Pompey boss John Mousinho talks to The News after the Blues' FA Cup exit at the hands of non-league Chesterfield
Transcript
00:00 So Jon, pumping out the epic cup to Chesterfield, what do you make of that match-up?
00:05 I thought that first of all Chesterfield thoroughly deserved to win the game, they were the better side.
00:11 I thought the game overall, the first half was fairly even, I thought we'd probably have the better of it,
00:15 controlled the game up until half-time.
00:17 Second half, I thought we were really poor and Chesterfield ran all over us.
00:22 The final result is a real fair reflection of what we saw today.
00:26 Other than the result, what disappointed you most today?
00:29 Quite a few things actually, without being able to nail everything down,
00:34 I felt at times, I've just said it there, that Chesterfield ran all over us in the second half.
00:40 I turned around to Jon a couple of times on the bench, sometimes it feels like we're playing with ten men here.
00:46 It's the first time it's happened in a long, long time, so we've got to make sure we take it with a pinch of salt and don't overreact.
00:51 I was also disappointed with the quality that we displayed in the final third.
00:55 The lack of quality was probably the worst I've seen possibly since I've been here.
00:59 We kept crossing the ball behind, we couldn't get shots off.
01:01 When we did have opportunities, we didn't get it on target.
01:04 I can't think of any one time that we tested the goalkeeper at all.
01:08 So, plenty of things to take away and I think we need to do better at.
01:12 Decision-making as well, that second half, they seemed to make the wrong choice every single time.
01:16 Yes, one thing that if you want to sum up the game pretty well is when we have a corner in the last minute
01:22 and the goalkeepers come up and we don't deliver the ball in the box, that probably sums up the decision-making,
01:27 especially in the second half.
01:28 Like I said, it's easy to get carried away because of how poor you were in the second half.
01:33 The first half I thought we were absolutely fine without really having too much cutting edge.
01:37 Obviously conceded from a set-piece, but yes, the second half, just not good enough overall.
01:45 Obviously it's been a good season so far in the league and you looked a pale shadow of yourself today.
01:51 Yes, I think no need to overreact.
01:53 We obviously can't put those sort of performances in again and one of the big messages to the lads was
01:57 if you do that in six days' time against Charlton, then you're going to get punished as well.
02:02 Come back from the international break, if you do that against Blackpool, you're going to get punished
02:05 because Chesterfield are a good side, but these sides are probably slightly better.
02:10 So, you have to make sure you're on it and we just weren't on it today.
02:14 If you'd have given me a choice of all those games to lose, it would have been today.
02:18 That's no disrespect to the FA Cup because we came here with a full-strength side.
02:22 Obviously, we did respect the competition, but I think if we're going to lose a game,
02:26 this is the one to do and concentrate now on, first of all, the EFL Trophy Tuesday and then the league on Saturday.
02:30 What was it that Chesterfield did that you guys couldn't cope with?
02:34 Good question. We'll have to look back at the video.
02:37 I thought we coped with them pretty well in the first half.
02:39 They switched the ball out a couple of times, which was fine, but overall I thought we were fine.
02:43 There were no huge issues and we conceded the goal, which we think we can do better at.
02:49 It's difficult to summarise, but one of the things I saw after about a minute of the second half
02:56 was Michael Jacobs run past six players and waltz into our box.
02:59 That's just not good enough. We can't have that and it happened time and time again.
03:03 It felt at times like we were getting overrun.
03:06 Injuries as well. Not only in the first half, but with two injuries. What was the situation there?
03:11 I think Regan's okay. He came and sat on the bench and twisted his knee.
03:15 The only disappointing part of that was that instead of him offside, the linesman slipped and said he thought he was 90% offside.
03:22 For some reason they didn't give it. That was the frustrating one there.
03:25 Then Tino's done his hamstring, so that's probably slightly worse than Regan's.
03:29 Obviously, at this stage, you don't know how severe the hamstring is.
03:32 No, we don't know yet. We'll have a look at both injuries tomorrow and then go from there.
03:36 With Tino, you've handled him in kids' gloves the whole time he's been here.
03:40 You've looked after him and edged him into the game. Is that disappointing that he's gone down today with that?
03:45 Of course. It's one of those things. There's nothing you can do about that.
03:48 I think eight days post that Reading game and having done everything as we normally do during the week,
03:55 it's one of those things. Obviously, Tino's really disappointed in there.
03:58 We'll see how that goes. Hopefully, we have him getting back quickly.
04:02 Is it a bad one?
04:03 I don't know. I honestly don't know. It doesn't look great, no.
04:06 Regan, what happened? He twisted his knee when he fell to the floor.
04:10 I think he got a bit of a nudge and twisted his knee. It doesn't seem like it's too bad.
04:14 Again, we'll have to take stock of it over the next couple of days and see how it is.
04:17 He came out, he's walking, he's not on crutches or anything like that. Hopefully, he's fine.
04:21 How is Tino with that setback?
04:23 He's disappointed, obviously. I think he's being protected.
04:26 I think we've got him on the crutches just to make sure he doesn't put too much pressure through his hamstring.
04:30 But, yes, he's not happy.
04:32 He can't catch a break at the moment, can he?
04:34 You say that. He's been playing pretty well. He scored last week.
04:39 Things were coming along nicely.
04:41 So, yes, maybe overall it's just one of those things.
04:44 Injuries are part of the game and we've got to deal with them.
04:46 We're going to have to dust ourselves off and go again Tuesday.
04:49 We've got another game Saturday.
04:51 We've got a squad for a reason and it's going to be tested now.
04:54 Thank you.
