Oscar Delp Talks Win over Tennessee, Previews Georgia Tech
Transcript
00:00 - Just raise your hand and I'll have somebody
00:02 bring a microphone around to you.
00:04 - Oscar, I think you've been in the state
00:15 most of your life.
00:16 What is your familiarity with this rivalry
00:20 and how does it settle on you
00:22 with all the different rivals you have in this program?
00:24 - Yeah, I mean, it's a huge one.
00:27 Best team in the state, state wins.
00:28 And Governor's Cup, I mean, it's a huge trophy
00:32 and it's a huge game that we look at every year
00:34 and I know they look at it every year.
00:36 And we got a lot of guys over there
00:38 that were with us previously, so it'll be a fun one.
00:41 - Oscar, I wanted to ask you about one of those guys,
00:44 Brett Scyther.
00:45 What did you learn being around him last year
00:47 and what was he like as a teammate?
00:49 - Yeah, I mean, he was always with me,
00:51 kind of brought me under his wing when I first got here.
00:54 Still one of my good friends to this day.
00:56 We talk all the time.
00:57 But he really just showed me kind of like
00:59 how to manage school and football and workouts
01:03 and everything and just kind of becoming
01:04 that college student out of high school
01:07 'cause he did the same thing that I went through.
01:09 And he just kind of showed me the ropes, really.
01:12 - Yeah, I guess just speak to the environment
01:23 you guys played in Saturday
01:24 and what the message was in the locker room
01:26 in terms of just handling the crowd noise
01:28 and all that stuff.
01:29 - Yeah, I mean, it was crazy.
01:30 It was a fun place to play at, huge stadium.
01:33 They had a great turnout and they were loud.
01:35 But I mean, we control the environment ultimately
01:37 and we don't really like to let those external factors
01:40 kind of dictate how we play or how we do our things.
01:44 I mean, we were prepared for it.
01:45 We practiced all week for it, known how it was gonna be.
01:48 And we just knew if we played our style of football,
01:50 everything would take care of itself.
01:52 - Oscar, what's the schedule like for this week
01:55 with Thanksgiving in it,
01:56 but still preparing for one of your top rivals?
01:59 - I mean, it's a normal schedule.
02:01 We're doing everything that we normally do for every game.
02:04 Think we'll get out maybe a little bit earlier
02:06 on Thanksgiving just for some guys to be able to get home
02:08 and have dinner with their families.
02:11 And we don't have school, but other than that,
02:13 I mean, it's a normal week for us.
02:14 - Oscar, what do you feel like it says
02:21 about y'all's offensive line that Saturday,
02:23 Tate gets hurt, Micah and Dylan come in,
02:26 and they continue to play as well as they did
02:28 after that injury?
02:30 - Yeah, I mean, we've known all year long,
02:31 I mean, we've got so much depth of the O-line
02:33 that we really have 10 starters on the O-line.
02:38 I mean, we can play whoever we want,
02:39 and there's not gonna be a drop-off
02:40 that you see like some lines in the country.
02:43 I mean, I think that Coach Searles and Coach Bobo
02:47 do a great job preparing all those guys.
02:49 And they push each other,
02:51 and having leaders like Sed and Tate,
02:53 and all those older guys on the line,
02:54 it helps a lot, and it gets the younger guys ready quicker.
02:57 - Sorry for bringing up something negative.
03:01 You had a drop in the game, it was pretty,
03:03 pretty of almost too open kind of situations.
03:07 But I just wonder internally,
03:08 is there like internal repercussions?
03:11 Obviously, that would be a negative grade
03:12 on that particular play, but like, I mean,
03:15 do you do something, just up-downs,
03:17 or something when you come in on Monday
03:19 and they review the tape, and just,
03:20 how do you approach it when something like that happens?
03:22 'Cause clearly, you didn't want to.
03:25 - I mean, it's just a mental drop.
03:26 I mean, everything was perfect in that play,
03:28 just I messed it up, it was on me.
03:30 And the only thing you can do is just put it behind you
03:33 and look to the next play.
03:33 I mean, I'm gonna do the same thing I do every week.
03:35 I'm gonna get on the drugs machine, I practice every day.
