Indian Motorcycle tweaked the formula of its FTR street-tracker for 2022. Pure road focus is the game, but does that translate to an improved streetbike? To find out, Santa Claus—whose legendary workshop is currently too busy with toys to build Santa his own motorcycle—snagged the top-of-the-line FTR R Carbon ($16,999) from Indian Motorcycle’s factory in Spirit Lake, Iowa. The jolly old elf used the FTR to deliver a load of Mattel Hot Wheels to the new Thompson Autism Center at the Children's Health of Orange County Hospital in Southern California.

This clinic, established in 2020, helps mentor autistic children and establish a lifelong learning path in conjunction with nearby Chapman University. Don Lawrence, a healthcare planner with Blue Cottage of CannonDesign, helped design the clinic. He has an autistic son, and his parenting experience helped drive a design that makes use of indirect lighting, calm colors, and nature images.
“As the parent of an autistic son, I can tell you it’s a nightmare to try and find resources,” said Lawrence in a CannonDesign blog post. “There was no center like this when my son was born, so it was a real challenge for me and my wife to find the resources to get interventions. Now that there’s more awareness of autism, we’ve seen more and more providers noticing and diagnosing autism early. Intervention at a facility like this can make a huge difference in their lives.”
Even with smaller-diameter rims, we’re fans of the FTR’s stance and aesthetic. The bike may be stepping away from its dirt track racing roots, but it maintains reasonable proportions, and we’re particularly fond of its carbon fiber drip (front fender, headlight cowl, and fuel tank cover). The faux carbon fiber print on the sides of the saddle is also a nice touch...

00:00 Oh, ho ho Merry Christmas
00:02 Welcome to this special holiday episode of motorcyclists
00:08 MC commute today Santa Claus is going to be riding Indian motorcycles
00:14 FTR street bike so let's go for a ride and spread some Christmas cheer ho ho ho
00:21 All right folks there it is Indian motorcycles
00:26 2022
00:29 FTR carbon are this is Indian motorcycle
00:33 top of the line
00:35 vehicle in this segment
00:38 Now Indian motorcycle company unveiled this motorcycle for the 2019 model year. This was an all-new
00:45 segment
00:47 realistically the street tracker segment it was
00:51 adorned with 19 inch front wheel 18 inch rear wheel and
00:56 This motorcycle is based off Indians FTR 750
01:01 competition specification motorcycle that it races in
01:04 flat tractor track racing
01:07 Fast forward to today that that setup didn't really work for them. So
01:12 They gravitated toward a more road setup, which we have here in the form of the 2022
01:20 FTR carbon are they chopped off some of the nomenclature the FTR 1200
01:26 Name is gone. Now. It's just FTR
01:28 they fitted
01:30 17 inch rims three and a half inch front wide
01:34 five and a half inch wide rear shot with Metzeler
01:38 Sportec m9 street bike rubber. So this is conventional traditional
01:44 Wheels and tires very easy to ride very easy to buy very easy to install very easy to source
01:51 now they also
01:53 Lowered the suspension travel for by about just over an inch. So just about an inch less suspension travel
02:01 Because the wheels are smaller diameter the bike actually sits a little bit low lower. So the seat heights lower and
02:07 they also tweaked the
02:11 calibration of
02:14 the
02:16 Throttle and engine character via via the mapping
02:21 So the motorcycle has smoother power when you initially crack the throttle
02:27 Now this carbon our spec vehicle has a neat
02:32 Carbon fiber cover fuel tank cover the fuel tanks actually down here. So it's just a cover it also has
02:40 carbon fiber headlight cowl and
02:42 carbon fiber front fender I like this this
02:48 Pseudo fake carbon fiber print on the seat that looks really cool
02:52 I've always been a big fan of these aesthetics on this motorcycle. This is a good-looking motorcycle
02:58 now the
03:01 This particular carbon are is outfitted with Oh
03:04 leans
03:06 suspension front and rear that replaces the sacks
