00:00 A huge AEW sign-in announcement actually lives up to expectations?
00:04 Did MJF's night-long injury storyline jump the shark?
00:08 And did Swerve Strickland and Hangman Page just have match of the year?
00:13 I'm Oli Davis, and this is my review of AEW Full Gear 2023… in about 10 minutes.
00:27 The Zero Hour pre-show coincidentally opened the exact same way as our Name Every Member
00:31 of Bullet Club Survival Series special did… on Jeff Jarrett.
00:35 Ok, ok, well I'm going to start with obviously the biggest name, one of the OGs, Jeff Jarrett.
00:52 Double J was in Jay Lethal's corner, who was fighting Eddie Kingston for the ROH World
00:57 Championship.
00:58 It was a Team TNA match, so everyone interfered, but Eddie's friend turned enemy turned friend
01:02 again Ortiz appeared to even the odds and help Kingston retain.
01:05 A standard opener to liven up the crowd.
01:08 Far more interesting was Kingston's announcement later on.
01:11 He'll be entering the Continental Classic, where he'll also be putting both his ROH
01:16 World and New Japan's Strong Openweight Championships on the line in every match he
01:21 wrestles.
01:22 But because this is AEW, that isn't enough titles.
01:26 The tournament winner will also become the first ever Continental Champion, with Khan
01:32 announcing they'll become a Triple Crown Champion of World's End.
01:36 But if Eddie's defending his belt in each of his tournament matches, couldn't he be
01:40 beaten and lose them to someone then, and then that new champion might not make it through
01:45 to the final?
01:46 How would those belts still be on the line?
01:47 Oh no, I've gone cross-eyed.
01:49 Claudio Castagnoli then beat Buddy Matthews, two very slick professional wrestlers who
01:53 had a very slick professional wrestling match.
01:56 Claudio won with the Sharpshooter, and Matthews pushed past him afterwards.
01:59 On a five hour show, I'm not sure this needed to be here.
02:02 The kickoff show ended on the only match that really counted - MJF teaming with Samoa Joe
02:06 to defend the ROH tag titles against the Guns.
02:10 It was a fun match, but it was the same deal as All In and WrestleDream.
02:14 A very well built up feud, which is underserved by a short, mostly comedy match.
02:18 Just like Ozzy Open and The Righteous, I don't see the Guns getting much elevation here.
02:23 And then came…
02:25 SHENANIGANS.
02:27 Adam Cole made his first in-person AEW appearance in months, the shock of his entrance music
02:33 being enough to distract the Guns, helping Joe lock in the Coquina Clutch to win.
02:36 Joe shook MJF's hand in victory, reminding him of that deal with the Devil, his future
02:41 title shot.
02:42 The Guns then took out MJF's left knee with a chair.
02:45 Max was stretched out, put in an ambulance, and driven off as he screamed to Cole "don't
02:50 let them take my championship".
02:51 At first, I was enthralled.
02:54 What a great soap opera hook, minutes before the main show starts.
02:57 I must buy the pay-per-view to find out what happens next.
03:00 I love a night-long narrative.
03:02 This is like the Attitude Era.
03:04 But the Attitude Era wasn't all Supermain eventers and great soap opera.
03:08 It was also full of plot holes.
03:11 The main card opened with the Patriarchy vs Sting's Coalition.
03:15 A choir of all Christian's adopted children sang his theme tune in an awesome entrance.
03:19 Unfortunately, they weren't all wearing turtlenecks.
03:22 This was a brilliantly fun opener, with Flair chopping Christian, an awesome derby bump
03:26 from Luchasaurus chokeslamming him over the top rope onto the apron, and Sting doing his
03:32 falling splash.
03:33 As opposed to a flying splash.
03:36 Christian accidentally hit Luchasaurus with the belt, and then ran away from Adam Copeland
03:40 through the crowd, letting Edge get the pin.
03:42 Cage and Copeland never touched, saving that for the next match.
03:45 In which case, I prefer them not to have gotten physical in the build either.
03:49 The Big World title drama then got its big twist.
03:52 Tony Schiavone was about to announce the main event was off, meaning Jey White would de
03:57 facto become the AEW World Champion.
04:00 But Adam Cole interrupted to announce he'll be taking MJF's place.
04:05 It was awesome, but also…
04:08 What?
