00:00 "Righteous indignation is typically defined as the reactive emotion of anger over perceived
00:05 mistreatment, insults, or malice of another."
00:08 This is a feeling many wrestling fans have been made to feel over the years because of
00:11 the continued incompetence of WWE, and I don't know about you, but sometimes I need that
00:16 feeling, that outlet for my rage.
00:19 Yes, therapy would be more constructive, thank you for asking, but this is why it is so annoying
00:25 when WWE manages to benefit from their own incompetence.
00:29 I need my rage outlet, dammit!
00:31 I can't go back to playing Overwatch, I can't go back!
00:35 F*** Widowmaker bulls***!
00:36 Anyway, what was I saying?
00:38 WWE from time to time would luck into a fantastic moment or swelling of fan support for one
00:43 wrestler or a group in particular because seeing WWE fumble the booking bag with Daniel
00:48 Bryan one more time was simply the last straw.
00:51 Well here we will look at when WWE got bailed out when they didn't deserve to be.
00:54 I'm the righteously indignant Tempest hailing from partsFUNknown, and these are 10 times
00:59 WWE benefited from their bad booking.

01:13 Number 10, Damien Mizdow Do you remember Damien Mizdow?
01:17 The guy that was Mr. Money in the Bank a year earlier and was one of the great intellectual
01:21 heels of the PG era?
01:22 Well WWE sure pulled the plug on his ascent hard when they fed him and the contract to
01:26 John Cena on an episode of Raw in late 2013.
01:29 From there, things wouldn't pick up for old Damien until it appeared to hit rock bottom
01:33 for him in 2014.
01:35 Not literally of course, that would be on the January 11th, 2013 Smackdown.
01:39 But at the end of 2014, Damien's standout was paired with The Miz as his stunt devil.
01:45 This damning idea that saw Damien play second fiddle to The Miz wasn't exactly where people
01:49 would have thought he would be a year out from cashing in the Money in the Bank briefcase,
01:53 but hot dog if the newly dubbed Damien Mizdow didn't put 110% effort into this ridiculous
02:00 gimmick.
02:01 He would mimic Miz's every move while wrestling and got so much more over with the audience
02:05 than he had ever been previously.
02:07 There's no way the people in charge could have thought this gimmick would have worked
02:10 as well as it did as evidenced by their chance to double down on it after WrestleMania 31
02:15 with Mizdow wrestling Miz for the right to be called The Miz.
02:19 He should have won!
02:20 He'd have been such a better Miz than The Miz.
02:23 But he didn't and he was released a year later.
02:26 That run he had however, while it lasted, mwah!
02:29 Brilliance.
02:30 9.
02:31 The Montreal Screwjob
02:33 On one hand, you could argue that purely in a kayfabe sense, booking Shawn Michaels vs.
02:37 Bret Hart for Survivor Series 1997 was a fine idea.
02:41 That sure seemed like the direction to go after Summerslam, but then you remembered
02:44 that this kayfabe business exists in a very not kayfabe world and then you realized that
02:49 this was very bad booking indeed.
02:51 I won't bore you with the details of the Montreal Screwjob, if you haven't heard of it, what
02:55 are you doing here?
02:56 But the long-term benefits of this famous bit of wrestling backstabbing truly are incalculable.
03:01 Born out of this bit of nonsense was the Mr. McMahon character, the perfect antagonist
03:06 to the emerging top babyface Steve Austin.
03:09 Without this development, it is difficult to say whether the WWF would have beaten WCW
03:13 in the Monday Night War at all.
03:14 The Austin McMahon rivalry remains one of the most important rivalries in WWE history,
03:19 and it wouldn't have happened without that night in Montreal making Vince McMahon the
03:22 most hated villain in wrestling.
03:25 8.
03:26 The Heist of the Century
03:27 This sure is a weird one because this simply is a case of WWE booking themselves into a
03:31 corner and then at the last minute deciding "fine, we'll do something else."
03:36 Leading into WrestleMania 31, Roman Reigns was the least over Mania main eventer in history
03:41 to that point, and isn't that a funny thing to say today?
03:44 The fans almost unanimously did not want to see the future Tribal Chief be the one to
03:48 defeat Brock Lesnar to win the WWE Championship, but WWE's own stubbornness took them to
03:53 Mania with that plan.
03:55 Until the week of the show, the word was Brock Lesnar was leaving WWE to make another run
03:59 at a UFC comeback, so keeping the belt on him seemed unlikely.
04:03 Then Brock announced that he was staying, so all of a sudden there was hope that he
04:06 could retain the title.
