00:00 It's that time of year again.
00:01 Time just published our list of the 100 must-read books
00:04 of 2023.
00:06 I'm here to give you a behind-the-scenes look
00:08 at how we made the list.

00:13 Our process always starts at the beginning of the year,
00:16 or even a few months before.
00:18 It takes at least 12 months of reading, researching, discussing,
00:22 and deliberating to get to the final result.
00:25 We have a dedicated group of readers
00:27 from across the newsroom who get assignments
00:29 from our books team every month.
00:31 And we gather on a regular basis to talk about everything we've
00:33 read and what we thought.
00:35 It's a lot of fun.
00:36 It's like a book club where everybody
00:37 reads something different.
00:39 To get to 100, we really strive to consider
00:42 different publishers and imprints,
00:44 different genres and themes, and authors
00:46 of different backgrounds.
00:47 We want the final result to include multiple options
00:50 for every reader.
00:51 Check out the 2023 list at time.com.
00:55 My favorite book of the year is The Rachel Incident
00:57 by Caroline O'Donohue.
00:59 YN by Esther Yee.
01:01 My favorite book of 2023 was Guests by Emma Klein.
01:04 It was definitely an anxious girl book,
01:06 and I'm an anxious girl.
01:08 I am reading right now Bird of Wood by Eleanor Catton.
01:11 And it's definitely already one of my favorite books
01:13 of the year.
01:14 And if you've read it just last night,
01:15 I got to the part where that thing happens.
01:18 And that's crazy.
01:19 And I can't wait to get back to reading it more.