03:09 components so we have an inverted Orleans fork with spring preload independent spring preload and
03:17 compression and rebound damping adjustment atop the fork leg
03:21 You need like a little three millimeter Allen to make the damping adjustment. It's kind of hard to get in there, but you can
03:27 The shock is direct mount. It connects directly between the frame and swing arm. No linkage
03:34 spring preload adjustment and
03:37 compression
03:38 And I'm sorry compression and rebound adjustment right there. So that is a $2,000
03:45 Upgrade over the FTR s which is another 2,000 upgrade over the standard FTR
03:51 The FTR s gets these awesome
03:54 Akrapovic
03:56 Mufflers very nice. It also gets this awesome 4.7 inch
04:01 Color touchscreen compatible TFT display again. Very nice. It also includes an IMU which gives this vehicle
04:11 situational awareness so it powers the traction control system on this bike out also the
04:18 IMU lean angle sensitive a
04:21 BS we also have a USB charging port here
04:26 $17,000 for this bike
04:30 $16,999 the Santa Claus think it's worth it. Let's swing a leg over it and see what's up
04:36 Alright folks Santa Claus is very pleased a good old-fashioned mechanical key. Yes
04:42 This mechanical key is a little bit chintzy looking though for a $17,000 bike
04:49 Indian motorcycle. Can you fit a more pleasing looking mechanical key?
04:55 Let's fire this thing up
04:58 And away we go I love this 4.7 inch color TFT display
05:05 It is very nice
05:07 It is very very nice and away we go
05:16 folks
05:18 No now ergonomically speaking
05:20 this
05:22 motorcycle has
05:24 It has a interesting
05:27 ergonomic package now
05:29 Because the fuel tank cover is so wide this motorcycle actually feels pretty wide
05:34 But the seat heights nice and low and the step through is nice and low so you don't have to be a tall
05:40 person to operate this
05:44 vehicle
05:46 The handlebar is a little bit more narrow than we remember
05:50 But the height is nice. It's not too high. It's not too low
05:54 It does have a good amount of rearward sweep, which is kind of standard for most street bikes
06:03 Now the this motorcycle has rear set style foot pegs so the foot controls are set
06:10 back rearward like a standard motorcycle or a standard sport orientated street bike and
06:18 the foot pegs
06:22 If you're a taller guys, it's a bit tight. The foot pegs are pretty high. They're pretty far back
06:27 It's a bit tight not terribly tight, but definitely a bit tight
06:32 But at the same time that helps give you good cornering clearance despite the
06:39 just over one inch reduction in
06:43 seat
06:45 height
06:47 Now the
06:50 Engine on this motorcycle this motorcycle is powered by a
06:55 1203 CC 60 degree to be twin that
07:01 Indian motorcycle has engineered
07:04 1203 CC 60 degree V twin this motorcycle
07:08 It sounds and feels very much like an old-school
07:14 Ducati L twin this engine reminds me of a Ducati L twin very much
07:19 So and that's a good thing because old-school Ducati L twins they kick butt they have great sound great torque
07:28 They're exhilarating to ride. You don't have to rev them to the moon to get them to go anywhere
07:32 And I just like that engine configuration a lot and I feel a lot of similarities in this power train
07:40 Now this particular vehicle makes right around a hundred and twelve horsepower and
07:49 81 pound-feet of torque at the business end of
07:53 the
07:55 17 inch Metzeler Sportec m9 tire. That's a good amount of pirate power. Yes this bike
08:03 It is pretty hefty
08:05 Realistically don't feel it's heft in motion, but it is a heavy bike at 516 pounds
08:09 I'm sorry 513 pounds
08:12 But this thing's got some stop to it. I
08:15 Like how first gear is nice and low
08:19 Which allows you to escape stoplights very quickly the cable actuated clutch has good feel
08:26 Good feel you don't have to be a he-man to squeeze the clutch lever it definitely
08:31 Has some level of squeeze required, but it's not too wispy. I always don't like when motorcycles have really wimpy
08:39 Clutch lever pull it they just make some feel cheap
08:42 This one's well weighted
08:45 Yeah, it's not so heavily weighted where you have to be a he-man to pull it. I also like that has real good feel
