00:00 One of the most visible differences between the Masters
00:02 and other big golf tournaments is the white boiler suits
00:05 and the green hats that are worn by the caddies.
00:08 This has been the case ever since
00:09 the first Masters tournament was played back in 1934.
00:13 But what exactly is behind it?
00:14 Well, until 1983, the players weren't actually allowed
00:18 to bring their own caddies to the Masters.
00:20 Instead, all of the competitors were allocated
00:23 one of the local caddies who were employed by the club.
00:26 These were poor African-American men
00:28 from the nearby community.
00:29 The members insisted the caddies were given
00:31 the white boiler suits to help them look smarter.
00:34 When the policy changed,
00:35 allowing players to bring their own caddies,
00:37 the rules about the boiler suits remained in place.
00:40 And these boiler suits are also still worn
00:42 throughout the year by the club's own caddies today.
00:45 Now, you will also notice that each caddy has a number.
00:48 The defending champion is automatically allocated number one,
00:52 and then after that, the numbers are in order
00:54 of when the caddy checked in to register for the event.
00:58 So there you have it.
00:59 That's the story of the white boiler suits
01:00 worn by the caddies at the Masters.
01:02 Thanks for watching.