03:37 It's just one of those plays that I usually make,
03:40 and I just didn't make it,
03:41 and I just gotta fix it for the next time.
03:42 But we try not to think about that stuff.
03:44 We just kinda put it right past us,
03:45 'cause when you think about those drops
03:47 and let those kinda affect you,
03:49 it'll just carry over to the next play.
03:51 - Brock, going back to the Tennessee game,
03:55 we saw Brock get into something,
03:58 you were right there with him.
03:59 What happened?
04:00 You looked like you were about to jump into a scrape there.
04:02 - Yeah, I mean, Bowers doesn't usually freak out
04:04 under the pile, and I saw him start freaking out,
04:06 so I knew something was wrong,
04:07 so I just tried to get in there
04:08 and get him out as quickly as possible.
04:09 I didn't really know what was going on,
04:10 but didn't want anything to escalate any further.
04:13 Didn't want any flags thrown, for sure,
04:15 so we just tried to get in there and get him out.
04:17 - Can you say what happened?
04:19 - I think, I don't know, him and Henry,
04:20 another player got into it.
04:22 I don't really know exactly what happened,
04:24 but he didn't like what happened,
04:26 so I just kinda got him out of there.
04:28 - Oscar, right over here.
04:30 Oscar, I'm gonna ask you about Buster Faulkner,
04:32 you know, taking over the OC job at Tech.
04:35 I know he worked primarily with the quarterbacks
04:36 when he was here, but what kind of impact
04:38 did Buster make when he was here at UGA?
04:41 - Yeah, I mean, he was right side, Coach Munkin,
04:43 every practice with the offense,
04:45 and he was always giving all the receivers,
04:47 all the tight ends, everyone in offense,
04:49 his input, and just had to get better at practice.
04:51 And I know what kind of coach he is.
04:53 He's a great coach, and he's got a great office of mind,
04:55 so I knew he was gonna have them ready.
04:57 - Yeah, Oscar, Carson's been really consistent
05:01 in terms of statistical output
05:03 over the course of the season.
05:04 What has sort of allowed him to attain
05:06 that level of consistency on a week-in, week-out basis?
05:09 - I mean, I think just a guy like him,
05:10 he gets better every week.
05:11 I mean, he lets the tape speak for himself.
05:15 I mean, I think he's the best quarterback in the country.
05:17 Just, he prepares every week like it's his last game,
05:20 and he took advantage of his role this year,
05:23 and he's gonna keep taking advantage of it.
05:25 And I think he's gonna keep getting better every week,
05:27 just like he does every day in practice.
05:29 - Oscar, Kirby's talked about this team
05:32 being able to take a punch, and I mean,
05:34 he's even joking around now about
05:36 falling behind every game, but internally,
05:38 how do you feel about the team's identity,
05:40 and is there, I mean, is the goal to get as dominant
05:43 as the last two years' team's been?
05:45 I mean, you guys are undefeated,
05:46 but the fall behind thing is the thing
05:48 coach has talked about.
05:50 - Yeah, I mean, we're figuring out
05:52 more of our identity every day.
05:54 I mean, we just wanna be a physical, tough team
05:56 that goes in there every game
05:58 and tries to make the other team quit.
06:00 And I think that we just do it every day at practice.
06:03 I mean, just the way we practice every week
06:04 kinda speaks for itself.
06:05 We're not trying to compare ourselves
06:06 to any of the previous teams here,
06:08 or teams that have been here in the past.
06:10 I mean, we're just trying to create our own team
06:12 and our own identity every week.
06:15 - Thank you.
06:16 - Oscar, when you came to Georgia,
06:19 did you think you guys might lose a game
06:21 because that hasn't happened yet since you've been here?
06:22 And what's it like to be a part of a program
06:25 that's doing what you guys are doing?
06:28 - I don't know, I don't even think about that stuff.
06:30 I mean, you just go every week and try to win
06:32 and just stack wins on top of each other,
06:34 and things just take care of themselves.
06:36 I mean, I just know we gotta keep practicing like we do,
06:38 and just practice hard, play hard,
06:41 and really just buy into the culture.
06:43 Everything kinda takes care of itself.