08:51 Good job Indian Motorcycle Company
08:54 Now this engine at lower rpm this engine I just I'd really like it's nice and smooth
09:03 The calibration of the throttle is much more
09:07 It's just more refined. So when you twist that throttle initially, it just has really good smooth
09:15 feel
09:17 The engine power pulses you can feel them through the handlebar and through the foot pegs, but they're not overwhelming yet
09:24 But when you get this engine singing over 5,000 rpm
09:30 Engine vibrations pretty significant. You feel a lot of engine vibration through the handlebar and the foot peg
09:37 Realistically, it's not that big of a deal because six gear on this motorcycle is nice and high
09:43 At 70 miles per hour. This thing's only pulling
09:46 Right around 4,000 rpm. So you're really not gonna feel that buzz if you drive at
09:54 normal legal freeway speeds
09:56 But above that you're gonna feel the engine vibration and it is a little bit off-putting to me at that running speed
10:04 Now a six speed transmission
10:10 puts power back
10:13 Via a chain final drive on the left-hand side of the motorcycle
10:19 now for most
10:21 Times we had a little bit of a misshift there, but the transmission works pretty well has good engagement
10:28 Positive feel works good, but for a $17,000 motorcycle this thing absolutely needs to have a
10:37 directional electronic quick shifter. There's no way that this motorcycle shouldn't have that and what that would do is that would facilitate
10:43 clutchless full throttle up shifts and
10:47 clutchless down shifts which help
10:51 elevate
10:53 vehicle stability during corner entry when you're really getting some
10:57 And cornering in this low to medium speed environment is really what this FTR
11:06 carbon are does best
11:08 I
11:10 really like the low to medium speed handling of this motorcycle on a smooth road the
11:17 suspension in
11:20 OE configuration the suspension setup was pretty goofy
11:23 The bike was really springy really fast rebound just kind of goofy
11:28 But I made some tweaks to the spring preload slow down the damping and it really netted a different motorcycle
11:36 I'm really impressed with how much adjustment range is
11:38 afforded in this Olean suspension once you get the suspension set up to your liking the
11:45 Actions very controlled very very controlled more so than I remember with the old 1918 inch equipped
11:52 bike
11:54 That gives good support when you are riding hard on the throttle hard on the brakes through the turns
12:02 But at the same time even though the suspension has good control once it's set up this bike
12:09 It does not deliver
12:11 It only delivers good ride quality on smooth roads if you have a broken old worn out piece of asphalt
12:18 This bike does not like that surface at all it wants brand new pavement
12:26 For whatever reason the chassis just delivers a real rough ride when the pavements broken
12:31 I'd love this thing it has so much balls
12:33 This
12:39 70 some cubic inch I think it's 72 cubic inch engines got some
12:44 Got some meat to it. It likes to get up and go I like this engine a lot
12:50 Now we spoke about in the inner finding the the EFI calibration the engine map calibration and throttle calibration
13:00 When you initially twist the throttle I like that throttle is much easier to use at
13:05 lower low speeds and small throttle openings
13:10 but once you start really giving this thing the beans the throttle response is just
13:15 it has
13:17 You have good direct feel to the engine, but it's hard to modulate the throttle needs added
13:24 refine refinement at medium to high openings
13:30 It's just too herky-jerky at those settings so Indian Motorcycle Company. We would like you to spend more time
13:37 refining your ride by wire throttle settings at
13:42 medium and
13:44 Above throttle angle openings it needs to be better
13:48 Now this particular vehicle has
13:54 Three different combined engine power and throttle map maps rain
13:59 Standard and sport. Let's go into sport. I
14:03 Love this touchscreen you see that boys and girls you just touch it and it does it why can't other motorcycle?
