A large storm could create headaches for folks planning to travel across the eastern United States in the days leading up to Thanksgiving.
Transcript
00:00 OK, that big stripe of red.
00:01 Not a good thing for
00:03 travelers on this Tuesday.
00:04 We have a big storm moving across
00:06 the country and unfortunately for
00:08 millions of people it means travel delays.
00:10 Now I do want to mention there's
00:12 a lot of green back to the West.
00:14 That's good news and we'll see
00:15 the green expand this week,
00:17 but let's focus on the storm here.
00:19 You can see that widespread rain
00:20 from the Great Lakes all the
00:22 way back to the Southeast.
00:23 Now the Southeast we do have some
00:25 pockets of severe weather possible
00:26 today as we look toward the
00:28 Carolina coastline even.
00:29 It's not widespread,
00:30 but the concern is there
00:31 this afternoon and evening,
00:32 so please make sure you are
00:34 staying tuned to the forecast
00:36 back into the Ohio Valley,
00:37 the Northeast and the Mid Atlantic.
00:39 Oh gosh, name it and we've got it
00:41 from heavy rain to that wintry mix.
00:43 Kind of a mushy,
00:44 uncomfortable situation as you get
00:46 across the northern tier of Pennsylvania,
00:47 back through the Allegheny Mountain
00:49 Range and even some icing already
00:51 reported across the panhandle of
00:52 Maryland and into West Virginia as
00:54 well out toward Mineral County.
00:55 And Garrett County.
00:56 So please make sure you're being
00:58 careful on the roads, bridges,
00:59 an overpass is that's where we expect the
01:02 biggest problems during the day today.
01:04 This whole thing starts to move to the
01:06 east as we get through this evening.
01:08 And really, by later this afternoon,
01:10 I think New York DC, Philadelphia.
01:12 You have an ugly commute home.
01:14 Heavy rain is going to be the biggest
01:16 concern and even some gusty winds at
01:18 times as the storm continues on to the east.
01:20 Not saying you should play hooky,
01:22 but if you didn't work from home today
01:24 and you have the ability to leave
01:26 the office a little bit early,
01:28 it's not such a bad idea in cities like New York.
01:30 You'll notice,
01:31 so it's not just the green.
01:32 Look at the pink and blue here as we
01:34 get back up into the mountains of New
01:36 York, the Adirondacks and the Catskills.
01:38 And that is we get into those New
01:39 England mountain ranges like the greens,
01:41 the whitens and the boundary mountains as well.
01:43 We have the concern for some icing,
01:45 especially back through Vermont,
01:46 New Hampshire,
01:46 Southern Maine,
01:47 and even as you get back up
01:48 toward the Adirondack Mountains.
01:50 Again,
01:50 bridges and overpasses are the biggest concern,
01:52 but I do think we could have some
01:54 problems even as you get to some
01:55 of the lower elevations.
01:56 Snowfall.
01:57 It's not something to write
01:58 home about necessarily.
01:59 It's not like we're seeing a
02:00 blockbuster winter storm for snow,
02:02 but we could get a half a foot to a
02:04 foot into the White Mountains of New
02:06 Hampshire, the boundary mountains of
02:07 Maine and then more widespread.
02:09 It's more in the way of a dusting
02:11 one to three inches in some spots.
02:13 I think a perfect example is Albany,
02:15 NY where we are looking at a
02:17 coding to an inch in your Accuweather
02:19 Wintercast great product here.
02:20 Of not just Accuweather.com,
02:21 but the Accuweather app.
02:22 But the snowfalls had a really
02:24 inconvenient time.
02:25 Look at that there from
02:26 5:00 PM to 11 PM Eastern time.
02:28 So we're looking really at rush hour
02:30 in the in Albany in the New York
02:32 State Capitol here, so make sure you
02:33 are taking it easy heading out the door.
02:35 And again, if you can leave early,
02:37 not a bad thing in terms of the ice.
02:39 Let's talk about this.
02:40 A trace to 500th of an inch.
02:42 You might look at that and say,
02:44 oh, who cares?
02:45 That's not a big deal, folks.
02:46 I say this all the time.
02:48 Ice is the great equalizer.
02:49 It does not matter how good you think
02:51 you are at driving in winter weather.
02:53 I'm from New England.
02:54 I grew up in it and I do not
02:56 think it takes us a tiny bit
02:58 to cause huge problems.
02:59 So tonight 9 PM to 10 PM we
03:00 could see some ice in Albany.
03:02 Make sure you're taking it
03:03 easy heading out the door.
03:05 If there's some good news in this forecast,
03:07 it's that the storm is up and out on Wednesday.
03:09 Now there's still some red back into
03:11 the mountains where we are expecting
03:13 more in the way of winter weather,
03:14 and even some showers and a couple
03:16 thunderstorms linger down the coastline
03:18 here in the yellow,
03:19 but lots of green on the travel map for
03:21 Wednesday. So if you have to leave,
03:23 rather it's today or Wednesday
03:24 for Thanksgiving travel.
03:25 I'd say Wednesday is definitely your better bet.
