Melbourne advocates march to eliminate violence against women

In Victoria, a walk against domestic violence is taking place this morning from the steps of parliament house. It's part of a global campaign to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls.

00:00 It is an opportunity for all Victorians to join us in acknowledging that family violence
00:07 doesn't have to be this way.
00:09 Violence against women is preventable and we're calling on all the Victorian community
00:13 to walk in solidarity with victim survivors today and to pledge to be part of the change
00:18 that's so desperately needed.
00:20 Just in the last week we've seen six women killed, five of which have been killed by
00:24 allegedly by men known to them.
00:26 And that's just the tip of the iceberg, the amount of harm and trauma that sits underneath
00:30 that for people that are living with domestic and family violence and recovering from.
00:34 It can be challenging but the absolute message is and the hopeful message is it doesn't have
00:38 to be this way.
00:39 This violence is preventable.
00:41 So we're asking all Australians to stick with us in that and to imagine a future where we
00:45 don't have this scale of violence.