04:08 Unfortunately for fans, Brock had been champion since Summerslam and a part-time champion
04:12 wasn't a permanent plan at that time, and isn't that a funny thing to say today?
04:16 WWE's final answer to get them out of this particularly poorly booked WrestleMania main
04:20 event was leaving fans with one of the best WrestleMania moments of all time with Seth
04:26 Rollins cashing in his Money in the Bank contract and stealing the title out from under Brock
04:30 and Roman in the Heist of the Century.
04:33 7.
04:34 The Undertaker's Early Streak Matches
04:36 The Undertaker's WrestleMania streak is one of the most legendary and prolific creations
04:40 in WWE history, but damned are WWE if they try to tell you that this was always the plan.
04:45 I sure won't listen to that nonsense when there's a DQ win in there.
04:48 But while the streak as a whole can be looked at as one of the greatest long-term creations
04:52 WWE ever had, there are certainly a number of questionable steps taken along the way
04:56 when isolated.
04:58 Giant Gonzalez losing by DQ to set up a big blow-off match at Summerslam doesn't really
05:01 make much sense when you think about it.
05:03 The Undertaker beating Triple H at WrestleMania X-Seven when Triple H had just beaten number
05:07 one contender and soon-to-be-WWF champion Steve Austin a month earlier doesn't really
05:12 make much sense when you think about it.
05:13 But these things are absolutely justifiable when looked at in a broader context because
05:18 these wins at WrestleMania gave WWE its biggest selling point for each WrestleMania for nearly
05:23 a decade with the creation of the streak.
05:26 And in the grand scheme of things, did we really need to see another Triple H win at
05:29 WrestleMania or have Giant Gonzalez have his hand raised in victory?
05:32 No, we did not.
05:34 Number 6 - New Day's Terrible Babyface Run
05:37 Alright now we're getting into the sh*t.
05:40 WWE is quick to name the New Day as one of the greatest factions in history now, but
05:44 they sure weren't as quick to show you highlights of the group's first six months.
05:47 That's because there were no highlights from their first six months.
05:50 The New Day were a horribly bland babyface act out the gate, with their power of positivity
05:55 shtick not at all resonating with people who had been watching Kofi Kingston and Big E
05:59 be generic babyfaces for so long.
06:02 The power of the WWE fans' negativity reached its crescendo at WrestleMania 31, where fans
06:07 continued to chant "New Day Sucks!
06:10 New Day Sucks!" finally prompting WWE to allow the group to turn heel, which catapulted
06:16 them to the success they were destined to achieve.
06:18 The New Day's heel run consisted of them telling fans to be positive, only to be booed,
06:23 which only then churned Xavier Woods into a fit of very not-positive rage.
06:27 By the time they arrived at Summerslam 2015, they were the most popular act on the show
06:31 as a result of their impeccable character work, only made possible by a horrendous babyface
06:37 run to start.
06:38 5.
06:39 Rocky Maivia's Terrible Babyface Run
06:41 The same story as the New Day, but on a much larger scale.
06:45 Rocky Maivia did not resonate with the WWF fans when he arrived on the scene in 1996.
06:50 He was a smiling, white meat, mom and pop, apple pie babyface ready to give it 110% and
06:56 prove why he's the Intercontinental Champion.
06:58 And when you have badass Steve Austin quickly becoming the most popular star wrestling had
07:02 ever seen on the same show, yeah it doesn't take much brainpower to figure out why the
07:06 fans started to chant "Rocky Sucks."
07:09 This was the late 90s, and not the world that could be engrossed by this type of character.
07:13 But where WWE benefited from their poor attempt at booking a future babyface star is when
07:17 they finally released the shackles from young Rocky and allowed him to become The Rock,
07:22 the most charismatic talker they have ever had and one of the best heel promos in WWE
07:27 history.
07:28 I don't need you to give a history lesson on The Rock, you all know who he is, and don't
07:31 you lie to me because I have proof.
07:34 This might be the biggest case of WWE's benefit from their own failure because honestly, how
07:38 much more can you benefit than ending up with The Rock?
07:42 4.
07:43 Becky Lynch Turns Heel
07:44 God this whole saga feels like it was yesterday, and also a million years ago.
07:49 Becky Lynch was a popular babyface star on Smackdown in 2018 who did what a good contender
07:53 should do and worked her way up the ranks by beating the rest of the roster until she
07:57 had earned a title match at Summerslam.
07:59 Of course, it was only then that Charlotte Flair was unfairly added to her title match
08:02 (boy does that ever sound familiar) and steal the pin away from her to win the title.
08:07 Now if I didn't know better, that sure would sound like Becky was being wronged and thus
08:11 was the hero of this story, but not in WWE.
