00:00 The Philippine General Hospital in Manila is being called
00:03 amidst the increasing number of pneumonia patients being brought there.
00:07 This is the news of Bam Alegre.
00:10 Now that the weather is cold,
00:14 Stella Almelor's vendor noticed that her grandchildren are all sick.
00:18 Even her youngest grandson, who is only four months old,
00:21 is with her in the store. He is also infected.
00:23 My grandchildren, including my son,
00:26 are all infected.
00:30 Especially in Bulacan,
00:32 my children and my grandchildren are there.
00:36 Almost all of them are infected.
00:38 Stella does not let her grandchildren look at the specialist.
00:41 More than four months since the COVID-19 state of public health emergency in the country,
00:45 pneumonia cases are increasing in the Philippine General Hospital in Manila.
00:49 According to the PGH,
00:51 many of the patients are intubated
00:53 and they are placed in a container with a tube attached to the ventilator
00:56 so that air can pass through.
00:58 The problem is, of course, when they are intubated,
01:01 the treatment lasts for a long time.
01:03 Because of their severe pneumonia,
01:07 they cannot easily enter the hospital
01:10 because the ICU is full.
01:13 There are also patients who are sick and old.
01:16 The thing that reduces the chance of being infected
01:21 are those who have cancer, stroke, heart attack, dialysis.
01:26 We are talking to the LGU hospitals about the pneumonia.
01:31 They are the ones who promised to provide the PGH's specialty services.
01:39 In the first three months of this year,
01:41 more than 41,000 pneumonia cases were reported in the country.
01:44 More than 200,000 cases were reported for the whole of 2022.
01:48 According to Dr. Jonas Del Rosario,
01:51 pneumonia is a sign of difficulty breathing,
01:53 constipation, and a recurrent or non-curing fever.
01:57 For both children and adults,
01:59 it is a big help if they can receive the PGH's Pneumococcal Vaccine.
02:05 This is a fight against a common source of pneumonia,
02:09 which is Streptococcus pneumoniae.
02:12 After the birth of the newborn,
02:13 the Health Department also observed
02:15 the increase of influenza-like illnesses or ILI,
02:18 which are infectious infections caused by various types of bacteria.
02:22 The number of cases reported from January to October 13 this year
02:25 is 45% higher than the number reported at the same time last year.
02:31 Although the number of cases will slow down by November,
02:34 according to the DOH,
02:35 we should still be careful about wearing face masks and getting vaccinated.
02:39 According to Dr. Ron G. Insolante,
02:41 aside from the time difference,
02:43 the increase of respiratory illnesses
02:45 is possible due to the so-called immunity gap.
02:47 The immunity gap is a global phenomenon,
02:51 because after the pandemic,
02:53 the vaccine-preventable diseases,
02:55 including influenza, pneumonia, measles,
03:00 the vaccination coverage is really decreasing
03:03 in vulnerable populations, including children.
