Why William Shatner Allegedly Blocked Kirstie Alley From Returning For 'Star Trek 3,' According To A Trek Documentarian

  • last year
Space may be the final frontier in the "Star Trek" world, but apparently, earthbound grudges can still travel quite keenly through the vastness of space. "Icons Unearthed" director Brian Volk-Weiss knows that firsthand, as an interview he conducted for another project involving Gene Roddenberry’s “Wagon Train to the stars” saw "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan’s" Kirstie Alley tell a story about how William Shatner allegedly blocked her from returning for the next film in the series that gave us some of the best sci-fi movies.

00:00 And then the other thing is, and it's again,
00:02 I've never looked at the movie again, the same way.
00:06 Rathacon, other than Star Wars,
00:08 is the most important movie of my entire life.
00:11 Conservatively seen it two or 300 times.
00:15 So I'm interviewing Kirstie Alley
00:17 and we're going back and forth, going back and forth.
00:21 And she was like, yeah, you know,
00:24 the whole movie, if you watch the film carefully,
00:29 you'll notice in the opening shot, I'm like,
00:33 hair's back, you know, very, very serious, you know,
00:37 balking, and by, you know, the end of the movie,
00:39 I'm like wearing eye shadow and my hair's down.
00:42 And I'm like, you know, I gotta be honest with you.
00:45 I never noticed that before.
00:46 She's like, yeah, I was this beautiful young girl.
00:50 I had just gotten to LA.
00:52 I was like 20 years old and I was playing this character
00:56 that like, all you can see are her hands
00:58 and from her neck up.
01:00 And she was like, I had this great body
01:02 and I was like a model.
01:04 And I was just playing this character that,
01:06 so every day I was trying to push the line further.
01:10 And I'm like, Kirstie, I am blown away.
01:12 I never noticed that.
01:13 She's like, you never noticed the scene
01:15 where I'm in the bath,
01:16 where I'm in a bathrobe in the elevator?
01:19 And I'm like, I gotta be honest with you, Kirstie,
01:22 I've never thought of that before.
01:24 That blows my mind.
01:26 You're absolutely right.
01:27 Why were you in a bathrobe?
01:29 And she basically said she had been like charming hair
01:33 and makeup, charming the wardrobe department,
01:38 kind of implied there was something going on
01:41 with Nicholas Myers, which I asked him about
01:44 and he denied completely.
01:47 But basically that's the reason why she's not
01:51 in Star Trek III, because William Shatner was so mad
01:56 about the whole thing, the bathrobe, everything,
02:00 that he made such a to-do about hiring her again
02:04 that they gave her an absolutely ludicrous financial offer
02:08 designed to get her to say no.
02:10 So that's why she's not.
02:11 So it's the first interview, to the best of our knowledge,
02:15 I always have to say,
02:16 I believe it to be her first interview ever about Star Trek.