06:46 - So I know y'all will watch more film on tech
06:48 throughout the week,
06:48 but just what's your first impression
06:50 of this Georgia Tech team
06:51 and what it's been able to do this season?
06:53 You know, ball eligible, first year under Brent Key.
06:55 - Yeah, I mean, they're a great team.
06:57 It's gonna be a dogfight.
06:58 We know they're gonna bring their best game.
07:00 They've got really explosive offense.
07:02 They've got some big players on defense,
07:04 and they got a lot of guys
07:05 that we've had previously in our program.
07:07 And I just know how Coach Volkner's run on their offense
07:11 is kinda similar to ours.
07:13 And I mean, they're an explosive team,
07:14 and they've won their last two games.
07:16 And I mean, they're gonna come ready to play on Saturday.
07:19 - This is sort of a random question,
07:22 but what are your rules about phones,
07:25 like in meetings or, you know,
07:28 when you're in the building?
07:30 - I mean, it's really just a given rule.
07:32 I mean, when we're in meetings and stuff,
07:34 no one has their phones with them.
07:35 Everyone's just kinda locked in.
07:37 It's almost like being at school, being in class.
07:38 I mean, you're not gonna have your phone out.
07:40 I mean, when you're at the facility by yourself,
07:42 not doing anything, I mean,
07:43 you can have your phone with you at all times and everything.
07:45 I mean, we don't film in the locker room
07:46 or any stuff like that,
07:47 but really it's just when you go into meetings
07:49 and go into practice, no one has their phones.
07:51 It's just kind of a given.
07:52 - Coach Bobo obviously has a different personality
08:01 than Coach Munkin.
08:02 Can you give us any idea what his pregame speeches
08:05 and motivational speeches are like?
08:07 - Yeah, I mean, they're straight juice.
08:09 I mean, he gets us fired up for the games
08:12 and after the meetings.
08:13 And I mean, he speaks right from the heart
08:15 and he really cares about us.
08:17 And you can tell that he really loves us
08:18 and loves us as an offense, as a team.
08:20 And it's like we're in a big family.
08:23 So, I mean, we really care about him and he cares about us.
08:26 And we all just go out there every day
08:28 to play for each other and just are inside these walls,
08:31 players inside these walls.
08:33 - Time for two more questions.
08:35 - Yeah, I see Mike Carson was getting the ball out
08:37 really quickly Saturday.
08:38 A couple of balls jumped on Brock pretty quickly.
08:41 Have you ever been running around and been like,
08:44 all right, I need to snap my head around much faster.
08:46 Have you ever caught one off the face,
08:48 essentially is what I'm asking you?
08:49 'Cause these quarterbacks nowadays
08:50 are throwing the ball really, really quickly
08:52 and on top of you.
08:53 - Oh yeah, I mean, definitely.
08:53 I mean, it's all part of timing
08:55 and that's what we work at every day in practice.
08:57 In different teams you play, you got to speed things up
09:00 or kind of slow things down,
09:01 just depending on who you're going against
09:02 and the personality you're going against.
09:03 And just really kind of, you find that rhythm
09:06 with you and your quarterback, especially Carson,
09:08 'cause everything we do at practice,
09:09 I mean, he's always going to put the ball there
09:10 at the right time in the right spot.
09:12 And it's great to have a quarterback like that.
09:14 And we just kind of got to adjust to it and just kind of,
09:17 I mean, he's going to make us right, so.
09:19 - Another Carson question,
09:22 but you said you thought he was the best quarterback
09:24 in the country and it's interesting,
09:26 but he's not going to stump for himself.
09:29 But in the whole Heisman conversation,
09:31 we all understand why his numbers aren't what those are
09:33 because of the way you play.
09:34 But do you feel like your quarterback
09:37 should be in that, at least invited to New York?
09:40 - Yeah, I mean, definitely.
09:41 I mean, you see what he does on film every day.
09:44 And I think his film speaks for itself.
09:46 And I mean, it's not like his stats are bad.
09:49 I mean, he's got,
09:50 you can look at quarterbacks that have been there previously.
09:52 And I mean, I think he deserves a spot in New York.
09:54 - Thank you, officer.
09:56 - Thank you.
