Trail 15 at Windrock OHV has a reputation for violence. It sits like a threat, one of the first routes off of the park’s main paved road, promising all manner of pain for first-time visitors. Most riders linger for a moment, eye the series of stone steps, then heed their better angels and make for less ominous terrain. That’s been us for the better part of a year. Anytime we headed to Windrock with a test unit, we’d have to ride past that double-black-diamond route for fear of having to call a manufacturer and tell them that gravity and a few lumps of sandstone had turned their shiny new side-by-side to slag. But our project 2020 Can-Am Maverick X3 X RS Turbo RR is a different story. I wouldn’t have to call Papa BRP if we put that one on its lid.
And we’ve slowly built the machine to handle routes like this. With bumpers front and rear, rock sliders, and a beefy Warn winch, the X3 can bounce off of just about anything without doing any serious damage. Add in our 35-inch BFGoodrich KM3 tires and KMC beadlock wheels, and we’ve got the equipment to make short work of serious routes. At least, that was the plan.
The trail doesn’t waste any time. The second your tires leave the pavement, you’re climbing. And while the sandstone offers up more grip than the slick clay and limestone we’re accustomed to seeing on the East Coast, it won’t do much to pull you up the mountain. For that, you’ll need throttle. Lots of it. How’d it go?

00:00 Alright, a lot of people ride 15 all the time and it's not that big a deal.
00:04 Um, you know, there's some trails that just get in your head.
00:08 Yeah, no, I did not take a lot of convincing because I wanted to do this since we built this stupid thing.
00:12 Well, here we are. It's built.
00:16 It's built.
00:16 And we're here.
00:17 And we're here.
00:18 So.
00:18 And you're gonna hit it.
00:20 I'm gonna hit it. I'm gonna hit it. I'm gonna send it, boys.
00:22 This was my idea.
00:23 For the other record, I'm not driving.
00:28 [Music]
00:52 We tried to take an R-Max up it a couple, I guess a year ago and that didn't go great.
00:58 So, um, yeah, we shouldn't have any problems with the old canned ham.
01:01 I think it should be alright.
01:02 The R-Max didn't have 35s or 200 odd horsepower or a turbo.
01:09 None of those things matter when you're rock crawling.
01:11 35s matter.
01:13 35s matter.
01:14 35s matter. It's also, it's deft.
01:18 It is deft. Yeah, she's deeply capable.
01:20 I don't think we're gonna have any trouble with the first two steps.
01:22 It's the, it's the step on the out that I'm a little, a little concerned about.
01:25 Also, this one has a winch.
01:27 The R-Max did not have a winch.
01:28 Our winch doesn't work.
01:29 Sick.
01:32 All right.
01:32 So, general thought here is you can come up and come up here.
01:37 It's all no big deal.
01:38 And you get this little big old step and you can sort of see the tire marks there.
01:44 Typical go with side to side.
01:45 Stick to the left.
01:46 Go up on that side and then stay left.
01:51 Um, keeps you out of the water.
01:53 Come up here.
01:54 Hang left.
01:56 You can keep shooting.
01:59 That's the plan.
02:01 I think you rock, paper, scissors three ways.
02:03 Yeah.
02:05 So everybody shoots at the same time.
02:06 The losers in that situation are out and the winner has to ride.
02:11 Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.
02:14 Okay, so.
02:15 I lose.
02:17 Because paper covers rock.
02:19 That's why three way doesn't work.
02:21 I was thinking that through and I was like, well, maybe Zach's, no, he doesn't.
02:24 I don't know.
02:24 I don't know.
02:25 Attorney style.
02:26 You and Aaron go.
02:27 One, two, three, shoot.
02:28 Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.
02:30 Okay.
02:31 All right.
02:32 So you and Hoyer.
02:33 Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.
02:34 Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.
02:37 Okay.
02:38 Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.
02:40 You're in, bud.
02:42 We're going for a ride.
02:44 We're wheeling, boys.
02:45 All right.
02:48 Chill 15, our Project Can.
02:50 Here we go.
02:54 You're an audience.
02:57 So,
03:04 So,
03:23 So,
03:33 Wow.
03:49 All right.
03:51 I don't know what that is.
03:52 You got it.
03:57 You're going to come down hard.
04:09 Uh, can we just talk about
04:19 Can we just talk about how amazing these suckers are?
