The Post-Diwali Pollution is a toxic. A thick toxic haze or 'smog' returned to Delhi, Noida, Gurugram and surrounding places a day after Diwali in India. This is a common affair after people burst crackers on Diwali night. This time around it was a clear violation of the Supreme Court's ban order, leading to heavy pollution all across the National Capital Region – which has been already battling with its deteriorating air quality.

00:00 Hello and welcome you are watching this special broadcast from One India and today we are
00:04 discussing the post Diwali scenario to simply put last evening when Diwali was there people
00:10 in Delhi and CR and several parts of the country burst firecrackers but Delhi and NCR who are
00:15 battling basically this air pollution once again were in for toxic air this morning joining
00:21 me on the broadcast is Anj and Ishika both of them are youngsters I wanted to know from
00:27 them for the benefit of our viewers and also whether the youngsters are also of the same
00:32 idea that no matter what the Supreme Court says no matter the ban will they still go
00:37 out and burst crackers will they still enjoy Diwali the way it has to but also the air
00:45 pollution factor has to be kept in mind Ishika beginning with you first how was last evening
00:50 did you light firecrackers if yes then why if not then why I did not burst firecrackers
00:57 because I was not at home and I was not basically celebrating Diwali and I don't like burning
01:03 firecrackers to be honest what is the reason for not burning firecrackers so it's a choice
01:09 or have you taken into consideration it's my personal choice okay I don't like burning
01:13 firecrackers due to the pollution and I'm scared of firecrackers okay so does it with
01:19 now that you are a journalist you have spent a lot of time in journalism schools you read
01:23 morning newspapers do you believe that somewhere down the line it is being a 20 21 year old
01:31 individual of the country and a resident of Delhi NCR do you believe that Diwali which
01:37 holds so much of significance in everyone's life in India specifically in the Hindu culture
01:42 also do you believe that the consideration for the nature and the air that we breathe
01:49 should also be yes keeping in mind that Delhi NCR is already a very polluted city we should
01:57 like consider not burning firecrackers okay so was it that's what I'm trying to ask you
02:03 was it your personal choice has it been for a long time or is it because of the recent
02:09 polluting pollution activities that have been happening the cases that have been coming
02:12 up was that also one of the reasons for you not to light firecrackers from very beginning
02:19 I haven't burned firecrackers and it's my personal choice and I also stand up for this
02:24 key you know pollution is increasing day by day and you should not burn firecrackers you
02:29 should not burn firecrackers Ishika a fresh graduate from one of the journalism schools
02:35 who has joined One India and she is of the opinion that obviously this has to have consideration
02:43 whether we light firecrackers or not keeping the air pollution in mind Ansh obviously what
02:50 was your how was your evening and what's the plan last yesterday evening was quite a good
02:57 evening for everyone and yes we celebrated Diwali my cousins were there and
03:05 I am not hesitating to say it but yes I was there I had to burn a little firecrackers
03:11 because of my cousins because they had bought some firecrackers here so we did it and yes
03:18 but personally I'm no big fan of burning firecrackers until the age of 17 18 there was sometimes
03:25 that my father used to pitch me he by a char pataki lennon to China I don't want to I am
03:31 not interested and same goes with my sister my sister so no we were not doing it last
03:36 year we did it this year we also did but coming to the pollution hazard okay last night AQI
03:44 touched 999 I think that's the highest I've ever heard that that's something bad today
03:51 morning it was around like 500 and as of now it's like 350 360 something in Noida so yeah
03:58 so see I mean that apart obviously one also crucial factor that I see generally with all
04:04 age groups is the fact that as they approach closer to that fit Diwali evening people get
04:11 excited yeah they do you know even if those who haven't bought firecrackers will say
04:15 although they are banned for sale also in Delhi the NCR areas also do not sell those
04:24 high intensity firecrackers you have to go to a proper firecracker shop also for that
04:29 which mostly are you know asked not to sell those high intensity crackers so Ishika talking
04:36 about this excitement were you able to see what's happening on the streets or what how
04:42 people were reacting how was it do you think that somehow the excitement also takes over
04:46 and it is also justified to enjoy Diwali the way it has to be I think Diwali comes only
04:52 once in a year and everyone is excited and yes I saw people burning crackers like last
04:58 night and everyone was excited whether they were burning firecrackers or not eventually
05:03 everyone was enjoying even myself I was enjoying looking outside the window burning firecrackers
05:09 and sparklers in the sky right no see the fact is you know most of our viewers would
05:15 agree to it especially you know of the age group where they have young children they
05:19 have no matter they would say they will teach the kids saying hey look we should not light
05:25 up the firecrackers let's go and enjoy let's watch the lights and all but then the moment
05:30 as the day comes closer why I am saying so because that is also one of the biggest factors
05:35 which adds to the intensity and you know the way you would see the firecrackers going off
05:42 in Noida say Gurgaon or Delhi obviously people are you know the excited also and they also
05:49 in a way I feel why I am putting this emphasis on excitement because that thought about the
05:56 environment which you have been telling your kids which you youngsters have been writing
06:01 and tweeting and posting videos about goes out of the window so how heavily does that
06:07 factor weigh in see excitement is something that plays a huge part while burning firecrackers
06:11 okay if you go into a park you are burning it alone you will suddenly start seeing people
06:17 they are also start doing burn crackers and then you will see the whole crowd there just
06:23 to enjoy the crackers just to burn the crackers so yeah your statement that it goes out of
06:28 the window it's absolutely corrected actually happens yes but there is something a factor
06:33 also known as peer pressure while burning firecrackers and while celebrating okay so
06:42 what happens is the last sentiment is that what happens in just one night?
