00:00 [BLANK_AUDIO]
00:03 What went wrong for it in the second half?
00:05 Seemed like zone offense was kind of stalling out.
00:07 They were switching defenses, I know, but
00:09 just your initial assessment of things to make?
00:12 >> Yeah, I think it's important when teams mix up defenses.
00:18 You gotta really get in your offense.
00:21 You can't be stunned every single play when they change it up,
00:24 cuz teams are gonna do that.
00:26 Especially coming into a bigger school at a mid-major.
00:30 Coach King Rice, I've played him for the past three years.
00:32 His teams always play hard.
00:35 That's something they stand by.
00:37 They got a new addition with his son who had a good game tonight.
00:42 And it's just one of those things where we have to do a better job
00:47 executing on offense.
00:49 Obviously, rebounding is major.
00:51 But yeah, the offense was slow.
00:57 When we start our offense at 20 seconds on the shot clock, and
01:00 what are we in, what are we in?
01:02 And then we look at the clock and there's eight seconds left.
01:06 I just think we as players need to do a better job of recognizing,
01:11 getting into stuff, and just kinda having confidence in yourself.
01:15 We work hard a lot.
01:16 Monmouth comes into our gym.
01:19 Every single kid is spooing with confidence.
01:22 It's oozing out of their skin.
01:24 And I don't know,
01:29 confidence is really, really big when it comes to basketball players.
01:33 And we say play with swag.
01:37 We need to play with high level confidence too.
01:39 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:46 >> Quinn, I know in the heat of the game, you're not worried about,
01:52 okay, does this guy have enough touches?
01:55 Does this guy have, but now looking at it as a whole,
01:59 was there a good enough effort getting Jesse the ball?
02:04 And the second half, cuz obviously he played pretty well in the first.
02:08 >> When teams kinda match up in a zone, when you look at our depth of our team,
02:13 we want Jesse to be a finisher.
02:15 You see sometimes I try to get in the middle, make a catch.
02:18 And it's really to be a distributor.
02:22 I get the catch to kinda be a point guard in the middle.
02:25 Teams are gonna do a great job of,
02:30 the scout is how can we stop Jesse Edwards?
02:33 And we have to understand that.
02:37 Some double early, some double late.
02:40 They kinda zoned up and kinda had five eyes on Jesse.
02:45 And we just need to do a better job of cutting off him,
02:47 cuz Jesse's an unbelievable passer.
02:49 But you're right, we gotta get Jesse the ball.
02:53 Jesse's the man on this team.
02:55 He's big ticket, so he's gotta touch the ball.
02:58 If we don't have an open layup or a wide open three that a play can't even drawn up
03:02 for it to be that open, it needs to touch Jesse Edwards' hands.
03:06 >> What you're talking about, you're kinda talking like a high low kinda thing, right?
03:11 >> Yeah, it's a high low, just catching the ball at the free throw line.
03:14 You have two point guards kinda behind me in the place, and
03:17 now I'm playing really a three on three.
03:19 I try to do my best at just trying to get in there.
03:24 Mix up some floaters, mix up some drop downs, try to get guys some open threes.
03:29 But yeah, zone offense, we're gonna need to just have some quick hitters.
03:35 Some schools, when a team hops in zone, they go bam, bam, bam,
03:39 three quick hitters and we can't play zone anymore.
03:43 And we can't be stunned by zone defense.
03:49 >> What do you guys need to do better at defense?
03:51 >> I hate to say this, but it was kind of like an experiment.
03:58 Bob, how defense was played at West Virginia, the Javon Carters,
04:03 these guys, I mean, it's easy to get a Javon Carter in here and
04:09 say pick up full court for 40 minutes.
04:12 But for regular human beings, it's pretty tough.
04:14 And we need to try to find a way to have a solid defense, but
04:20 be able to impact the other opposing offense in different ways.
04:23 Maybe that's picking up full court, but
04:25 when you have guys playing 35 plus minutes, I just can't have it deteriorate.