04:22 I mean, we put, we put 35 inch KM3s on it.
04:26 BFG KM3s on it.
04:27 Beadlocks.
04:29 I'm probably running like 10 PSI, which is, you know, honestly too much, but we were,
04:33 we were hossing around earlier.
04:36 So, you know, you'll get that.
04:38 Uh, and the thing just did it.
04:40 I mean, to do 15, you used to have to have like an actual buggy, you know,
04:45 or at least something on 37s.
04:47 And, uh, and yeah, that's, that's some of my apprehension, right?
04:51 Because, you know, this, this, this place is a little bit like, uh, 129, the dragon, right?
04:56 It's got a, it's got a, it's got a reputation for hurting folk and I don't want to get hurt.
05:01 So here we are.
05:04 It is known as being known for being fearsome.
05:06 Fearsome.
05:07 Video always does that thing.
05:09 You're like, that ain't so bad.
05:10 Uh, and you know, I've watched plenty of videos.
05:12 Oh my God, you can smell diff oil out here.
05:14 Well, that's always a good sign.
05:17 Uh, but this is, this is, uh,
05:18 I'm zoomed out.
05:22 I'm zoomed out to 0.5, but Bowman, how tall are you?
05:24 You're 5'11".
05:26 And that first step is up to your shoulder.
05:27 All right, Bowman, how far from you am I standing?
05:31 You're standing two, two feet.
05:33 Oh, there you are.
05:36 Hmm.
05:37 That's eight feet and two feet.
05:40 Yeah.
05:41 Yeah.
05:42 This is, uh, this is one of those on the topographic
05:46 map, little squiggles get real close together.
05:48 That's what this is.
05:49 Yeah.
05:51 Yes.
05:59 Yeah.
06:11 This is what in Moab they call slick rock.
06:16 The worst thing on this whole line, and I can tell just by looking at my camera,
06:20 that it's not doing any justice.
06:22 Is this stump like, dude, you hit that sucker square on,
06:29 and she's going to moon boot you back down the mountain.
06:31 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:49 A little more, you got it.
06:50 There you go.
06:50 [MUSIC PLAYING]
07:17 Yes, boy.
07:18 Oh.
07:19 Back down.
07:22 You're on that stump straight on till morning.
07:24 There you go.
07:25 [MUSIC PLAYING]
07:38 Sit rep.
07:38 We did a little rock packing.
07:40 Rocks?
07:40 She's in the hole.
07:42 You got some rocks in the hole, you might give her a bump and see where she goes.
07:46 You ready?
07:48 I'm ready.
07:48 We're filming.
07:49 Don't say no cusses.
07:50 Yeah.
07:52 Oh.
07:54 So close.
07:56 She wants it.
07:57 We are officially in a rock free environment.
08:07 [LAUGHTER]
08:09 Go forward a hair.
08:10 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:16 Yeah, yeah, that's a big lift.
08:18 That's a big lift.
08:18 If we can get the front up over this, it'll pull.
08:22 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:29 Yes.
08:29 Hey, bud.
08:34 More tuner.
08:36 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:46 No such thing.
08:47 All right.
08:48 All right.
08:49 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:57 All right.
08:58 [MUSIC PLAYING]
09:25 Simple as that, I guess.
09:26 We did it.
09:27 Trail 15.
09:30 Done and dusted, as they say.
09:31 [LAUGHTER]
09:33 [LAUGHTER]
09:35 Man should never have to work that hard.
09:36 So I'm going to blame an entire struggle on the fact that Gage was the passenger seat.
09:41 You know, that extra 130 pounds really put me over the edge.
09:45 No credit.
09:45 [LAUGHTER]
09:47 You were just sitting there.
09:47 [LAUGHTER]
09:49 Holy scooby snacks.
09:52 That thing's aggressive, man.
09:54 Yeah, it's not good.
09:55 Aggressive.
09:57 You know, we probably could have-- OK, so we were trailer arming out.
10:02 Yeah.
10:04 Right there.
10:05 So we were actually touching there.
10:06 We burnt off a lot of very good BFG.
10:10 And felt.
10:11 And well, you know, hey, we got them to use them, right?
10:15 Yeah.
10:15 Hey, bud.
10:17 We did it.
10:19 Did it.
10:20 Yeah, boys.
10:20 Did it.
