00:06 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most hilarious horror films.
00:11 Number 10. Zombieland.
00:18 Instead of trying to outright scare people,
00:20 Zombieland opts to make them laugh with a clever meta-commentary on the genre.
00:24 The lead character Columbus develops rules on how to live through an epidemic.
00:28 "Rule number one for surviving Zombieland? Cardio."
00:31 "When the virus struck, for obvious reasons, the first ones to go were the fatties."
00:39 On the road with Tallahassee, the hero's neurotic tendencies conflict with his more
00:45 physically able friend. There's also more than a few instances of genuine blood splatter.
00:50 Never taking itself too seriously though,
00:52 the movie features an A-grade star cameo to keep the mood light.
00:56 "Bill Murray, you're a zombie?"
00:58 "Ahh! Ahh! Ow! I'm on fire! Ouch!"
01:06 "You're not a zombie, you're talking to a- you're okay."
01:10 "The hell I am!"
01:12 With strong performances from Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson,
01:15 this horror flick shines with some funny dialogue and an entertaining adventure.
01:20 "Tallahassee had a sick sense of humor when it came to zombies.
01:24 Zombies aren't the most lovable creatures, but he really hated them.
01:26 In fact, the only thing he was more obsessed with than killing zombies was finding a Twinkie.
01:31 Something about a Twinkie reminded him of a time not so long ago."
01:35 To this day, horror movie characters still haven't learned to avoid creepy houses in
01:42 the middle of nowhere. "Oh my god, it's uh, beautiful."
01:47 The Cabin in the Woods decides to use this trope and other cliches in order to subvert expectations,
01:53 resulting in some darkly funny scenes. The film works as a parody and revisionist look at the
01:58 genre. "Guess how we're slowing down cognition?" "I don't know." "The hair dye." "Dumb blonde,
02:06 very artistic." There's also more than a few surprises along the way that make this
02:11 cabin that much more sinister. From overconfident jocks to inspired monster cameos, anyone with a
02:17 deep love of classic horror will definitely find something to chuckle over, and then some.
02:21 "But this is zombie redneck torture family, see? They're entirely separate species,
02:27 like the difference between an elephant and an elephant seal."
02:29 Directed by John Landis, An American Werewolf in London might be among the most terrifying
02:36 comedies of its kind. David Kessler is attacked by a werewolf and later transforms into one.
02:42 His change into the fearsome creature ranks among the grossest and creepiest moments in horror.
02:48 (Screaming)
02:55 Did we mention this is a pretty funny movie also? "Yes sir?" "A naked American man stole my balloon."
03:02 "What?" Landis does not skimp on the jokes as Kessler struggles to hold back his killer urges
03:07 under the full moon. It's definitely a dark comedy, but there are also some scary parts
03:12 to balance out the experience. (Screaming)
03:19 The shocking ending really brings home the unorthodox mix of tones. Often underappreciated,
03:25 An American Werewolf in London deserves a place alongside the best of the genre.
03:30 "Go, stay on the road. Keep clear of the moors."
03:38 A freshly dead couple wish to scare away the new residents of their home.
03:42 They enlist the help of the bio-exorcist Beetlejuice, but their plans don't exactly
03:46 go as they hoped. "What I mean is can you be scary?" "Oh, oh, I know the grasp of it. Can I be scary?"
03:53 "What do you think of this?" (Screaming)
03:57 "You like it?" Michael Keaton's role as the titular character ranks among the most striking
04:02 and entertaining of its decade. "I'm feeling a little, uh, anxious if you know what I mean."
04:07 "Been about 600 years after all. I wonder where a guy, an everyday joe like myself,
04:13 could find a little action." Combined with the direction of Tim Burton, this zany comedy
04:20 completely turns the haunted house genre on its head. The movie ends up being a crazy adventure
04:25 that's caught between the land of the living and the dead. "Hell, I'll possess myself if I gotta!"
04:30 For even more wacky fun and to keep audiences on their heels, the film includes some wonderful
04:36 calypso music sequences. "Stuck banana till the morning come!"
04:45 Number six, Shaun of the Dead. What if an underachiever and his slacker friend had to
04:49 survive the zombie apocalypse? Shaun of the Dead answers this question with some hilarious changes
04:55 to the genre. "Can't see any. Maybe it's not as bad as all that. Oh, no, there they are."
05:02 Directed by Edgar Wright, this stylish comedy features Simon Pegg as the titular character
05:07 who stumbles his way through an outbreak. Shaun and his friend Ed bring their own brand of dark
05:11 humor to the tense situation. With some dry British wit, these unlikely heroes end up doing a much
05:17 better job than anyone could have expected. Thanks to a laser-tight script, this movie
05:22 shines every step of the way as a laugh-a-minute horror comedy classic. "Take on. Go to mum's.