06:46 What happens in just one day?
06:48 What happens by burning it alone?
06:50 Yes, what happens by burning it alone?
06:52 That's also one thing okay so while doing it alone, so much happens that my God the
06:55 pollution okay it's right yes see I mean again once again this is more of a you know legal
07:01 proceedings are there the ban is very much there Ishika but I think this is also you
07:07 know incumbent on ourselves how headstrong we are it's like voting you know election
07:13 is about giving a vote when we say that I am late today, there is voting today, okay
07:19 I will come back and vote, okay we will go at 3 or 4 and then at 5 o'clock when the voting
07:23 is closing or 6 o'clock then we think okay what happens with my one vote but that is
07:28 very important and one has to take time out both for voting and also to give time and
07:33 thought behind the safety and you know well-being of the environment that we are breathing in
07:40 here Ishika you know once again talking about the morning that you know the post Diwali
07:47 morning you were here at work early mornings around 8 or 9 in the morning how was it travelling
07:53 from home we know that you know the public transport starts early after Diwali because
07:59 Diwali it stops early in the evening so how was it was it any different because two days
08:05 for now as of now before Diwali we had rains and now suddenly I mean I could see it from
08:12 my balcony that the air was you know thick as cotton I would say.
08:18 Definitely I would agree with this I woke up early in the morning nearly at 7 o'clock
08:22 and it was quite thick I could barely see a tree from my window so it was really thick
08:29 I think it's all due to firecrackers pollution which happened last night.
08:34 Well yeah I mean you know if many people were saying that it has rained so there is not
08:39 much pollution in Delhi but Ansh I think you know what we could not figure out was the
08:43 fact that next morning this is going to be a yearly affair and again the smog is back
08:50 pollution is back.
08:51 Well smog is back pollution is back and we are back to square one the situation which
08:56 we were in earlier it's again the same the two days rain was the right thing even though
09:02 the pollution was very less and I think that also played a huge part in people saying that
09:06 now the pollution is over let's burn more firecrackers.
09:09 I don't understand where do they buy it from because you know I live in Noida and I don't
09:14 come across any shop which is selling those kind of firecrackers even if they were even
09:19 if they were I mean I don't think that I'll be putting in that kind of effort and money
09:24 for that matter in putting firecrackers and now that the environment angle is there with
09:29 a small kid at home I think you know many of us chose not to light up firecrackers.
09:34 Youngsters very quickly what is your message do you see firecrackers ban the complete ban
09:40 and people are adhering to it in the years to come with this rising pollution what is
09:44 your message Ishika?
09:45 Celebrate your festival celebrate Diwali but light firecrackers which have low density
09:51 does not make that much of noise no pollution and you can use eco-friendly firecrackers
09:57 no doubt and create a you know message that will be impactful in the future too like people
10:04 won't hesitate burning firecrackers.
10:07 What a message.
10:08 They should enjoy too.
10:09 Absolutely enjoyment is definitely one part of the festivities and secondly you have eco-friendly
10:15 green firecrackers also.
10:17 Ansh?
10:18 I think it's not actually a social message but yes more than ban I prefer that there
10:25 need to be a social awareness campaign.
10:28 Why do I say so?
10:29 See Supreme Court has banned even in 2020, 2021, 2022 and even this year still the crackers
10:35 were available people bought it why are they buying it where they are doing it definitely
10:39 black market.
10:41 So it has to go from the start.
10:47 You will get any sort of people love to flout rules people love to break rules especially
10:53 in a country known as India.
10:56 So yeah it happens and that's why I'm saying social awareness is more important rather
11:01 than a ban.
11:02 I'm not saying the ban should not happen ban should definitely happen on those chemicals
11:06 that are leading to such a high pollution like barium and etc.
11:10 So yeah but yes social awareness should be more prioritized here that's what I say.
11:15 So the question is the million dollar question is will you light firecrackers next year?
11:21 I can't say it right now but no I want to.
11:23 Ansh clearly you know doesn't believe in practice what you preach but nonetheless those were
11:29 the two youngsters obviously two different thoughts Ishika believes that it should be
11:33 peaceful should not light a firecrackers Ansh says that is part of the culture and should
11:37 be enjoyed.
11:38 We leave it to you know this very personal decision to you because time and again it
11:44 has been reiterated that in the days and years to come obviously the air is not going to
11:49 get any cleaner unless we try and do so and especially in metropolitan cities where the
11:54 vehicular pollution is also at an all time high these days.
11:58 So nonetheless we have to be very mindful of what we light up and what are the results
12:04 of it.
12:05 Thank you very much for watching this broadcast of what's trending with the youngsters definitely
12:10 I was there only to ask them questions but nonetheless it's an eye opener and I chose
12:14 up you know personally Ansh and Ishika to be here with you guys because last evening
12:19 also the way I was trying to navigate between whether I should go up pick up that candle
12:23 light up that firecracker or not but I had to keep myself away because yes addition you
12:30 know it was polluted smoke was there but I thought personally that if I can make that
12:36 small difference of not lighting one firecracker maybe somewhere in a different part of the
12:41 country another people another thought would also get replicated.
12:46 I'm sure there are thoughts and people who are very mindful of lighting a firecrackers
12:52 especially those with high intensity remember the impact on the pets especially the dogs
12:57 is terrible terrible and we should refrain from actually using high intensity firecrackers
13:05 it's a festival of lights it was a festival of lights so enjoy the you know only the firecrackers
13:10 which light up and not make the sound and don't produce that kind of fume or smoke after
13:16 burning thanks so much for watching this space.