04:30 I'm not calling for any excuses or any things like that, but
04:34 it was just tough for, we gotta lock in.
04:38 We can't have guys come into our building and have career nights.
04:41 I mean, these guys are gonna be excited to play in the big Coliseum in front of fans.
04:45 I played at a mid-major for two years.
04:46 I couldn't wait for these games.
04:49 It's an opportunity to show yourself and we gotta shut that down.
04:56 Just pretty much not let them breathe from the jump.
04:58 >> Quinn, the other thing I kinda had written down was the hustle plays,
05:05 like 50-50 balls, their offensive rebounds,
05:10 often missed free throws, things like that.
05:12 Just how big were those kind of moments in this game?
05:14 >> Yeah, we didn't get one of them.
05:16 I've kinda looked at it as playing up to your ability,
05:21 and there's just some stuff, you miss shots in basketball.
05:27 But there's some stuff that's inexcusable.
05:28 We have to be the first ones to the court and on the floor.
05:32 And if we aren't, the media should kill us for it.
05:37 We deserve that.
05:38 There should be no, this is a high level.
05:42 Forget what the situation, we are here to play at a high level.
05:45 We did not show that tonight, but 50-50 balls.
05:48 I mean, West Virginia in a West Virginia jersey.
05:52 I mean, growing up as a kid, I'm like, West Virginia hasn't lost one 50-50 ball.
05:57 And we gotta have some of that toughness, gotta have some of that fight.
06:01 And playing with emotion, just playing as a team.
06:03 And understand this is just so much bigger than everyone individually.
06:08 >> Relative to what you saw when you're watching them on film and
06:13 knowing your guys' situation, do you see them do anything to capitalize on having
06:17 eight guys and only playing a few and probably being a little bit heavy-legged?
06:22 >> I mean, it's not a fatigue problem, I would say, or anything like that.
06:29 But we have to understand that kids, the average 11,
06:33 might come to play us here and try to score 50 points.
06:37 Just cuz, just like the mid-major teams playing in March Madness,
06:40 these are exciting, people get superpowers.
06:42 And hell of a game by them, those guys played hard, they hit big time shots.
06:49 I mean, Kobe Johnson's a great defender and there's a couple times where it's
06:54 just like, we'd love that shot from the other team.
06:57 And some of the stuff goes in, but going back to the 50/50 balls,
07:02 offensive rebounds, we have to bring the energy.
07:06 Especially on our court, we can't have another team come in and
07:11 have them set the tone.
07:12 >> And they rail a lot in the second half, which is maybe a time they try to press
07:15 some of that stuff too.
07:16 Coincidence or is that just kinda what they do?
07:18 You know them, right?
07:20 >> Yeah, I mean, it's just, that's a smart coach.
07:22 I mean, he had a great playing career himself.
07:24 He was gonna mix it up.
07:25 He was gonna press some.
07:27 Obviously, if I'm playing it, not to give any hints to any future coaches, but
07:31 if I'm playing a team with eight guys, I'm probably gonna press.
07:35 >> They also made you guys play 20, 30,
07:40 40 seconds of defense every time.
07:44 >> Right, so that's the deflating part of it.
07:48 That's my experience playing University of Virginia.
07:51 Some of these quick shots we have, it's tough to finally get a stop and
07:56 go down.
07:57 I think we have something, maybe miss a shot, and
08:00 then you gotta go play 30 seconds of defense again,
08:03 which is incredibly tough to do for anybody.
08:08 So just locking in on defense, we didn't play up to our ability, and
08:12 that's not making or missing shots.
08:14 That's having energy and having the swag and
08:17 just saying no one's coming into this costume and scoring on, you know what I mean?
08:25 But we're gonna get killed for this, and
08:29 there's probably some truth behind it.
08:33 But we are here to win games.
08:37 This little hiccup we have, we're gonna take it and learn from it.
08:41 I love every single one of my teammates, and
08:44 we're not gonna get bullied again.
08:48 [BLANK_AUDIO]
08:51 >> All right, thanks, man.
08:52 >> Thanks.
