Alexa Stuart, Rising Tide, Newcastle Harbour Blockade
Transcript
00:00 So, Alexa it's been a pretty chill vibe throughout the blockade so far.
00:07 Is it something that you had planned?
00:10 Yeah, everything has gone really well according to plan.
00:13 We've had hundreds of people out on the water all weekend.
00:16 We've had thousands here on the beach and in the water.
00:20 And last night we succeeded in holding the channel of the world's largest cold port overnight.
00:28 So that meant there was about 350 people over the length of that time on the rafts and kayaks
00:35 holding that channel for the full time.
00:37 Do you feel as though you've achieved your goal?
00:39 I think it's been a pretty impressive effort so far.
00:42 We know that coal, millions of tonnes of coal is exported through this cold port every single
00:48 day except yesterday and today.
00:51 So we're expecting that we will have blockaded about eight coal ships, which is the equivalent
00:56 of about 500, half a million tonnes of coal.
01:01 What's been the highlight?
01:03 There's been a lot of highlights.
01:04 We've had some really incredible speakers, including some great Awabakal and Warramai
01:09 speakers, a coal miner who shared his experience of working in the mines and of having strong
01:17 concern about the climate crisis.
01:20 And yeah, a whole heap of speakers.
01:22 I think they have been incredible.
01:24 They've also had music and just happening out there at the moment is a youth open mic
01:28 where we've had a lot of the teenagers and young people here today having a chance to
01:33 share their fears about the future.
01:34 Yeah.