14:11 manufacturers employ
14:13 touchscreen technology good job Indian motorcycle
14:17 We are happy that you are a paying attention to the details
14:23 So sport mode is the most aggressive power setting and
14:27 You definitely feel that when you twist the throttle the engine is more apt to come online
14:33 This type of road is where the Indian
14:38 Really shines these slow to medium speed roads where you're going below 60 miles per hour
14:47 And
14:49 For a 513 pound motorcycle this thing is pretty dang agile
14:54 It definitely handles
14:57 The handling is more planted than the previous
15:02 1918 inch bike once you get your preferred
15:06 suspension
15:08 damping and spring
15:10 adjustments
15:15 It's so fun as long as the pavement is smooth
15:19 And you don't hit any bumps this bike delivers a pretty good ride
15:23 But once you start hitting those bumps gosh you really feel them through the controls both at the fork and the shock
15:30 Now this particular vehicle is equipped with traction control it is enabled right now
15:43 It is either on or off traction control there are
15:46 No different adjustment settings
15:49 There is some form of wheelie control
15:53 Factored into the traction control so if you really want to do some big wheelies turn off traction control
16:00 There's those bumps. I really feel those things through the controls
16:05 Now for riding around town like we're doing right now this motorcycle works really good
16:12 It's fun. It sounds cool. It looks cool, but
16:15 For extended riding this ergonomic package definitely could get annoying
16:21 Definitely the motorcycle feels wide between your legs
16:25 The rear sets are kind of high
16:28 Yes
16:32 Yes
16:35 I love ripping this bike yes
16:38 What a fun engine
16:42 And
16:44 Away we go guys
16:46 Now this particular
16:49 Display you can pair this display very easily via Bluetooth with your smartphone
16:57 It's very easy to pair up here paired by
17:00 iPhone with it really easily and that allows you to receive text messages and make phone calls
17:08 But realistically I don't want to read text messages while I'm riding this bike. I don't want to make phone calls
17:12 I don't even know how that would even work because I'm riding
17:15 I don't have a Bluetooth enabled headset, but if you wanted to do that you can
17:19 Indian motorcycle also offers an iOS
17:23 powered app
17:26 which allows you to plan routes and
17:30 do
17:32 Check your vehicle maintenance and other things the only problem is you have to log in you have to create account
17:40 Login and do all of that stuff other manufacturers
17:45 Apps don't require you to set up a login you just pair it to the phone and it just works
17:50 So I would like if in the end removed that
17:54 That step of having to log in and set up account an account. I wish it would just
18:01 Download the app you pair to the bike you're done. That would be much better
18:05 Here we are cruising at 70 miles per hour, let's turn on the cruise control
18:12 Cruise control is on
18:15 66 miles per hour just pulling below
18:20 4,000 rpm at this speed the engine vibration isn't too much. I like the view of these rearview mirrors
18:30 The
18:31 circular shape
18:33 Still works. Well, I can see what I'm doing the vibration of the engine doesn't cloud
18:38 The mirrors too much. Let's extreme increase our speed at 86 miles per hour
18:44 The engine vibration is significant. It is significant. It clouds the view of the mirrors
18:51 Indian motorcycle, let's get a smoother
18:54 Let's get reduced engine vibration at higher RPMs, please
18:59 (engine noise)
19:01 We rode this vehicle after dark and the LED powered
19:11 Headlamp does a great job of illuminating dark stretches of road
19:18 I'm really happy with how bright that LED headlamp is. Good job Indian
19:25 this motorcycle also employs an LED taillight and turn signals a
19:30 lot of motorcycle manufacturers skimp on the LED turn signals, but this one has them I
19:36 also like that the turn signals and license plate are integrated in this nifty bracket that hangs off the
19:45 Swing arm of the motorcycle that gives the rear end a very nice and clean look
19:53 (engine noise)
19:55 Now because this motorcycle has an IMU
19:59 It would be nice if Indian incorporated cornering headlight technology into this motorcycle that would allow
20:07 the
20:08 Sides of the road to be illuminated when you're going through turns
20:12 It wouldn't in theory it wouldn't cost that much more for Indian to have that feature on this motorcycle because it already has an IMU
