00:00 the directions and directly you'll be directed in the right direction. Drink me."
00:05 Welcome to Ms. Mojo and today we're counting down our picks for the crazy and colorful
00:10 Disney movies that had us questioning what we were watching. "Come with me,
00:13 your friends can stay here." We'll be including both live action and animated features.
00:19 Number 10. Who framed Roger Rabbit?
00:27 "Kind of jumpy aren't you, Valiant? It's just Dumbo." It was always a weird concept to have
00:33 live action and animated characters interacting on screen, but Disney audiences embrace the art
00:38 form. Think classics like Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, or Pete's Dragon. However,
00:44 unlike its predecessors, Who Framed Roger Rabbit acknowledges that half of the cast are cartoons
00:49 and actually builds the plot around it. "You don't know how hard it is being a man,
00:55 looking at a woman looking the way you do." "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way." Set in an
01:02 alternative version of the golden age of Hollywood, the movie depicts humans and
01:05 toons as coexisting factions with adult problems and prejudices. It's all a bit of sensory overload
01:12 and the bad guy is the stuff of nightmares. "Remember me, Eddie? When I killed your brother,
01:19 I talked just like you!" Number 9. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. The Wind in the Willows
01:29 and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow aren't exactly a match made in heaven. Nevertheless, back in
01:34 the 40s, someone thought to pair them up and make a kids movie. It's not a crossover, just a double
01:39 feature, but still an unusual combo. "You see, Toad was far too clever and at the moment completely
01:46 mad." The Mr. Toad segment comes first, narrated by the classic British actor Basil Rathbone.
01:52 It definitely has its moments, but it doesn't prepare you for what comes next.
01:56 In Sleepy Hollow, scares and silliness abound as the headless horseman rides out. The Spectre's
02:12 high-pitched laugh is especially unnerving, but never fear, there are songs from Bing Crosby to
02:16 lighten the mood. "He swears to the longest day he's dead, he'll show them that he can get ahead."
02:24 Number 8. Make Mine Music. Like Fantasia, Make Mine Music is a collection of unconnected short
02:30 films set to music. Disney did a lot of this kind of thing in the 1940s, as most of the studio staff
02:36 had been drafted into the war effort. "Oh, Peter, what a hero. You too, Ivan. Everybody's happy,
02:43 except the wolf." The individual stories in the anthology are a bizarre selection. From classical
02:50 ballet, to teenagers at the malt shop, to a high-stakes baseball game, to two hats who fall
02:55 in love, there doesn't seem to be any underlying point. It's fun though, and the animation is clever
03:10 and colorful. The final story is the Piestrese Stance, a tragic tale of an operatic whale.
03:16 It's as surreal as it sounds, but also genuinely heartbreaking.
03:32 Number 7. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. This collection of charming tales isn't too
03:40 strange at first glance. We say hello again to our favorite cuddly characters as three featurettes
03:45 come together in one grand narrative. "Now obviously, this situation calls for an expert."
03:50 "Somebody call for an excavation expert? I'm not in the book, but I'm at your service." The movie
03:58 features several weird meta moments like gophers, or when the narrator gets involved to help out a
04:03 character in trouble. "Hey, who are you?" "I'm the narrator." "Oh, well please, for goodness sakes,
04:10 narrate me down from here." "Very well, hold on tight."
04:14 And who could forget the Heffalumps and Woozles sequence? That wasn't meta so much as it was
04:24 just insane. These smiling, psychedelic creatures are Pooh's biggest fear, and they terrified us too,
04:30 although it's hard to say why. The accompanying song was written by the Sherman Brothers,
04:34 who are also responsible for the "It's a Small World" theme song, so things are making sense.
04:40 "They come in ones and twosels, but if they so twosels, before your eyes you'll see them
04:45 multiply. Plum, plum, plum." Number six, The Shaggy D.A. Disney's 1959 movie The Shaggy Dog
04:53 tells the story of a boy who's cursed by an ancient ring, which causes him to transform
04:57 into an old English sheepdog. Weird though it was, the audience rolled with it, and the film's
05:02 success spawned a sequel, 17 years later. "You're getting a little gray, Dad." "Fellow citizens."
