A fatal accident marred the 10th Annual CRA Weekend at Imperial Valley Speedway, on Sunday, 07 March 1965 at the California Mid-Winter Fair in El Centro, California.

36-year-old Ray Douglas was killed instantly when his sprint car flipped after hitting a lapped car on the final lap of the 6-lap Consolation Race. The car went end-over-end several times through a chainlink fence, and Douglas was thrown from the car.

Douglas started racing at Lincoln Park Stadium in Los Angeles in 1949. He had raced with the California Racing Association (CRA) since 1955 and was a regular competitor on the circuit. Douglas had set a new track record at Hanford Speedway just two weeks earlier.

Ray Douglas lived in San Gabriel, California, with his wife, Kay, and four children. He was buried in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.

Ray Douglas was reported to be the third CRA fatality in ten years on the half-mile oval of Imperial Valley Speedway. A month after his death, the CRA held a benefit movie party with the proceeds going to the family.