20:21 It already has LED headlamps Indian. Please have cornering headlight technology on this vehicle
20:28 Now this FTR carbon R has a 3.4 gallon fuel tank 3.4 gallons
20:35 This thing gets right above 30 miles per gallon
20:40 So if you can get a hundred miles per gallon out of the range onto this thing, that is a good thing
20:47 so realistically with that small fuel capacity, that's really gonna limit the
20:52 Your ability to ride this thing long distances
20:56 This motorcycle really is geared towards just urban riding urban riding
21:02 Cruising around local spots on the weekend. You don't really want to go on long trips on this
21:08 motorcycle triple disc hydraulic brakes keep speed in check
21:15 We have Rambo
21:17 monoblock radio mount calipers two of them up front a nice big rear disc on the back
21:23 I love big back brakes from a big rear brake guy
21:26 And the brakes set up on this motorcycle works real well. I like the lever and pedal sensitivity
21:33 I like this radio mount master cylinder
21:35 So the brakes have good sensitivity but the power is a little bit soft
21:43 When you're really getting on the brakes hard
21:45 The power is a little bit soft and the lower
21:50 Softer fork spring weight really plays into that
21:54 So the when you're really getting off after the front brake
21:58 front brakes the fork spring doesn't it's not stiff enough to really support the
22:04 Front suspension you're really lean on it
22:07 But realistically you're never gonna really be doing that unless you're panic braking or riding on a racetrack and just being a wild man
22:14 Now this vehicle has lean sensitive ABS
22:19 It's always on you can't turn it off ever. You also can't disable rear ABS, which would be nice
22:25 And while I appreciate this vehicle has ABS the programming of the ABS circuitry is very conservative
22:34 Especially compared to European spec naked bikes
22:37 European spec naked bikes have much more
22:40 Advanced ABS programming logic that allows you to use the brakes very aggressively
22:47 without having ABS intervention
22:51 All right, yes, oh, let's give this thing some beans again. Yes
23:01 I love working the gearbox on this motorcycle. What a fun engine
23:07 Excessive high rpm vibration aside this thing's fun
23:12 Delivers good get up and go sounds cool as a real direct feel when
23:19 You are giving it the beans. I still would like added
23:23 throttle
23:25 response
23:28 Sensitivity smoother throttle you can really tell when you're doing wheelies and you're doing wheelies as things all over the place herky-jerky style
23:35 Maintenance
23:42 Now these Indian motorcycle FTR
23:47 Carbon our vehicles are built in spirit Lake, Iowa. This is an American-made
23:56 Vehicle they carry a two-year warranty
23:59 maintenance after your initial 500 mile service
24:03 Oil engine oil and filter changes are recommended every 10,000 miles and valve
24:10 Inspection
24:13 inspection of the
24:15 two four valve cylinder heads is
24:17 Every 20,000 miles, which is pretty good
24:20 10,000 mile oil and filter changes
24:23 20,000 mile
24:26 Cylinder head valve train inspection and air filter the air filter is recommended to be cleaned or replaced
24:33 Every 5,000 miles just kind of early, but will it slide because the oil change interval and the valve
24:40 Adjustment interval is so far. It's also worth noting. That's always good to
24:46 flush the hydraulic
24:50 Brake components front and rear every two years. No one ever does that but you should do it. I
24:55 Love sharp feeling brakes on all of my vehicles
24:59 For wheel vehicles included so I'm always flushing the brake fluid all the time because I need to have race performance on all of my vehicles
25:08 Let's enable cruise control again
25:12 Again I really like this
25:17 Display, there's the USB charging port so you plug your phone in there music. I don't really know. There's no speakers
25:24 You're not gonna play music still need to have that kind of functionality in the vehicle
25:30 I like how you can set this display up for night mode
25:33 Night mode is totally awesome
25:37 That is
25:41 Black background white numbers makes it easier to see well folks. That was a fun day
25:47 dressing up a Santa Claus and
25:49 Going for a ride on Indian motorcycles
25:53 2022
25:56 FTR are
25:57 Carbon, I do like this motorcycle for riding around town and riding on bowling ball smooth slow to medium
26:06 Speed corners this motorcycle works really? Well, I like how agile it is
