00:00 If you are a person who's constantly checking your phone,
00:03 here's some really bad news.
00:07 It's increasing your anxiety.
00:10 We also know that what happens
00:13 is that often people check their phone
00:15 'cause it makes them feel busy
00:17 because we can't actually do two things at once.
00:21 What you can do is start one
00:23 and then quickly flick to the other one,
00:24 quickly flick, quick, flick back,
00:25 and then you go, get home,
00:27 and you just gotta calm yourself back down.
00:30 So if you've ever finished a day
00:32 and felt like your brain is like cotton wool,
00:36 all those times when you think to yourself,
00:38 now where was I up to again?
00:41 All those moments when you think to yourself,
00:44 I went to bed, I thought I got a great night's sleep,
00:47 and I've woken up and my head's just a little bit foggy.
00:51 You don't have the space to settle down
00:56 all those synapses, neuro systems
00:59 that are just on hyperdrive
01:00 as they're trying to process things.
01:03 So the problem with multitasking
01:05 is you're actually microtasking
01:06 and you're wearing yourself out.
01:08 While you're busy doing something,
01:10 you actually don't have the space
01:12 to be innovative and creative.
01:15 What we see is as often we say things like,
01:18 a goldfish only concentrates for nine seconds.
01:21 Here's the bad news.
01:22 The data suggests we're only doing eight.
01:26 Frightening.
01:28 Why is it frightening?
01:29 Because in eight seconds,
01:30 you can't do anything that's creative.
01:33 You can't have that innovative thinking.
01:36 So if the data's telling us it's only eight seconds,
01:41 even if you can concentrate for a minute or two,
01:44 you're going to be better off.
01:46 This is just a case of practice.
01:48 When you notice yourself being distracted,
01:51 bringing yourself back.
01:53 What happens if you actually just turn your phone off?
01:57 So here's the thing.
01:59 Try setting your timer for 20 minutes
02:02 and saying, "Whatever I'm doing,
02:03 "I'm not gonna stop for the next 20 minutes."
02:06 You'll be surprised how your brain starts to fire,
02:11 how your deep thinking comes out,
02:13 and you'll find solutions you never thought were possible.
02:16 You'll be surprised how much you get done.
