00:15 Hi SP fam! I'm Cherry Ong Tekohulyan, Video Director for Smart Parenting
00:20 and welcome to our SP Guide to Preschools in Metro Manila.
00:23 [Music]
00:29 We're here today at Junior Starters Preschool at the heart of Binondo, Manila.
00:33 Today with me is our guest student, Addy! Say hi!
00:37 Hi!
00:38 Hi! Come on, let's check out the school.
00:40 [Music]
00:44 Junior Starters is located in Quintin Paredes, Binondo, Manila.
00:49 It has a spacious gym area, six classrooms, and an enrichment room.
00:54 It also has two newly opened branches, one in Banaue, Quezon City, and another in Parkal Mall, Asiana City, Parañaque.

01:07 So today, here at Junior Starters, we're joined by the school president, Ms. Danica Tan-Pay.
01:13 Could you briefly share with us some background of Junior Starters? How did it start?
01:18 So way back in 2019, I had this idea that I wanted to have an enrichment school that caters to everything the parents will need.
01:26 So there's art, cooking, taekwondo, physical activities like little gym, parkour, and then STEM classes, reading, and math.
01:35 And then post-pandemic, we relaunched Junior Starters as a preschool.
01:39 We have two options for the parents. We offer full-day classes, so that's for daycare.
01:45 And then if they don't want to have the whole-day program, they could have the half-day program for regular classes.
01:51 [Music]
01:55 What's unique with Junior Starters is we use eclectic approach.
01:59 When we say eclectic approach, we mix the progressive and traditional approach.
02:03 With this one, there's a perfect balance for the kids to have academics and then have extracurricular activities as well.
02:11 When I was a teacher before, I usually get the concern with the parents that when the kids came from a purely progressive preschool,
02:18 the kids have difficulty adjusting to a fully traditional set-up school.
02:24 So since here in the Philippines, most of the preschools are still in traditional approach,
02:28 we opted to have this kind of curriculum so that our students will be able to adjust easily to the traditional approach when they move to big school.
02:38 [Music]
02:40 For their English literacy subject, Junior Starters uses the JollyPhonics curriculum.
02:46 We use the JollyPhonics UK. This curriculum is widely used in the UK.
02:50 It's a widely used curriculum to help kids easily transition to reading, to help non-English-speaking kids to communicate in English easily.
03:00 To maintain a balanced and enriching experience for the children, Junior Starters seamlessly integrates a variety of activities into their class schedule.
03:09 These include STEM,
03:11 [Music]
03:14 Art,
03:15 [Music]
03:18 Cooking,
03:20 [Music]
03:23 Taekwondo,
03:25 [Music]
03:26 and Parkour.
03:27 [Music]
03:30 Students who come to the school also enjoy what they call "Fun Fridays."
03:35 Every Friday, we offer events, main events for the kids to be able to socialize with the other kids,
03:42 and then for them to have something to look forward in school, something fun that they can do every Friday.
03:48 [Music]
03:50 So the classes that we offer is that we have toddlers, that's for 1.6 to 2.6 years old.
03:55 We have the Junior Nursery for 2.6 to 3.6 years old.
04:00 The Senior Nursery for 3.6 to 4 years old.
04:05 And then the Pre-Kindergarten, that's for 4 years old to 5 years old.
04:08 So part of our curriculum is our Mandarin classes, and then we divided the math and the English into a different subject.
04:17 So since we're using an eclectic approach, we do traditional, but then the kids use workbooks,
04:23 and then we divided it into math, and then reading and writing their subject.
04:27 And then the kids also have their PE classes, and then we also have general knowledge subjects.
04:32 So this one, dito namin pinapasok anything that the kids need to learn with the community, about sciences, social sciences.
04:40 [Music]
04:42 Junior Starters is an inclusive school.
04:44 It partners with CareSpeaks Therapy Center to support children in their education.
04:50 So with this partnership, the therapist will go here in the school and then observe the kids,
04:56 and then they will give us points on what approach we can do to help this certain behavior,
05:01 and how we can help the kids really include themselves and socialize with the group set up.
05:06 [Music]
05:10 Teacher-Student Ratio is for the toddlers, we have a maximum of 10 students with 2 teachers and 1 teacher aide.
05:18 For the Junior Nursery to Pre-Kindergarten, maximum of 16 students with 2 teachers and 1 teacher aide.
05:24 [Music]
05:27 With our Parent-Teacher Communication, every Friday we release a notebook for announcements.
05:32 And then aside from that, what parents love about us is we usually update them with pictures.
05:37 So we have a Viber group, we update them with pictures twice a week.
05:40 Every Monday and Wednesday, we give out group photos.
05:43 And then every end of the week, we send out solo photos of the kids during the class.
05:48 [Music]
05:59 We offer 3 days free trial, and then during the 3 days free trial, we usually assess the kids on their levels of learning,
06:06 on what class do we need to put him or the kid.
06:10 [Music]
06:15 What I love about Junior Starters is their educational approach,
06:18 which combines the best of traditional and progressive teaching methods.
06:23 It's an excellent place for both parents and kids to explore and find the perfect learning environment for your little one.
06:30 The wide range of activities offered is a huge plus.
06:34 These activities not only peak children's interest, but also contribute to their well-rounded growth.
06:41 Did you have fun today?
06:43 Yes.
06:45 I played with all my toys, I played with all my stuff.
06:50 Did you cook?
06:52 Yes.
06:53 Was it fun?
06:54 Yes.
06:55 Can you give them a thumbs up?
06:58 Thumbs up.
06:59 And that's it for our day here at Junior Starters.
