00:25 Just going to go grab the rest of the stuff out of the car.
00:27 You kids finish unpacking.
00:29 [Footsteps]
00:31 Hey, stop it! You're going to make me spill all the marshmallows.
00:34 Marshmallows? Marshmallows means schmores.
00:37 Let's make some right now.
00:39 Yeah! You guys go get the twigs and stuff, and I'll find the matches so we can all be ready before Ash's dad gets back.
00:46 Here. I think we're supposed to make some sort of teepee thing out of this, right?
00:52 Uh, just throw them all down here.
00:54 Hey, have you found the matches yet?
00:57 No, but I have a lighter here, I think.
01:00 Ash, look at all my low-hanging branches and dry leaves.
01:04 I'll simply burn to a crisp.
01:07 You're right.
01:09 What? Have you found the matches or the lighter yet?
01:12 Um, no, but we shouldn't really be building a fire at all.
01:16 What? Why? What's the big deal? It would be so fun!
01:20 Hey, where's the fire, you guys?
01:23 Ash says we shouldn't build the fire anymore.
01:26 Why?
01:28 Well, we don't really know what we're doing.
01:31 My dad's not here to help us, plus we're in a bad place with all of these shrubs around.
01:35 We could start a wildfire and hurt all the animals in their homes.
01:39 Aw, I don't want to do that. Look at how cute they are!
01:43 Don't be such a sissy.
01:45 Come on, Ash, why are you ruining my day in the forest?
01:48 Yeah, why should we even listen to you?
01:51 Because, guys, I'm one of Smokey's junior forest rangers.
01:55 And we just need to be careful.
01:58 Smokey? Smokey?
02:00 Who in Sam Pete's pajama pants is Smokey?
02:04 Smokey Bear. He taught me everything I know about preventing wildfires.
02:08 Hi, kids. What seems to be the problem here, Ash?
02:12 Uh, are you Smokey Bear?
02:15 I sure am, Gabe. And it looks like you need to cool down.
02:21 Well, Ash is trying to ruin all of our fun by saying that we can't build a fire to make s'mores.
02:26 Well, Ash is right. Let me tell you a story.
02:30 I was raised in New Mexico with my friends.
02:33 One day, I smelled something I had never smelled before.
02:37 Eww!
02:39 Not that.
02:41 It was something I later found out was called smoke.
02:45 I followed the scent. There was a tent there, but no campers.
02:49 There were lots of trees and branches and brush.
02:53 And it was windy.
02:55 Suddenly, a big gust of wind came, and the fire started to grow.
02:59 It grew so big that it caught the trees and brush around it on fire.
03:04 I was nearly surrounded and had to run for my life.
03:08 The fire started to catch up with me, so I had to climb a tree to escape.
03:13 When I came to, a man was putting something on my paws.
03:17 They were all red and scarred, and they hurt.
03:20 I heard a man say that the entire forest had been burned in the fire.
03:26 What? What happened to your home?
03:30 Jade, it was destroyed because someone left their campfire unattended.
03:37 That's awful! What happened to your elk friend?
03:41 He and I didn't have homes anymore, so we had to leave.
03:46 Jade?
03:49 It's dusty out here.
03:54 It was that moment that changed my life.
03:57 I heard the man say that wildfires are usually started by humans,
04:02 and most of the time, they can be prevented.
04:05 I grew up and vowed to do all that I could to teach people everywhere how to prevent wildfires.
04:11 And Ash is one of my special helpers now, a junior forest ranger.
04:16 Smokey, how could we become junior forest rangers too?
04:20 Well, there are a few things you need to know first. Five simple rules to fire safety.
04:25 Well, hey there, Smokey. How's it going?
04:28 Just fine, Chuck. Just about to teach these kids my five rules of fire safety.
04:33 Dad, how do you know Smokey?
04:35 Oh, Smokey and I go way back.
04:38 In fact, I was just about to go over here and build a fire for these guys
04:42 when I remembered those fire safety rules.
04:44 Number one, only you can prevent wildfires.
04:48 Number two, always be careful with fire.
04:52 Number three, never play with matches or lighters.
04:56 Number four, always watch your campfire.
05:00 And number five, make sure your campfire is completely out before you leave.
05:07 Chuck, do you mind getting the fire started while I show the group a thing or two?
05:12 Okey-dokey, Smokey. You kids have fun.
05:16 So how do we obey the rule always be careful with fire?
05:19 Well, fire is useful and can be very good, but it is also dangerous.
05:24 How can there be good fires and bad fires?
05:27 Take a look over there at those campers.
05:30 They have a small contained campfire away from trees, branches and brush.
05:36 The fire is used for cooking food and isn't a danger as long as it's properly watched after.
05:42 Okey, well what about a bad fire?
05:45 Wait, where did Ash go?
05:47 Excuse me, sir. It's really much better if you contain your fire by putting rocks around it.
05:52 And that's a rule too, right?
05:54 Yeah, always watch your campfire.
