00:03 Hello and welcome, everyone.
00:16 The Porsche Boxster Spider is the newest member
00:19 of the Spider family.
00:20 The combination of the most powerful engine and low weight
00:23 makes it the fastest and most dynamic Spider of all time.
00:27 This radical roadster is as agile as a go-kart
00:30 and keeps up easily, even with more powerful vehicles,
00:33 just like its forebears.
00:35 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:38 The legendary Porsche 550 Spider was a street legal race
00:46 car that participated successfully
00:48 in the Carrera Panamericana, the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio,
00:52 and the 24-hour Le Mans.
00:54 The 718 WRS Spider had an unusually long racing career,
00:59 which is why mechanics affectionately referred
01:01 to it as grandmother.
01:02 Well, she definitely has to be the fastest
01:07 grandmother of all time.
01:08 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:12 In a sense, the new Boxster Spider
01:18 takes the roadster concept back to its roots.
01:21 It's an open two-seater that perfectly combines performance,
01:24 purism, and design.
01:26 This Boxster Spider is also around 30 kilograms lighter
01:29 than the Boxster GTS.
01:31 This weight reduction was mainly achieved
01:33 through the newly developed convertible top with fins,
01:36 the sport bucket seats, and the use of fewer insulating
01:39 materials throughout the entire vehicle, all of which
01:42 also underscore the purist character of the Spider.
01:45 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:48 Anyone who drives the Spider immediately
01:51 notices that this sports car has nothing to fear in its class.
01:54 Of course, the Spider delivers tremendous power
01:59 in all engine speed ranges.
02:00 With its 3.8 liter, 375 horsepower,
02:04 naturally aspirated engine, and the 420 newton meters of torque,
02:08 the car accelerates from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour
02:12 in just 4.5 seconds.
02:13 It also has a very high torque output,
02:15 which is around 10% more direct than that of the other Boxster
02:19 models.
02:20 [ENGINE REVVING]
02:23 We always say that the driver, the vehicle, and the road
02:31 should form a unit.
02:33 Drivers of vehicles like this want to be in control.
02:36 In other words, they want to initiate all driving maneuvers.
02:39 They literally want to have both the driver and the vehicle
02:42 in their hands.
02:43 In the end, when you look at our lap times at the Nürburgring,
02:46 you'll see that at 7 minutes, 47 seconds,
02:49 the Spider is 9 seconds faster than the GTS.
02:52 [ENGINE REVVING]
02:55 The Boxster Spider is a lot more than fast.
02:58 It's the modern interpretation of a puristic roadster, one
03:01 that sends a clear message with its exterior design as well.
03:04 [ENGINE REVVING]
03:07 The Spider is a very fast car.
03:09 It's a very fast car, and it's got a very clear design as well.
03:12 [ENGINE REVVING]
03:16 Basically, our main goal with this vehicle
03:18 was to set it apart as much as possible from the Boxster GTS.
03:22 The front apron extends down extremely low in a manner
03:26 similar to what you see in our GT vehicles.
03:29 The very distinctive rear lid includes a prominent rear spoiler
03:33 that was also needed to ensure the car holds much more firmly
03:37 to the road.
03:37 [ENGINE REVVING]
03:40 Along with the differentiation, it
03:42 was also important to make the vehicle as light as possible.
03:45 We used different kinds of materials in the car--
03:47 die-cast aluminum and aluminum sheet panels.
03:50 The other involves the development
03:52 of a puristic vehicle concept that includes door handle
03:55 straps in the interior.
03:56 On the exterior, you'll notice the light top
03:59 that's operated manually.
04:00 This allowed us to reduce the weight of the vehicle
04:02 by another 10 kilos.
04:04 [ENGINE REVVING]
04:07 The most important customer requirements
04:10 were that the roof should be easy to put up and take down,
04:13 that it should be fit the vehicle's top speed,
04:15 and that washing the car at a normal car wash
04:17 should be no problem.
04:18 It was important to customers that the top shouldn't
04:21 restrict the vehicle's suitability for everyday use.
04:24 The technology we use with the roof
04:26 is exactly what was needed to meet this requirement,
04:28 no more, no less.
04:29 To preserve the purist character,
04:31 we didn't include certain comfort features,
04:34 such as roof liner or noise-insulating materials.
04:37 We also reduced the number of support bowels
04:39 and hard frame components to a minimum.
04:42 Finally, we utilized a fabric for the roof
04:44 that is thinner and therefore lighter
04:46 than the material used with a normal Boxster.
04:49 Taken together, all of these measures
04:51 have led to a significant weight reduction.
04:53 The roof is, of course, the highest point of the vehicle,
04:56 which means every kilo in weight savings
04:58 here has a very positive effect on driving dynamics.

05:17 - Pure driving fun.
05:24 That's the true strength of the Boxster Spyder.
05:27 It's a sports car you can experience with all your senses,
05:29 one that continually gives drivers
05:31 the feeling of having direct contact with the road.
05:34 - The Boxster Spyder is designed
05:39 to address sports car enthusiasts
05:41 who are looking for a breathtaking,
05:43 purist performance vehicle.
05:44 - I think it's time now for you to see for yourselves
05:50 just what the new Boxster Spyder has to offer.
05:53 Have fun and see you soon.
