the field and i find andrew and ross our video guys and i go look camera's in there it's
01:17:04 set up i'm not shooting a damn thing this is up to you guys good luck godspeed and they both go
01:17:08 don't worry we got it like all right i'm gonna be a fan boy and just walk up and down the sidelines
01:17:12 and be excited with everyone so both of us are accounted for wes we know where you were when
01:17:18 this was unfolding owen where were you i was uh i was at brent hatcher's house sitting on the couch
01:17:26 upstairs in his band cable watching the game you were running in you better be back you better be
01:17:32 back in that spot for the bowl game brother yeah well call me on the team bus he but you were on
01:17:38 your way home from brent is that what you were i was actually watching i just had got so you know
01:17:44 friday we win the game i'm so jacked up i don't go to bed till 3 a.m i got work in the morning
01:17:51 we work i'm driving home i stop at brent hatcher's who's uh one of our drivers at ups he's got a
01:17:59 he's got a nice little pad he's got an awesome little game room upstairs but uh he's got like
01:18:04 he's got a huge big screen and then he's got two other side tvs and just like college football
01:18:09 mania up there oh yeah so uh bad time yeah so so i was up there in the old recliner and uh i was
01:18:16 like you know we already talked about the unfoldings of the game at the beginning um so i was just
01:18:22 sipping on my uh my uh big timber um porters okay my four pack and you want heavy boys okay yeah i
01:18:32 was feeling pretty good it is winter time after all sean it is yeah it is listen let's get some
01:18:38 guinness all right let's get some big timbers it's it's time i know and i just found out that
01:18:43 monster energy now makes beer that tastes like monster oh honey no oh honey no that's for loco
01:18:49 big oh you are too old for that nonsense all right no caffeine loco story no caffeine in them
01:18:59 it can never be told it's just alcohol apparently but oh sean i do as well too maybe we'll tell us
01:19:05 it's just it's to wrap this thing up here yeah no chance on the wedge buster episode that's yes
01:19:11 that's right yes as we as we wrap this thing up here a final thank you to our friends at fortis
01:19:16 to our guy rick lewis for roof performance and financial certainty guaranteed visit fortis
01:19:22 dot us dot com well boys i mean that's a cool that's a heavy that's a heavy one to close down
01:19:31 the regular season i tell you yeah we we will find out bowl matchups here well i guess what
01:19:36 not until next week right sunday yeah it should be um so but we're bowling we're eight and four
01:19:42 and i will say this as much as it might pain all of us i'm rooting for texas on saturday i know
01:19:49 because if texas goes to the college football playoff we bump up in the bowl pecking order and
01:19:55 we get a little bit we get a little bit juicier of a matchup so look at west welcome horn either way
01:20:01 we went either way that's good point very fair good point and we already won we already won
01:20:05 because we already won because oklahoma is uh is not in the big 12 championship how about some
01:20:11 crazy finishes i mean ours obviously we talked jed a little bit uh about auburn and alabama earlier
01:20:16 yeah that oklahoma state byu game my goodness that is well too just absolutely insane you always got
01:20:23 to love the final week of the uh the college football trip to jerry world on the line trip
01:20:28 to jerry world on the line you brought it the storm in mormon show up show up in this league
01:20:35 or you'll be sorry you didn't i don't care what the record is i don't care who you're playing
01:20:40 no doubt no doubt we had the big the big snow storm between iowa state and kansas state it was a
01:20:47 i'll tell you what it was a fun final weekend of the college football season obviously we're not
01:20:52 going anywhere uh we will have a little bit different of a week this week no preview episode
01:20:56 later on in the week obviously but we'll still have our our pick 'em segment we'll do a little
01:21:00 conference little conference championship edition of our pick 'em segment uh we'll obviously give
01:21:06 our uh our trophy for our our winner throughout the season i don't know spoiler alert but he might
01:21:11 be wearing an avon coburn jersey right now on the podcast if you're watching on youtube uh chad's
01:21:17 looking down like wait a second do i have a dragon thing anyone um and and yes still a uh is this the
01:21:23 last phil steel friday jed coming up this week well we're gonna we're gonna do here's what we're
01:21:27 gonna do we're gonna do a phil steel friday for championship weekend conference championship
01:21:32 weekend and then we talk to phil what we're gonna do is at some point get together all season for a
01:21:37 bowl episode really to talk wvu but there's other some other bowls that we'll discuss as well but i
01:21:42 but i'll say this when you look at the big 12 championship game here's what i'll close with
01:21:46 i say we win either way because if texas wins yes everybody gets there's a chance texas goes to the
01:21:54 playoff not guaranteed there's a chance and everybody gets knocked up a spot but if texas
01:21:58 loses then we don't have to worry about texas going 2-10 in the sec bragging about winning
01:22:03 the big 12 last year yeah that's how much better the sec is the big 12 we're 2-10 here we won that
01:22:09 league they can they can shove it up there texas went into tuscaloosa and beat alabama so they can
01:22:13 shove it up their bum with that one as far as i'm concerned all right you can put that you can put
01:22:18 that narrative to rest but gentlemen this has been a lot of fun sean if this is the last time i don't
01:22:22 know i'm sure we'll have you on again at some point but if this is the last regular time uh
01:22:27 thank you as always for your time partner you know that people enjoy it we uh yeah we will
01:22:31 absolutely absolutely uh but that'll do it that's right yeah there we go after the bowl game how
01:22:37 about that yeah why not and then sean do you know i know it's way too early for me to be asking you
01:22:41 this you know if you're gonna be at the combine or not in fact do not know yet because combine
01:22:46 is always basketball i might be with women for any kind of tournament runs or anything like that
01:22:51 we had one magical run in 2019 and and i think about it off me you and salty just out in
01:22:57 indianapolis oh it was it was it was fantastic that was my yeah that was my maiden voyage at the
01:23:03 at the combine that was mine too i had no idea what's going on yeah well regardless whether
01:23:08 sean's there or not i'm gonna spread the gospel of zach fraser there in indianapolis for five or
01:23:12 six days but we obviously it's in the regular season but where i'm going with this long
01:23:17 rambling end is that the content will not end here on this program so eight and four let's get a good
01:23:24 bowl match up let's keep it rolling here let's get the nine wins and let's uh let's build some
01:23:27 positivity some momentum some big mo as we head to the offseason for our handsome tubby man of gold
01:23:35 for our producer skylar callahan slash co-host skylar callahan the signal caller jed drenning
01:23:41 and the runaway beer truck owen schmidt i'm wesley euler thanks so much for rocking and