04:10 Cole's expressions and performance are amazing, but not enough to get past the visual that
04:15 he's likely in worse shape than MJF.
04:17 How could AEW's medical team allow that?
04:20 Also, AEW precedent is to crown interim World Champions.
04:23 It would make it more believable if Tony was about to announce that, rather than Max being
04:27 totally stripped of the belt.
04:29 And thirdly, why did Joe just let Max get beaten up earlier?
04:32 If MJF isn't the champion, surely there's no one there to honour his title shot.
04:37 Just like their Dynamite go-home angle, Orange Cassidy's punches to the head weren't
04:41 very effective against Moxley.
04:42 He just worked through them.
04:43 I guess in kayfabe, concussions only make Mox's head stronger.
04:47 Instead, Cassidy used Mox's own offence against him, doing the back rake and bike
04:51 spot on the turnbuckle, bringing back loads of Moxley blood.
04:54 Cassidy won after multiple orange punches, an exposed turnbuckle and a beach break, but
04:59 at 12 minutes, it didn't feel as epic as their first encounter.
05:02 Whereas that All Out main event really made me want to see a rematch, this one felt more
05:06 like a decisive victory.
05:08 Perhaps they'll still have a third encounter, as they're now one apiece.
05:11 The shortest match on the main card was more to service Tony Storm's gimmick than serve
05:15 as a fitting end to Shida's latest transitional reign.
05:18 Tony used a shoe, Shida took out Luthor and Storm won with her loaded butt, putting a
05:24 frying pan in her tights for the running hip attack.
05:27 Tony received a black and white celebration, as Mariah May gave her flowers.
05:30 This was comfortably the worst thing on the show.
05:33 The four way ladder match for the tag titles was just a whole load of crazy fun.
05:36 Big Bill and Brodie King facing off to meet chance, Cash Wheeler hitting a second rope
05:40 piledriver onto Malakai Black on a ladder, Brodie crashing a gonzo bomb on Jalisco onto
05:46 a ladder bridge.
05:47 Ricky Starks unhooked the titles to retain.
05:49 Sky Blue and Julia Hart decided to team up against the much taller Chris Statlander in
05:53 their TBS title match, but unfortunately not using my suggestion by getting on each other's
05:57 shoulders to be Muppet Man.
05:59 The unholy alliance didn't last long, as Julia turned on Blue.
06:02 The tension between them following their long-running story was the second best thing in this match.
06:07 Because the best was the shocking title win for Julia Hart.
06:10 Statlander hit Saturday Night Fever on Blue, but Hart pushed Chris off to get the win herself.
06:15 Julia has been so impressive recently, and deservedly gotten herself over, right at the
06:20 moment when Statlander's reign had become stale.
06:22 Tony Schiavone then revealed the much-hyped new AEW signing… the guy who's been wrestling
06:31 already in AEW for over a year anyway… Will Ospreay.
06:35 I'm being glib.
06:36 This is one of those times that AEW delivered on expectations.
06:40 Ospreay admitted in his unique Bruvz style that it won't happen right away, as he's
06:44 got to finish up in New Japan, but he will be All Elite on the road to Revolution - so
06:49 around January/February time - telling Tony Khan to line up the best challengers because
06:54 he wants to do something big at Wembley's All In.
06:57 This is a great coup for AEW, and I love how they're building Wembley this far in advance.
07:02 But you don't have to wait until next August to enjoy great wrestling crowds in London.
07:06 Because this coming weekend, we're hosting our Survivor Series Watch Party!
07:10 Here's a trailer to encourage you to buy tickets.

08:06 In came our match of the year contender Swerve Strickland vs Hangman Page, in a Texas Death
08:14 Match stipulation that just became a vehicle to show the carnal nature of man.
08:18 Hangman twisted by vengeance, plummeted to his most violent, health and safety and basic
08:24 hygiene disregarding depths.
08:27 Swerve hit a 450 on Hangman covered in broken glass.
08:30 Hangman shot staples into Swerve's chest and face.
08:33 Swerve hit a Death Valley Driver on a cinder block on the apron.
08:37 As if a cinder block wasn't hard enough, he had to do it on the hardest part of the
08:42 ring.
08:43 But it's another spot I'll likely have to enter therapy for.
08:46 One of the most depraved things I've ever seen in a wrestling ring.