05:28 Kill Phil. Sorry. Grab Liz. Go to the Winchester. Have a nice cold pint and wait for all this to
05:34 blow over." Number five, What We Do in the Shadows. Mockumentaries have never quite looked like this
05:41 movie. "Peter, wake up." Turning the camera on a group of vampires, What We Do in the Shadows does
05:48 a wonderful job making the viewers fall in love with them. "We're going to have a flat meeting
05:53 in about 10 minutes." "20." "Okay." Living as roommates, the hilarious characters bicker and
06:00 argue just as anybody else would. Watching the gang fend off werewolves and hang out with their
06:04 human friend Stu makes for delightful viewing. "Stu is the first human friend that I've had for a
06:10 long time. With humans, there is a tendency to die." "Yeah." Actor and co-director Taika Waititi
06:19 also makes sure to include some fun jabs at vampire mythology. Creating a fish out of water
06:24 story, the film finds plenty of comedy in putting a group of lovable villains in modern society.
06:29 "Okay. I got you this chicken."
06:36 Number four, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. When a couple finds themselves at a strange castle,
06:44 their lives are unraveled by a cast of musically talented characters.
06:48 "Let me show you a rhyme, maybe play you a sign. You look like you're both pretty grooving."
06:56 This ambitious tale turned a stage show into a cinematic phenomenon. Parodying both horror and
07:02 sci-fi films, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is nothing short of bold in its storytelling.
07:07 Powered by the performances of Tim Curry, the film features an explosion of costumes,
07:12 makeup, and wacky songs. Becoming a celebrated cult experience, the movie has enjoyed an enduring
07:29 legacy that inspires midnight screenings all over the world to this day. "Let's get out of here."
07:34 "For God's sake, keep a grip on yourself, Janet." "But it seems so unhealthy here."
07:39 "It's just a party, Janet." Number three, Ghostbusters. Among the most popular and
07:44 quoted comedies from the 1980s, Ghostbusters is an essential part of pop culture. Starring
07:50 multiple legends, the movie expertly uses its cast in a hilarious take on ghost stories.
07:55 "I hope we can take care of this quietly." "Tonight." "Yes, sir. Don't worry. We handle
08:01 this kind of thing all the time." Parapsychologists stumble upon a serious
08:05 problem in New York City, using their wits and technical prowess to subdue their targets.
08:10 It's a mix of comedy and horror that also includes some memorable catchphrases.
08:14 "If there's something strange, and it may be good, who you gonna call?" "Ghostbusters!"
08:21 Bill Murray's often improvised performance ranks among the greatest parts of this haunted adventure.
08:26 "Get him out of here." "Fine. I'll fix you, Venkman. I'm gonna fix you." "I'm gonna get you
08:32 a nice front basket." "I'm gonna miss him." "Alright." Whether you're a horror fan or just
08:37 want to laugh, you will find plenty to love about this classic.
08:41 Number two, Young Frankenstein. Co-written by Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks, this parody of the
08:58 legendary character includes amazing jokes and an effective atmosphere. "My name is Frankenstein!"
09:08 Brooks's black and white presentation makes the movie feel like a true time capsule.
09:12 Wilder's lead performance blends the mad scientist with a tragic comedy figure.
09:17 "What's the matter with you people? I was joking! Don't you know a joke when you hear one?"
09:22 With a dynamic cast alongside him, the actor shines with some hilarious scenes parodying
09:27 the original Frankenstein films. There's also an incredible dance number that keeps the laughs coming.
09:32 Come for the takedown of classic horror elements, but stay for the loving tribute to James Whale's
09:43 Frankenstein. Before we unveil our top pick, here are some honorable mentions.
09:48 Re-animator. Everything goes wrong once a medical student brings corpses back to life.
09:54 "He's dead? Not anymore." Gremlins. This horror movie reminds us all to follow the mogwai rules.
10:00 Tucker and Dale versus evil. Two nice guys get pinned as villains in a series of wacky
10:12 miscommunications. "We'll go find your friends, you should relax. Tucker and Dale are on the case."
10:16 "Ain't that right, Tucker?" "Yeah." Yeah. Scary movie. This horror parody pokes fun at films such
10:24 as Scream and other classics. "Where am I?" "Um, you're- you're behind the couch."
10:33 "What? How do you know that?" Behind the Mask. The Rise of Leslie Vernon. A faux documentary that
10:41 winks to horror tropes and subverts a few others. "This man's name is Leslie Vernon."
10:47 "All right, we got it. Good job, Taylor." Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel

11:10 and switch on notifications. Number one, Evil Dead 2. Director Sam Raimi decided to go with
11:18 an unconventional approach for the sequel to his own movie. "It's got to be a road or something."
11:22 "Sure ain't no road. The hell you want to go up there for anyway?" Instead of continuing the
11:33 events of Evil Dead, the talented filmmaker and his collaborators altered the tone to something
11:37 much more comedic. "He was prophesied to have destroyed the evil." "Didn't do a very good job."
11:45 The same general plot of unlucky people visiting a spooky cabin remains,
11:49 but this time things get wilder with its camera work and acting.
11:53 "Groovy." Bruce Campbell's performance alone brings forth some incredible physical comedy
12:02 that includes fighting with his own hand. Changing the trajectory of the franchise,
12:07 Raimi created an even more entertaining and memorable remix on the horror genre.
12:11 This also prompted the dramatically different sequel Army of Darkness.