26:11 I like how the suspension has more control. I
26:15 Like that engine this engine reminds me of old-school Ducati L twins, which is a good thing
26:21 This thing likes to romp has good character
26:24 Yes, the engine vibrates a lot at higher RPMs. But if you could just live with that it is
26:32 Okay, still for
26:35 $17,000 this motorcycle realistically is a one-trick pony
26:40 But
26:41 If you're cool with that if you are cool with a motorcycle that can only be used in a certain situation. I
26:49 Would think that it is worth it. It looks cool
26:54 it handles good on smooth roads and just got a lot of character and
26:58 It's just a neat motorcycle that's built here in America
27:04 well folks this next segment we went to the
27:09 Autism Center the Thompson Autism Center at the Children's Hospital of Orange County in
27:14 Orange, California the audio got screwed up
27:18 So we're gonna have you see the video and I'm gonna just narrate it for you guys
27:25 So check that out. Make sure to log on to motorcyclist online.com
27:30 That's where all of our written content lives
27:32 Give this video a thumbs up if you liked it thumbs it down if you didn't and maybe we'll see you next time in the future
27:39 Thanks for watching with us. All right, folks Santa's elves forgot to plug in his microphone
27:44 So our audio is not working. So we're gonna do an old-school voiceover here
27:49 Santa Claus is pulling up to the Thompson Autism Center in Orange, California
27:55 As part of the Children's Hospital of Orange County, there's Lenny
27:59 Lenny is very excited to see Santa Claus on his 2020 FTR
28:06 Carbon that is Lenny's father John Samanovitch
28:09 John Samanovitch runs moto for kids racing. This is a Southern, California based
28:17 motocross
28:18 racing series for children
28:20 so if you have a kid who is less than or equal to 16 years old and they want to wail and
28:27 Ride their dirt bikes. There is a class for him or her
28:33 regardless of the vehicle they ride now
28:36 the moto for kids racing organization
28:39 Very generously ran a toy drive this winter season where they had their
28:47 Competitors their children donate toys to help the kids here at the Thompson Autism Center
28:55 Kids helping kids very nice to see young kids helping their fellow kid out
29:02 with toys, especially during the holiday season
29:04 Santa Claus here has a couple boxes of
29:08 fabulous Mattel Hot Wheels
29:11 Santa Claus can do it all don't ask how he was able to manage to
29:15 Strap those boxes on there without them falling off, but Santa Claus can do everything except plug in his microphone when it's go time
29:23 These Mattel Hot Wheels toy cars are just awesome
29:29 Santa Claus is a little bit old a little bit gray now
29:32 But he still has an affinity for those Hot Wheels toys
29:36 It makes him take a ride back down memory lane to when he was a kid. So here we are
29:42 giving the
29:45 Mattel Hot Wheels toys to the kids along with the moto for kids racing
29:49 organization there is
29:52 Easton Easton is also a son of John and Ashley
29:57 Zimanovich and he is chipping in and giving some toys to
30:02 Some kids that could always use a little bit cheering up now. What's really neat about the Thompson
30:08 Autism Center in in Orange, California is this is a one-stop shop for
30:16 kids who may be autistic and who are medically diagnosed as autistic it
30:24 Not only has the ability to diagnose kids it puts them
30:28 through a lifelong learning path from
30:32 preschool through you know, their junior schooling and up into college the
30:39 the Autism Center is partnered with nearby Chapman University, so
30:44 theoretically autistic kids can go through a
30:49 lifelong learning process get into college and be able to just to learn and be able to
30:56 grow in in
30:59 Educational institution that's going to understand their special needs and requirements
31:06 I think it's really cool if you want to help out
31:10 special cause I think that Thompson Autistic Center is a worthy one and if you
31:16 Think that your children might have some kind of autism in the family go over there
31:21 They're gonna be able to help you out
31:22 They're probably gonna be one of the best paths in Southern, California to get your kid
31:27 Able to communicate and on the right path for a lifetime of success
31:33 Special thanks to Mattel and Hot Wheels for their awesome toys
31:37 There we are pouring some more Mattel Hot Wheels into the box. I love Hot Wheels cars. These things are awesome