08:50 Hangman Page laying beneath Swerve's head and drinking the blood dripping off his face.
08:57 That moment took me, and the crowd by the sound of it, to some new weird place of violent
09:02 depravity.
09:03 Some carnal base instinct warfare.
09:05 In that moment, I believed Hangman was genuinely beating Swerve for what Strickland did to
09:10 his family.
09:11 That spot overrode the rational part of my brain.
09:15 I became so invested, I forgot I was watching a scripted wrestling match, and they hooked
09:20 me in for the rest of their half hour bout.
09:22 Just like Hangman had his mouth open to drink some blood, my mouth was hanging open at their
09:27 25 minutes of hardcore insanity.
09:30 They beat ten count after ten count, Hangman fought off Brian Cage and Prince Nana, but
09:35 just like how Page beat Moxley, Swerve choked the Hangman out by hanging him, wrapping a
09:41 chain around his neck and looping it around the ring post and yanking back.
09:46 There have been more violent matches.
09:48 There's been sicker spots.
09:50 Few have combined the two with the emotional intensity of this feud.
09:55 Once again, Swerve vs Hangman is match of the night.
09:59 It's not often you doubt the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega's ability to follow a match,
10:03 but that's how good Hangman's Swerve was.
10:05 It took them about ten minutes to get the crowd properly into the action.
10:08 The story was the Bucks working over Jericho's arm, because they don't want him to be friends
10:12 with Kenny anymore.
10:13 I'm starting to think the Elite are pretty toxic for each other.
10:16 And if the Bucks win, Jericho and Kenny would have to break up.
10:20 Come on Bucks, I've never been more of a fan.
10:22 Because it's a story that would work much better, you see, if I was into Jericho and
10:26 his relationship with Omega.
10:27 But I just want Omega to be all awesome as a singles wrestler again, and Jericho is about
10:33 a year overdue for a break from our screens.
10:35 They've obviously got a longer running story in mind, which is why Kenny teased hitting
10:39 a V-Trigger on Jericho - an obviously foreshadowing spot to when they split months down the line
10:44 and have a singles feud.
10:45 I just got super excited and wanted him to break up and turn heel now.
10:49 The Bucks, though, went even more heel, low blowing Jericho first, and also low blowing
10:53 their friend Kenny.
10:54 But they got too sucked into their hatred of Chris, letting Omega win with a one-winged
10:58 Angel.
10:59 The Bucks threw a tantrum around the ring afterwards, as Kenny still has their number.
11:03 Because it seems like just anyone could defend anyone else's belt these days, Adam Cole
11:07 hobbled down on crutches to defend MJF's World Championship against Jey White - after
11:11 Samoa Joe had defended Adam Cole's ROH tag team titles with MJF four hours-oh no I've
11:17 gone cross-eyed again.
11:19 In true Attitude Era style, MJF burst back onto the scene, driving a presumably stolen
11:24 ambulance to fight instead.
11:25 Even amongst the silliness, it was heartwarming to see Cole and Max reunited.
11:29 What followed was a half hour long working over of MJF's left knee using all the Bullet
11:33 Club Gold tactics.
11:35 The guns were eventually ejected from ringside, and Cole screwed up not just once, but two
11:39 separate weapon spots.
11:41 First White took the ROH tag title from him to use on MJF, and then he placed Max's
11:46 diamond ring on the canvas for White to get to it first.
11:49 Have we not learned anything from Santos Escobar?
11:52 That, combined with the commentators saying Cole might actually be a distraction for Max
11:56 at ringside, and the Figure Four spot later where Adam teased throwing in the towel, put
12:01 Cole's friendship with MJF back in doubt.
12:03 There was no Devil appearance on this show.
12:06 Maybe it's because the person who it is, Adam Cole, was physically there.
12:11 The two haven't yet crossed over.
12:13 Max eventually used the diamond ring to hit White and retain, getting not just his best
12:17 friend back, but also his world title.
12:19 It was still a predictable result, and the soap opera shenanigans undermine the singles
12:23 grudge match intensity.
12:24 There's definitely an argument to say this was massively overbooked for the show, but
12:28 by the end with MJF getting the babyface victory, it's hard not to smile ear to ear.
12:33 AEW Full Gear is 85%.
12:36 Now go watch us fantasy book the end of Asuka's streak.
