Jim Fitzgerald's Fatal Crash @ St. Petersburg 1987 (Aftermath)

Jim Fitzgerald died at the accident site, it is believed, of a high G sidewise impact (at the time HANS devices was not patented yet) causing him head and neck injuries. Recently, however, one of Jim's crew members reported that Jim was seen to slump forward in his seat as he went past the pits the last time before hitting the turn one wall, suggesting he was losing consciousness from some medical problem.

Jim is the winningest driver in SCCA National Club Racing, with more than 350 victories. He won two National Championships at SCCA Runoffs, in 1970 driving a Datsun SLR 311, and in 1981 driving a Datsun 280ZX.

He is a member of the 2011 SCCA Hall of Fame.
