Syracuse head coach discusses the loss to Georgia Tech.

00:00 >> All right, we're gonna start with a brief opening statement from Coach,
00:03 then we'll take questions.
00:04 Raise your hand if you have a question, we'll come around.
00:07 >> Obviously disappointed, hat goes off to Coach Keith.
00:10 That was a good, good football game against a good, good football team.
00:14 They have some extremely explosive players.
00:17 And congratulations, they're gonna get an opportunity to go bowling.
00:21 We hope that we have that same opportunity.
00:23 We have one more game left at our place.
00:25 We're going back to the dome.
00:26 We gotta play a really good Wake Forest team that we've had trouble with over
00:30 the years.
00:30 We expect our people to be there, and we expect them to be loud and
00:34 crazy and to send our seniors off the right way.
00:37 And there's no place like dome and we can't wait to get back there.
00:42 Questions?
00:43 >> Start with Emily in front.
00:43 >> Do you know last play, offensive play of the game for
00:47 you guys to give it to Luke and Rosen interception.
00:50 Just curious what led to the decision to put him in there and
00:53 have him attempt that pass?
00:55 >> He knows our two minute offense the best out of the quarterbacks that are
00:57 healthy to run it.
00:59 >> So that was, it was just like a two minute drill and he's the most veteran.
01:02 Brayden played kind of in the role that we saw Garrett in last week,
01:06 just a little, I guess, less.
01:08 What led to him playing there versus letting Garrett play like he did last week?
01:12 >> Some of those guys are not as healthy.
01:14 We're still waiting for those guys to get healthy so
01:16 they can do the things that they used to do.
01:18 >> So Garrett, would you say Garrett was less healthy this week than he had been
01:22 playing last week?
01:22 >> Yes.
01:24 >> Jesse.
01:25 >> Coach, why did it take till the fourth quarter to try pass more than ten yards?
01:30 >> Because some of the other stuff was really good and
01:32 sometimes we didn't have the ball.
01:34 Our big thing is we're gonna run the football,
01:36 we're gonna keep the ball in the hands of our people that we think are good.
01:38 We did throw a lot of passes.
01:40 We're not trying to throw them less than ten yards.
01:42 We just got tackled before we could get to ten yards.
01:45 So when we throw that, we expect them to go all the way just like the runs.
01:51 >> Coach, back to Brady, you decided to use him as the wide receiver in that
01:55 Garrett Schroeder role.
01:55 Was there ever a discussion about keeping that two wide receiver or
01:59 why did you want to be a quarterback out there playing in that hybrid role?
02:02 >> Anytime you have a quarterback on the field, it affects the cause of the defense.
02:05 [BLANK_AUDIO]
02:10 >> Fourth and third, you send Brady on to take a 50 yarder.
02:14 I know you have said that you have seen him hit longer than that.
02:18 We have yet to see him hit longer than that.
02:20 Just what was the decision making there?
02:22 Was it just you felt confident he could get it or why not go for-
02:25 >> Once again, it was fourth and
02:27 three was early in the first half if I'm not mistaken.
02:29 We have an opportunity to close that distance.
02:32 I believe the kick was wide right.
02:34 The kick was not short.
02:36 So it was just a matter of him getting it to the uprights,
02:38 which we've seen him do before.
02:40 >> A lot of work for Dan and Laquan today.
02:44 How are they feeling?
02:45 >> They're banged up.
02:46 They feel like they've been used.
02:49 [BLANK_AUDIO]
02:53 >> Coach, obviously the last drive for Georgia Tech offensively before
02:57 the interception took a lot of time off the clock.
03:03 What was the difference that you feel in that drive compared to a handful
03:07 before where your defense got stopped in the second half?
03:12 >> There were some mistakes made in the drive.
03:15 Some calls were made and we didn't, what we call close a call.
03:20 Call is open, then you gotta close it.
03:21 You gotta set a defense, you gotta call it.
03:23 And then you close that call.
03:25 And some of those calls were left open,
03:26 which is the reason why some of those quarterback runs were going up the middle.
03:29 >> A lot of success in the third quarter compared to what you guys have been able
03:35 to do on both sides of the ball in the first and second.
03:37 Is that something that you can credit directly to your coaching staff,
03:40 maybe changes at halftime?
03:42 Or was Georgia Tech just getting a little worn down with what you guys were doing?
03:45 >> I think it was a little bit of both.
03:46 I think, Emily, your question's good.
03:48 I think there was some adjustments.
03:49 But also, the way we're playing ball eventually starts to wear people down.
03:54 Main thing is making sure they didn't get away from us.
03:57 They got away from us a little bit, but we closed that distance to make it a game.
04:01 Closed that gap to make it a game.
04:02 And it was just disappointing that we couldn't get that final touchdown in
04:05 there.
04:06 >> Did Georgia Tech, having kind of one of the worst rushing defenses in
04:11 the conference right now, play into your decision to run this style of offense
04:15 again, or was it solely based on who you had available?
04:18 >> Availability.
04:19 >> Coach, before that final interception, nine penalties for 70 yards.
04:26 Is there one part of the game that you think was contributing to that most?
04:29 >> There was a lot of stuff going on out there.
04:33 Or what you guys call it, the business.
04:35 There was a lot of people giving each other the business out there.
04:38 And sometimes the referees see it, and sometimes they don't.
04:40 There were some things that I was surprised the referees saw,
04:43 because they normally don't see that stuff.
04:45 So my hats go off to them for some of that stuff.
04:48 And there were some other things that happened that may not have been happening
04:50 exactly how they saw it, but they called it that way.
04:53 And that's part of the game.
04:54 >> Emily.
04:55 >> What did you see on that early hit on the quint that I think a lot of people
04:59 thought was a late hit, he was in the end zone, and then the call on Umari that was
05:04 called?
05:06 >> That was away from me.
05:07 That was on their sideline.
05:09 I did not get a great view of that.
05:10 And I have to go back and watch the tape, because I need to go back and
05:15 watch the tape on that before I talk about it,
05:17 cuz I really did not have a good sightline on it on the football field.
05:20 >> Say a couple more for coach.
05:22 Right there.
05:24 >> In terms of a positive note, you guys came back from being down 24 to 3 to make
05:29 this a competitive game.
05:30 What do you think about your team enabled them to stay in,
05:33 even despite a big deficit?
05:35 >> I think there's a lot of fight in this football team.
05:37 And then when you think about how we've gone to, I'm not gonna say that word.
05:43 That's the words I don't say because I'm a military kid.
05:45 The things that we've had to do in the last two games to be able to move the ball
05:49 and score points, and for them to be able to understand that that's a disadvantage.
05:54 But we're gonna turn it into an advantage, and
05:56 we're gonna turn a negative and turn it into a positive.
05:59 I think they've been in, obviously, both games.
06:01 We won one, we lost one, but the way they're fighting and
06:04 the way they're competing and staying together, I think I'm really proud of them.
06:08 >> Last question for coach, Jesse.
06:10 Coach, you've mentioned you're a military kid.
06:11 Did you catch any of the military honors and
06:14 celebration throughout the game and before?
06:16 >> In this game?
06:17 >> Yeah.
06:19 >> If there was one, I missed it.
06:20 I'm so locked in.
06:22 You could say my name and I wouldn't hear it in a football game.
06:24 I'm sorry about that.
06:25 So no, I apologize.
06:28 But I'm very thankful for all they do.
06:31 There's no doubt about it.
06:33 I've lived that life, and it's not an easy life,
06:35 especially with all the stuff that's going around the world right now.
06:37 >> All right, thanks, coach.
06:40 >> Thank you, guys.
