00:33 >> Skiing is fast becoming the most popular of all winter sports.
00:39 And small wonder, for there is no finer conquest than that of a mountain clad
00:45 in its glorious winter mantle of glittering white.
00:49 Skiing, pronounced sheeing, is a sport that appeals especially to the rugged,
00:57 wide awake, out of doors individual.
01:00 [ Bell Ringing ]
01:09 Who leaps from his bed at sunup, enjoys anticipation
01:13 to the thrills that lie in store for him.
01:16 The first essential is the correct equipment.
01:19 Of primary importance is the undergarment.
01:22 All wool in the yard wise, either one or two piece, rock ribbed,
01:26 pre-shrunk, and form fitting.
01:28 [ Music ]
01:33 The skis, shees, should be made of seasoned hickory and free from knot holes and turbines.
01:44 The shoes should be boxed toed, large enough for at least two pairs of socks,
01:49 yet comfortable enough to wiggle your toes slightly.
01:53 [ Squeaking ]
01:55 And now, now, now!
02:00 [ Drum Roll ]
02:02 [ Whistle Blowing ]
02:04 [ Music ]
02:07 The choice of a sweater should reflect the taste of the true sportsman.
02:12 In other words, studied carelessness.
02:17 For after all, clothes do make the man.
02:21 [ Music ]
02:28 Now we are completely dressed.
02:33 With the exception of the trousers.
02:37 [ Music ]
02:43 The trousers should be light, snow repellent, with a hard, smooth finish.
02:48 They should fit snugly, yet allow plenty of room at the hips, shoulders, and the knees.
02:55 [ Music ]
03:04 Now we are all set and ready to conquer the heights.
03:10 Go to a mountain, quote,
03:13 "Oh, kingly mountain draped in royal raiment white,
03:18 with countless jewels befect in dazzling splendor,
03:23 yet silent as the night," unquote.
03:28 Oh, yes, and if you should smell something out of the ordinary, don't be alarmed.
03:34 It is only fresh air.
03:36 [ Whistle Blowing ]
03:37 [ Drum Roll ]
03:41 Upon reaching the summit, our first step is the turn into position.
03:46 This is accomplished by the kick turn.
03:49 One, knees and skis close together.
03:52 Two, firm support on both toes.
03:55 Now a decided kick of left leg and ski forward and high.
04:00 Three, bring ski down parallel, but with the point facing in the opposite direction.
04:06 Four, swing the other ski around and drop it parallel to the first ski.
04:11 This is really quite simple and can be easily mastered by the greenest amateur.
04:17 [ Music ]
04:20 This is indeed fortunate.
04:23 How technically to get up.
04:26 First, get the sheaths together.
04:28 Place them parallel and across the down slope to prevent slipping.
04:33 Then place both poles across your body.
04:36 Now pull your skis under your body and gently push up.
04:40 [ Music ]
04:42 You are now in an upright position.
04:45 [ Whistle Blowing ]
04:47 For the first attempt, choose a gentle slope.
04:50 We start with a joyous galander sprung, or hop, and we are up.
04:55 [ Music ]
05:01 Always keep the eyes to the front, because objects sometimes appear with amazing suddenness.
05:07 [ Music ]
05:15 Skiing is really quite simple once you get the hang of it.
05:21 The most popular method of ascent is the herringbone, used on short climbs, but not on too steep a slope.
05:28 The name herringbone is derived from the neat symmetrical pattern left in the snow.
05:33 [ Music ]
05:37 Now to change direction at high speed.
05:40 First, the jump turn.
05:42 This looks difficult.
05:44 Once learned, however, it becomes extremely simple.
05:47 [ Music ]
05:53 [ Whistle Blowing ]
05:55 [ Music ]
06:02 The shush, or downhill run.
06:04 It is the quickest way to get to the bottom.
06:07 It is so named because of its peculiar sound.
06:10 Shush!
06:12 [ Music ]
06:17 [ Music ]
06:22 The slow off, or downhill racing through flag, could only be attempted by an expert skier.
06:29 [ Music ]
06:37 [ Music ]
06:43 [ Music ]
06:47 And now that thrill of thrills, the ultimate goal of every ambitious skier, the ski jump.
06:54 [ Music ]
06:55 [ Cheering ]
07:00 Ever faster and faster, a vertical human bullet.
07:04 Ah, the exhilaration of it.
07:06 The flight through the air with the grace and beauty of a bird on the wing.
07:10 Perfectly balanced.
07:12 The complete master of his own destiny.
07:17 [ Cheering ]
07:19 [ Music ]
07:37 After a vigorous day in the open, the skier never has any trouble falling to sleep.