05:10 "No!" In The Shaggy D.A., the protagonist, Wilby, is all grown up. He's also practicing law and
05:24 taking on corruption in the government. "Come election day, you can vote those people out of
05:28 office and bring back respectability to this community." "Oh, thank you, Mr. Daniels." The
05:33 special effects are memorable to say the least, especially the dog transformations, which are a
05:38 joy to behold. This madcap adventure is delightfully random and filled with hilarious
05:43 set pieces that will make you question your sanity. It's loads of fun though. "Why didn't
05:47 you tell me you could skate? Boy, this is a real showstopper. A dog that talks and sings, skates,
05:52 drives." Number five, The Black Cauldron. Based on the Chronicles of Prydain novels and steeped
05:58 in Welsh mythology, The Black Cauldron is one of Disney's darkest animated films. It's also
06:04 totally bizarre. "Troubled thoughts weigh on your heart. Pray you now, those thoughts impart." For
06:12 one thing, the entire plot revolves around a pig who has visions. Then there's the terrifying
06:17 horned king, who plans to take over the world by capturing said pig and harnessing her powers.
06:22 "Arise, my messengers of death. Our time has arrived." There's something about the 80s style
06:32 of animation, combined with the medieval fantasy setting that creates a real sense of unease.
06:37 The characters and the storyline are unpredictable. And what is Gergie actually supposed to be?
06:43 "You're charming." "I'm pungent too." Number four, Fantasia. In which Disney film can you find
06:50 mushrooms, hippos, broomsticks, and evil spirits all dancing to a soundtrack of classical music.
06:56 It's Fantasia, of course. "So our picture opens with a series of impressions of the conductor
07:01 and the players. Then the music begins to suggest other things to your imagination." The 1940
07:06 anthology film has dazzled and terrified children for decades, and we couldn't omit it from this
07:11 list. Segments featuring fairies and centaurs are an explosion of color and creativity, but
07:16 sometimes the epic scale of the music takes the animation to a darker place. The most famous
07:21 sequence, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, features everyone's favorite mouse, but has a real sense
07:26 of threat and the night on Bald Mountain is nothing short of horrifying. Then there's Fantasia 2000,
07:32 a fitting homage to the original with equal fever dream potential.
07:42 Number three, The Brave Little Toaster franchise. A toaster, a radio, a lamp stand, an electric
07:48 blanket, and a vacuum cleaner set out on an adventure to find their missing owner.
07:52 Does this sound like the plot of a Disney movie or a nonsensical dream you once had?
07:56 If that wasn't strange enough, there's also The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars.
08:09 In the sequel, all our favorite appliances travel into space after their "little master,"
08:13 as they refer to him, is accidentally transported to the red planet.
08:17 "Are you telling us that you can actually come up with a way to get us to Mars?"
08:20 "Of course! Going to Mars is easy. The club bed in Cancun this time of year would take some
08:27 wrangling." There, the gang meet an army of discarded items under the command of a giant
08:32 fridge who is planning to blow up the earth. It all made sense when you were a kid.
08:36 "Oh, don't waste time reattaching me to the ceiling. Just leave me on the floor, face up!"
08:43 Number two, Return to Oz.
08:45 "This electrical marvel will make it possible for you to sleep again. And it will also get
08:54 rid of all those bad waking dreams that you've been telling me about."
08:59 Whatever possessed Disney to take the 1930s classic The Wizard of Oz and twist it into
09:04 something dark and disturbing, we'll never know. It's not exactly their brand. However,
09:09 the vibe is arguably closer to the original books, and the movie has become a cult classic.
09:14 "Where's the scarecrow? And what's happened to the Emerald City?"
09:18 "Answer her!"
09:19 After her aunt and uncle dump Dorothy in a psychiatric hospital,
09:23 she narrowly avoids electric shock treatment and escapes to an Oz that has fallen to evil forces.
09:28 Anyone who was exposed to Return to Oz as a child will know the terror of the wheelers
09:33 and the head-swapping Princess Mambi. Even Dorothy's friends have nightmare potential.

09:59 Number one, Alice in Wonderland.
10:02 Lewis Carroll's Alice novels have enchanted readers throughout the years,
10:05 and it's their weirdness that makes them wonderful. There have been multiple adaptations
10:09 of the story, each strange, surreal, and nonsensical. Disney's 1951 version is no exception.
10:16 "Well, after this I shall think nothing of falling down the stairs."
10:22 From the caterpillar to the queen of hearts, the mad hatter to the Cheshire cat,
10:26 we know what to expect from Carroll's quirky characters. Yet every scene still has a strange,
10:30 dreamlike quality that turns reality on its head.
10:33 "Can you stand on your head?"
10:35 Alice in Wonderland is a brightly colored onslaught to the senses.
10:39 But don't try to make it make sense. You have to embrace the madness.
10:43 "But I don't want to go among mad people."
10:46 "Oh, you can't help that. Most everyone's mad here."
