Benefits Of Winning The Masters Golf
Transcript
00:00 The Open Championship is the oldest of golf's four majors,
00:03 with the first playing of the event dating back to 1860.
00:06 Today, it's a huge sporting event,
00:08 and winning it brings with it a host of perks
00:11 that go well beyond being named
00:13 the Champion Golfer of the Year.
00:15 In this video, we're gonna take a look
00:16 at exactly what they are.
00:18 Let's start with the Sterling Silver Claret Jug,
00:21 one of the most recognisable trophies in sport.
00:24 The winner gets to keep the Claret Jug for 12 months,
00:26 returning it to the RNA at the start
00:28 of the Championship week the following year.
00:30 After that, he receives a full-size replica
00:32 of the Claret Jug to keep,
00:34 and can order up to three more smaller replicas.
00:37 The winner also receives the gold medal.
00:39 This was first awarded in 1872,
00:42 replacing the Challenge Belt,
00:43 which was previously awarded to the winner.
00:45 When young Tom Morris won his third consecutive Open
00:48 in 1870, he was given the belt to keep.
00:51 Right, let's talk money.
00:52 The Open is one of the most lucrative events
00:54 you can win in the game of golf.
00:56 This year's Champion Golfer will walk away
00:58 with a cheque for over $2 million.
01:00 That's quite an increase from the £10
01:02 that was dished out to Willie Park Senior back in 1863.
01:06 Arguably the most valuable prize of all
01:08 is the long list of exemptions that allows an Open winner
01:11 to compete in a host of lucrative events
01:14 around the world for many years.
01:16 These include five-year exemptions to play
01:18 on the PGA and DP World Tours,
01:20 entry to the next five Masters tournaments,
01:22 US PGAs, and US Opens,
01:25 and guaranteed entry to every Open Championship
01:27 until the age of 60,
01:29 or the ability to play in the next 10 Opens,
01:32 even if the player is over the age of 60.
01:35 So, as you can see, there is a lot to be gained
01:37 by winning the Open.
01:38 Thanks for watching.
01:39 We'll see you next time.
