00:00 Fish kill is a result of the poor quality of water in a barangay in Cavite City.
00:06 This is based on the initial investigation of fishermen, according to the group of investigators.
00:11 It is also an indication of pollution from various industries and ships in Manila Bay.
00:17 The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources or BFAR is also investigating the cause of the fish kill.
00:24 For days, fishermen have not been able to fish and some children have also become sick due to the smell.
00:31 More than 200 fish have been killed.
00:36 Let's update on the effect of the fish kill in Cavite City.
00:42 Joining us in the news this afternoon is the Chief Information Officer of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Nazir Briguera.
00:49 Good morning and welcome to the news this afternoon.
00:53 Yes, good morning sir, Mg. Connie and to all the viewers of your program.
01:01 Yes sir, good morning. The first question is of course about the fish kill. Where did it come from?
01:08 The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources is already investigating and collecting samples of water and fish.
01:20 Based on the initial findings of the water quality test, it came out that the primary reason why the fish killed in the said area is the drop in the level of dissolved oxygen in the water.
01:37 It was also seen in the analysis that the level of ammonia nitrogen is high. Although it can be attributed or connected to the killing of fish in the decomposition stage, that's why the ammonia is high.
01:55 So far, other analysis of the BPAR is still ongoing because it is seen that it is possible that the algal bloom has increased.
02:04 Algal bloom means that when the micronutrients in the water are high, the microorganisms increase.
02:13 When the microorganisms increase, there can be heightened competition for dissolved oxygen.
02:20 The level of oxygen is decreasing because the fish are killed.
02:24 Okay, but in your assessment, how widespread is the effect of this fish kill?
02:30 So now, we estimate that the deaths of black-chinned tilapia are 7 tons.
02:41 We want to say that this black-chinned tilapia is not a farm tilapia.
02:47 It is not like the ones we buy in the market. It is a farm tilapia, but it is not like the ones we see and buy in the market.
02:57 In terms of commercial value, our farmers in that area are not paying attention to it because its commercial value is low because the price retention of this fish is low.
03:12 Okay, but do you have any help to those affected by this?
03:24 Yes, the immediate effect of this is on the residents who smell the foul odor in the area.
03:39 We are very happy to note that local government units are immediately responding to the operations.
03:48 But as per the Bureau of Fish and Aquatic Resources, we are in close coordination with the LGU on what can help the international livelihood of our fishermen.
03:59 But just like what I said, the impact of this is because the commercial value of these fish is low.
04:08 All right.
04:09 Okay. You mentioned that the commercial value is low, but is it possible that this will affect the supply and price of fish, I mean the variety of fish.
04:19 Based on the samples, the fish caught, the black-chilled tilapia that is being sold, if you can see, the supply of fish, we haven't seen it yet because there is no market demand for this particular fish.
04:47 So generally speaking, this incident cannot be detected.
04:51 But there are people who are saying that this is a different kind of incident.
04:55 We need to look at the integrity of our waterways because if this kind of incident happens, it means that there is a problem with the water.
05:06 So this is one of the issues that we need to address.
05:09 Okay. Thank you very much Nazer Brigera, chief information officer of BIFAR.
