PLUS: How going from actor to director changed his perspective for his new film 'Bayou Caviar'.

00:00 >> The music is what attracted
00:02 me to the musical at first.
00:04 But I had pretty much a good
00:06 time with the dancing, too.
00:07 That's fun.
00:08 And then maybe that number where
00:10 I interact with Amos, the
00:12 cellophane.
00:13 >> Okay, yeah, yeah.
00:14 >> That might be my favorite
00:15 number in the whole show.
00:16 >> What's your trick to kind of
00:17 keeping the energy up and
00:18 keeping yourself tuned in?
00:19 >> Sleep on your day off.
00:21 >> Okay.
00:22 >> Sleep during the day.
00:23 If you can get sleep during the
00:24 day, then you can be present for
00:26 your performance in the evening.
00:28 >> I played ice hockey 25 years.
00:30 I boxed all over the world.
00:32 Nothing is as hard as singing and
00:34 dancing eight times a week, six
00:35 days a week.
00:36 >> That's actually pretty crazy
00:37 to hear.
00:38 >> No, it's so true.
00:39 And I think it's because in any
00:41 organized sport, you're taught
00:42 to breathe.
00:43 I don't care whatever it is,
00:44 you're taught to breathe while
00:45 you're going through the
00:46 movement.
00:47 But when you're singing, your
00:49 vocals are -- that's where your
00:51 breath is being used, and your
00:53 body's being moved.
00:55 So it's a full-body workout.
00:58 >> Main thing I take away from
00:59 that, get a lot of sleep.
01:00 That's good for all of us.
01:01 That's not the only thing that
01:02 Cuba has going on, though.
01:03 He's also jumping behind the
01:04 camera for his directorial
01:05 debut, "Bayou Caviar."
01:06 Listen to this.
01:08 >> I think the whole thing of
01:10 acting and directing and having
01:12 to jump out of character to
01:14 focus on other people's
01:15 performances was a little
01:17 challenging at first.
01:18 But once you get into that
01:20 editing room as a director, you
01:22 get to pick your takes and your
01:24 and your co-star's taste.
01:26 That's intoxicating.