08:14 WWE instead tried to portray Charlotte as the hero, while Becky turned sour, attacking
08:18 not only Charlotte after the match, but the fans verbally on the following Smackdown.
08:23 She said the fans never supported her, which was categorically not true, and was so not
08:28 true in fact, that the fans forced WWE's hand to make Becky Lynch a no-nonsense, badass
08:34 champion of the people.
08:35 WWE was very resistant to this, and this wasn't a change made overnight, but they did end
08:40 up with one of their most organically popular stars in quite some time out of it, and it
08:44 stands to reason that Becky would not have been this popular at this level had the fans
08:49 not had to fight for her to be their champion.
08:52 3.
08:53 WWE Can't Book Bray Wyatt
08:56 Holy s***, which time do you want to talk about?
08:59 Bray Wyatt has had a difficult go of things over the years, thanks to his character requiring
09:02 a bit more brainpower to book than your average wrestling character.
09:05 Just about everything after he lost to John Cena at WrestleMania 30 was pretty pants,
09:10 whether it be his constant ramblings about buzzards, the projected maggots, the dirty
09:14 refrigerator, Sister Abigail, it was all just so bad.
09:19 But thankfully we live in a world where Bray Wyatt is a creative genius, and had we not
09:23 been forced to sit through those years upon years of bad booking of Bray, we wouldn't
09:28 have been gifted the Firefly Funhouse, a deconstruction of Wyatt's years of misuse by the company
09:33 and the most interesting work he had done since his days as a cult leader.
09:36 Unfortunately, the bad booking doesn't stop there, as WWE felt the need to treat their
09:40 fans the way a kid treats a whack-a-mole, feeding the fiend to Goldberg in 2020, but
09:44 again, at the very least, this absolute creative booking blunder freed Wyatt up to do the
09:49 Firefly Funhouse match at WrestleMania 36.
09:53 Even when WWE tries their hardest to ruin Wyatt's day, he always found a way to come
09:57 back.
09:58 2.
09:59 Sheamus Beats Daniel Bryan in 18 Seconds
10:01 WWE thought they were being real funny at WrestleMania 28, this show being attended
10:06 by many of the most hardcore wrestling fans in the world and watched by over a million
10:10 more at home, fans that had paid their money to see the matches that had been advertised,
10:14 including but not limited to Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus for the World Heavyweight Championship,
10:18 a match WWE decided fans just weren't going to get a chance to see on this night, as they
10:22 had Sheamus beat Bryan in 18 seconds as the Super Mario Sunshine Game Over music played
10:27 over top of it.
10:29 In one way, WWE greatly did not benefit from this, as Sheamus never got off the ground
10:33 as World Champion because of this booking fiasco, as so many fans held Bryan in such
10:38 high regard.
10:39 Where the benefit did come, however, is in the groundswell of support for Daniel Bryan
10:43 himself.
10:44 Bryan had been enjoying a stellar reign as World Heavyweight Champion prior to Mania,
10:47 but this support made it impossible for Bryan to slip back down the card.
10:51 If it wasn't over before, this whole incident made the "Yes" chant the phenomenon it
10:55 became.
10:56 Whether it was his fantastic feud with CM Punk, his team with future mayor f***head
11:00 Kane or his WWE title match with John Cena at Summerslam, a decisive WrestleMania loss
11:05 may have been the best thing to happen to Bryan.
11:08 That is until…
11:09 Number 1.
11:10 Batista Wins The 2014 Royal Rumble Those in WWE will try to tell you that the
11:15 main event of WrestleMania 30 was a brilliantly told story executed to perfection by the uber-talented
11:19 creative minds of those at the top.
11:21 Of course, anyone who lived through the "Yes" movement knows that this is not the case.
11:25 In the real world, WWE had no interest in paying off the Daniel Bryan vs. The Authority
11:30 storyline…
11:31 Maybe ever.
11:32 They wanted Bryan to wrestle Sheamus at WrestleMania.
11:35 Again!
11:36 And knowing them, they probably would have pulled the rug out from under them for a third
11:39 time.
11:40 But no, once Batista won the Royal Rumble in 2014, the fans made it their mission to
11:44 campaign for Bryan to compete at WrestleMania in nothing less than the main event.
11:48 It is incomprehensible to me that WWE didn't plan to pay off Bryan's story, but their
11:53 booking incompetence made for a legitimate fan-driven storyline that made for an even
11:58 more cathartic moment when Bryan finally did win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
12:02 at WrestleMania.
12:03 It wasn't on purpose, but WWE's bad booking made for one of the best moments in their
12:07 history, so really, who can be righteously indignant about that?
