Australia captain Pat Cummins on their incredible win over Afghanistan at the ICC Cricket World Cup and a brilliant 200 from the injured Glenn Maxwell who spent most of the innings batting on 1 leg
Transcript
00:00 Is that the greatest one-day innings you've seen by a Nausea?
00:12 Yeah, I think that's the greatest ODI innings I've ever seen.
00:15 It's probably the greatest ODI innings ever.
00:18 We're just chatting about it off all the players and it's one of those days where you just
00:24 go, I was there in the stadium the day Maxwell chased down that total by himself.
00:30 Yeah, I'm sure he'll be fine.
00:34 He's cramping but I think you saw out there how much he loves playing for Australia and
00:38 doing anything to play so I'm sure he'll be fine.
00:44 Hi Pat, awesome win.
00:46 While batting out there in the middle, could you actually sense the allegiance of the crowd
00:51 shifting towards you as the partnership moved towards the win?
00:56 Yeah, the crowd's normally on Max's side whenever he's playing over here.
01:02 You could hear it just getting louder and louder with each boundary.
01:06 I think as he started not moving his feet and still scoring boundaries you could hear
01:12 him start going crazy.
01:15 Yeah, awesome crowd today.
01:19 Pat, what was the conversation between the two of you when you came together in the 19th
01:24 over 91 for 7, still more than 180 needed.
01:27 And towards the end of the match as well when you refused to take singles, the question
01:33 was still run a ball but what was the conversation like?
01:37 Initially when I walked out there we thought the mystery spinners were the biggest trouble.
01:43 The ball was still spinning a little bit and they were bowling really well.
01:50 For me it was just basically hanging in there.
01:52 Maxie was still scoring quite freely but we knew it's the kind of wicket that gets easier.
01:57 Didn't really feel like run rate was ever going to be an issue with Maxie still at the
02:01 crease so for me it was just about basically survival and just hope we get a look at some
02:08 of the other bowlers that maybe that wicket doesn't suit as much.
02:12 It was a pretty simple plan, didn't look too far ahead.
02:15 I think Maxie might be a bit different.
02:17 I think he's always plotting his way to a win so I think even 200 runs out he was kind
02:22 of mapping out how he was going to do it.
02:24 I was just trying to survive.
02:27 And then towards the end he was obviously cramping so he tried to take one run and was
02:33 almost stretched off so after that I just said we'll both agree just stay down there.
02:38 Never felt like run rate was an issue when he's at the crease.
02:43 You've known for a long time that Glenn is a freak but you spoke about how we will speak
02:48 about the day we were there when Maxwell did what he did but you were at the other end.
02:53 Can you just take us through what you were experiencing?
02:55 There were times you just dropped your bat and you just stood there clapping.
02:58 Did you feel like you were in the audience as well?
03:00 Yeah, it's just a one man show.
03:05 It looks so easy.
03:06 I'm up at the other end and I don't see any gaps in the field.
03:10 I don't see where I'm going to score a boundary and it seems like every time he hits his bat
03:13 he just runs away for four.
03:17 It's just, yeah, I mean he still can't move and still manages to hit a six over third
03:22 man with a reverse lap.
03:25 Just he's a freak.
03:27 He hits into different areas.
03:31 Again it makes it look so easy and when you're up against something like that as a bully
03:35 you don't have many options.
03:41 So Pat, when Max went down it looked like you were going to have to bury him on the
03:47 spot and the physio came out and there was a fair bit of conversation going on.
03:52 Zamps was actually on the boundary waiting to come out.
03:54 Was there discussion then about him having to go off that he just couldn't move or was
03:58 it always going to be a stay on job?
04:01 Yeah, I thought he was going off so I kind of signalled to Zamps to get down here because
04:09 yeah he literally couldn't move.
04:11 Then I think Jonesy the physio was out there obviously and he kind of convinced Maxie
04:17 that if he came off it might be worse off so try and hang out there, stand up.
04:24 That's probably your best bet because once you go off it's that much cramp but there's
04:28 no guarantee you're going to get back out there.
04:33 At what point did you actually think you could win it?
04:36 Surely when you went out there it's net run rate improvement.
04:38 I know you said Maxie's a different beast but was there a point or a shot where you
04:42 thought you were actually a chance here?
04:47 When I went out there I thought if we can somehow scratch the 200 our net run rate should
04:51 be pretty good for the semis.
04:54 When Maxie got his 100 I kind of thought wow we're within 120 or something and then I still
05:01 thought no way.
05:02 I reckon it wasn't until the spinners were just about done and there was maybe 40 or
05:09 40 or something where I thought okay even if Maxie gets out here I reckon the other
05:13 guys can get it done.
05:16 Literally within the last 20 minutes was about the only time.
05:23 Just on that last 20 minutes or so was there any moment where you thought to yourself that
05:27 this guy's completely gone and maybe I might have started hitting a few shots or were you
05:30 always just confident that it's him and only him?
05:33 Couldn't get on strike.
05:39 Again I think once the spin bowlers were off I felt pretty confident in kind of any zamps
05:45 if he came in or whatever.
05:48 But Maxie just played it beautifully, got a few boundaries each over and then got him
05:53 self down the other end.
05:54 So I was ready to start having a bit of a go if I needed but run rate always felt under
06:01 control and Maxie was just doing it with such control.
06:07 Pat clearly Glenn's not well enough to be here.
06:10 Can you paint a bit of a picture as to what his physical condition is like after that?
06:15 He's happy.
06:19 Just cramp.
06:20 I think that's the main thing.
06:21 His back was cramping pretty early on, felt tight and then just hamstrings, calves.
06:27 For a one over he said his toe was gone.
06:30 So I'm sure he'll be fine.
06:32 Plenty of hydration.
06:33 He'll be in the ice bath I'm sure.
06:37 But I'm sure he'll be very satisfied and he'll be okay.
06:41 Pat, at 91-7 did you believe that you would win this game and going by how Maxwell played
06:49 in the later half without his foot movement and still got the ball sending to all parts
06:54 of the ground wherever he wanted.
06:55 So how would you describe that?
06:56 Show that kind of a batting.
07:03 Again you kind of put myself in the bowler's shoes and think what are your options here
07:06 and when someone's running hot like that and it's a good weekend especially for pace bowlers
07:11 you don't have much you can do really.
07:16 He just creates such angles even outside off he can get it over fine legs somehow.
07:21 He's as good hitting straight as anyone else in the world.
07:26 It's just incredible the amount of control and how cleanly he hits it for the amount
07:31 of different shots he has.
07:34 So you just sit there and admire it and it looks so easy and he hits a four and you're
07:39 like of course he'd hit a four but you try and do it yourself and you're no chance.
07:46 How would you describe today's crowd support for both the teams?
07:52 Crowd was great.
07:53 I thought it was a great match.
07:55 They were up and about for most of it and then obviously shifted towards Maxi who's
08:00 always a fan favourite over here.
08:05 Skipper you didn't start the World Cup in a good fashion like the last two matches.
08:10 Do you say there's much peace of mind now heading towards Pune knowing that you already
08:14 qualified for the semifinal with one match to go?
08:17 Yeah absolutely and probably more so just really happy with how we're playing, the
08:24 style we're playing.
08:25 I mean today was a bit of an outlier.
08:27 Maxi dragged us out of that one but like with the bat we've been aggressive, we've
08:32 taken the games on, we're really putting the pressure back onto the opposition.
08:37 So yeah everything's trending really well after a bit of a slow start.
08:41 I still don't think we've put a complete game together so the vibe in the group's
08:45 awesome.
08:46 We've found a way to win this one so yeah all things are looking pretty good for the
