Carlos Alcaraz‘s natural dominant game is tempered when he’s playing indoors, says Patrick Mouratoglou – but that’s no reason he can’t play well and win matches.

The world No 2 began his ATP Finals campaign in Turin with a three-set defeat to Alexander Zverev 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4.

And in the latest episode of The Eye of the Coach, the Frenchman assesses the strengths of the young Spaniard’s game, and explores why it’s not so well suited when he heads indoors.

“It’s more difficult for Alcaraz to be dominant on indoor hard court,” says Mouratoglou.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE EYE OF THE COACH
0.08 – Alcaraz is better at dealing with tricky outside conditions than most other players. “All the things that are a bit difficult to control for lots of players, he doesn’t care,” says Mouratoglou.
0.21 – The quality of Alcaraz’s athleticism, power and feel mean he feels comfortable outdoors.
0.30 – Being indoors takes away that particular asset that he benefits from when he’s outside. Alcaraz can defend, but “his game is to control”.
0.45 – Players who serve well and hit the ball very hard do well indoors, like Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune, and it’s hard for Alcaraz to play from the back of the court.
1.08 – There is no reason for Alcaraz not to play great tennis indoors. “The indoor season is very short…he needs to get used to that surface more than other players,” says Mouratoglou.
1.20 – Mouratoglou points out that someone like Rune grew up in a country where he has played indoors a lot, so Alcaraz needs more experience on the surface.

00:00 For the moment, Carlos Alcaraz is not as good as a player.
00:03 He doesn't perform as well indoors than outdoors.
00:05 (upbeat music)
00:08 I would say that Carlos is incredible
00:10 at dealing with outside conditions.
00:13 Wind, sun, all the things that are a bit difficult
00:18 to control for a lot of players, he doesn't care.
00:21 In a way, the quality of his athleticism,
00:25 and power, and feel, makes him feel very comfortable
00:28 in difficult conditions.
00:29 Indoor takes away all the difficult conditions.
00:32 So it's an asset that he cannot use, really.
00:35 Now he's also a player who likes to control the game.
00:37 Of course he can defend,
00:38 but his game is to control the game.
00:40 And indoors it's more difficult to be in control of the game
00:43 because you have all the guys who serve great,
00:45 you have all the guys who hit the ball very hard,
00:49 that are, their game is just sublime indoors.
00:52 For example, I think a player like Sinner or Holger
00:56 are very dangerous indoors,
00:58 and it's more difficult for Carlos
00:59 to be as dominant indoors from his ground strokes
01:02 from the back of the court than in outdoors.
01:05 So I think that the main reasons,
01:06 but I don't see any objective reason
01:08 why he wouldn't play great tennis indoors out of those.
01:11 Probably he doesn't have a lot of experience indoors.
01:14 Alcaraz is young on tour,
01:16 it's gonna be his first ATP finals.
01:19 The indoor season is very short.
01:21 Some players, because of the country they live in,
01:23 let's say for example Holger,
01:25 they have played indoors a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot.
01:28 Him, probably not.
01:30 So he needs to get used to that surface
01:33 more than other players.
